The American Original series of guitars is going to have vintage specs. It is a series that is generally priced twice as much as the American Professional series of guitars. However, not everyone likes the vintage specs on guitars. The 50's models have a U shaped neck, which are VERY thick. I find them slightly uncomfortable to play, and i'm not a small guy.

Grab you an exotic wood neck that you don't have to finish and that would definitely be a winner.

Now that i'm thinking about it... I could always buy a Warmoth neck with a better profile, throw a bigsby on the tele, and have an awesome guitar at a great price.

Wait a minute!!!

Bro...nobody here actually believes you're ever going to buy an electric. I've been waiting on that new guitar post from you since you surfaced on this thread.

I'm leaning hard in the direction of a Sire.

It's just a lot of features and great reviews for not much money.

Check out Darrell Braun's YouTube channel. He's reviewed several of their models and has good things to say about them. I haven't played one, so I can't comment.

One guitar in the same price range that I've played and liked is the Schecter Nick Johnston strat.

I don't think there is a Sire for me to try within 300 miles. I could always order one and return it if I didn't like it.

How much is too much fretboard roll? That's the only thing I've seen a complaint about. Danish Pete thought it might be too much on the Sire.

John Nathan Cordy compares the Sire and the Schecter. I've considered the Johnston. Not sure if the neck might be too thin?

I kinda want both. Man there are just so many good affordable options out there.

Disregard what I said earlier about the Original 50's tele. I didn't realize it was just an Original 50's body on a partscaster.

Don't know if y'all are familiar with Norman's Rare Guitars in L.A., but I've followed a little bit the last few days since Norman's daughter let people know he has been battling cancer. And diabetes. And now a couple of heart attacks.

That sucks. I do enjoy watching his videos to see all the great vintage instruments.

On a lighter note, just swapped out my Antiquity Texas Hot bridge in one of my strats with the Antiquity Surfer, like my neck and middle. Definitely prefer that tone to the texas Hot bridge.

I think I found my guitar today!

Ok. Kinda.

It's a $70 Squire Strat that is banged up. But I do want to buy a beater that I can use to learn how to do setup work on and fret filing, nut replacement, and so forth.

Pickup replacement. Swapping out the pots. Tuners. Whatever. Not thinking I can mod this thing into a beauty, but I would like to have something I can tweak that won't upset me if I screw it up. I'll have to go back and plug it in and see if it works.

My brother met a guy this weekend that plays in a cover band named Last Call who work out of the Boerne and Comfort area. He had a Harley Benton s-type guitar.

You fellas familiar with Harley Benton? It's evidently the house brand for Thomann, who is the German version of Anderson's or Sweetwater or something.

Some of the reviews are fantastic and some are "it's ok for the money".

This guitarist my brother met raved about his HB guitar. He's got PRS and Gibson and others and says this HB is his go-to now. And stays in tune great.

Even with shipping from overseas it would be inexpensive. I haven't seen one in person so I don't know how they feel.

I'm not much of a poster but have enjoyed this thread so figured it was time to try and contribute. I've played in a few local bar bands over the years and am a half decent rhythm player but stink at most other stuff.

I'm mainly an acoustic player but, given a real admiration for Jimmy Page, also enjoy the electric side on occasion. If I could only play like one person, I'd play like Jimmy Reed.

On the electric side, I've got two Fender Telesa '52 and a '55 (both reissues). They're my go-tos. I've got an SRV strat for that awesome Texas blues sound and keep it tuned to e flat. I've got a Gibson SG '61 reissue for the straight rock (think AC/DC) stuff but mine is hard to stay in tune as I know I need to swap out the whammy bar for a stop bar or tailpiece. I also enjoy (note the Page connection) a Dano '59 model. I use that one to test out a lot of the alternate tunings that I love and it's a great backup guitar for a gig. Also, I have a lot of fun with the Epiphone double neck and usually keep the different necks in different tunings just to challenge my playing (for example, the 12 string right now is in a open d tuning and the six string is in a drop d). It's heavy as all get out thoughI played it at two gigs and my back hurt all day the next day so it stays home.

Two amps, both Fenders, one a relatively newer Reverb Deluxe and one an old Twin ReverbI'll run a chorus or overdrive pedal through on occasion but for the most part keep it simple.

On the acoustic side, I've got a Gibson Hummingbird ('92) that I love to play and use that one for nice middle ranges in gigs but it's not my first option. I've got a Taylor 5 series (one of those bear claw tops that I bought in Dallas years ago…we live in a rural area with a few bears around so reminds me of home) for most of my gigs and a Taylor eight-string baritone my wife gave me as a present several years ago. I've also got a Gallagher Doc Watson ('03) model that I use a lot for different tunings (I like Tennessee and got that one in Nashville at Gruhn when they were on Broadway). That one usually stays in open e.

My wife gave me, as a wedding present more than 20 years ago, an old Gibson SJ-200 ('73) that stays in the roomI'll play it as a practice guitar but have never played it live. I got, about ten years ago, a '73 Gibson banjo for it to have some company. Lastly, I've got a Martin HD-28 for just playing in the living room to the wife and girls (it's in an open C tuning at the moment). That one stays close to home too.

There's a little dulcimer thing in there too as well as one of those quiet Yamaha nylon strings that I take with my if I'm on the road for work and have the time.

I know I'm fortunate to have a story with most of them. If I only had two, it'd be the '52 tele and the Martin. If only one, I'd take the Martin. My dream would be to write a half decent song one day and hear it on the local radio.

My cool music story is one day I was at the GC in North Dallas (I'm from North Carolina but my wife is from Dallas) and staring at an old ragged amp near the door…some guy came in and carried it up to the register and then out the door. I never looked up at the dude carrying it as I was standing there next to him crouched over looking at all the old knobs. Turns out the guy who carried it out was Billy Gibbons but I had no idea.

Thanks for reading…hopefully worth the time. Thanks for the great thread.

It's always crazy to see a dude get more range out of just a guitar than most get with a full rack and pedal board.

I mean... I always use the knobs on my guitar. The only effects I use are my reverb and analog delay. When playing through my Victory, I don't use any gain pedals at all. i always prefer natural distortion and tend to use my treble booster the most, out of my pedals.

However, for what he's talking about, you really do need a quality instrument and tube amp. Cheap guitars with low quality pickups and electronics will not give you the type of dynamics he's showing here. Neither does a cheap digital amp. The guy is playing a mother****ing Burst (on second view, it looks like a Goldtop with humbuckers. My point remains) through what I can only imagine is a 50's tweed amp.

Talent and ability is one thing. But cheap equipment does not clean up the same as quality equipment. Also, lower to medium output pickups provide much more dynamic control than high output pickups.

For example, my LP through my Victory while playing Ramble On. I play the verse on the neck pickup, with the volume rolled to about 5-6, and the tone down to around 7. My amp is on my favorite overdriven sound, but my guitar is clean and articulate. When I kick into the chorus, I just flip to the bridge and get immediate JCM800/Lester crunch. There is no way I get this same sound and dynamics out of many of these foreign made guitars and a cheap amp.

Nice!

You shouldn't be having too bad of a tuning problem with your SG. I was having very bad tuning issues on my 330 before I spent some time to properly setting it up and lubing the nut and bridge. Every time I replace my strings on all of my guitars, I actually apply a little carmex to any point a string makes contact with metal or the nut. There are other products you can buy, and some people say you can use graphite. I've never actually had much success with graphite but have had great success with carmex, funny enough.

Also, if you are having particular issues with a certain string, you may need to do a tiny bit of sanding for the string slot in the nut. Be sure you also don't put too many winds on those tuning pegs. I usually try to keep the winds under 2 wraps for the coiled strings, and 3 for the bare strings. Too many wraps can lead to tuning stability issues.

In other, completely unsurprising news, the pickups in the Epiphone LP are hammered s***, the push/pull pots make virtually no difference, and the tuners don't hold a tune. The good news is the frame is solid. It feels nice to play. So pickups, electronics, and tuners are gonna go. Almost certainly the bridge and tailpiece as well. Should be fun.

Oooooo... my favorite thing!

Please share what you are thinking about for the pickups and electronics! I love talking pickups!!!

On the electronics side, are you looking to keep the push/pull? Just coil tapping or also a reverse phase push/pull?

Are you going to buy into the voodoo and get some nice PIO caps? I did, and I doubt it makes a difference, but it sure made me happy to see them in my guitar! https://emersoncustom.com/collections/components/products/0-22uf-emerson-paper-in-oil-tone-capacitor-bumblebee

For those without the soldering skills, the Emerson premade kits are pretty cool and easy to install. Though you still have to solder the switch, jack, and pickups: https://emersoncustom.com/products/les-paul-prewired-kit

Generally CTS for the pots and Switchcraft for the switch and jack.

Are you going to replace the nut with a bone nut? Locking tuners or classic?

OMG, I'M SO EXCITED!

500T in the bridge is what I'm headed for. Haven't decided on bridge yet.

Probably locking tuners. Not sure if I'm sticking with Grovers or drilling holes and going Kluson. I bought the damned thing to work on my abilities to work on guitars so no pre-wired sets on this one.

Definitely agree on CTS and Switchcraft.

For me, push/pulls are cool in theory but there's little chance I use them practically so going to straight up pots.

Thanks again for reading. Here's a better look at the two teles...the one on the left is a custom shop '55 reissue and the one on the right is one of those vintage '52 reissues. I like them both, but my favorite is the '52 although I think that fuzzy neck position pickup isn't very versatile. I use the middle position almost all the time and the bridge position on occasion. I call the blonde one Honey.

DallasTele, thanks for your thoughts. This SG, as I understand it, has one of those floating bridges (I'll try to include a photo). I've taken off the whammy bar to try to flex the bridge less but every time I hit the bridge with my hand sure enough I have to tune something up. What little research I've done suggests Gibson didn't stick with this approach for long for that reason. While I'm slow to alter the vintage vibe, I think a stout stop bar might solve the problem but will also try your suggestions. On a positive note, when it's right it's right. I call it the Tesseract (of whatever that thing was from the Marvel movies).

Again, I'm not all that good and just enjoy guitars and their stories.

Nice AVRI Tele. From everything I've read, many players prefer the AVRI guitars to the newer American Original series. I believe the AVRI guitars have a true Nitro coat with no Poly undercoat, whereas the AO guitars have the poly undercoat.

Unfortunately, this is something I learned after purchasing my AO Strat. Fortunately, I found a Dave's Guitar shop limited edition thin skin '62 Strat, which is awesome.
