Random thought of the night...I really don't like the way my Epi LP sounds through my bassbreaker. I need to fix that. The Casino sounds absolutely amazing through it.
I missed this post!!!!

Just my kind of topic. Let's discuss. What don't you like? How do you set your bassbreaker? Have you done any hardware replacement on the LP?

If it were my Epiphone, I would do the following:

  • All new hardware. Set of new Grover locking tuners or classic Kluxon and Gibson OEM bridge/tailpiece. You may also want to look at whether you also need to replace the studs in the guitar. Sometimes they are cheap aluminum or something, which can definitely affect your guitar's tone.
  • I'm a snob for bone nuts, though my 330 does have a nylon nut because that's how they used to make them, and it's a Reissue. Other than that, I always do a nut replacement to bone. This is the one thing I would bring into my local guitar shop to do.
  • Electronics. Buy (4) CTS audio taper, 500K pots and either an orange drop cap or Emerson bumblebee cap. Emerson makes a great pre-wired kit, though it's pricey: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/LPBBLong--emerson-custom-prewired-kit-for-gibson-les-paul-guitars-long-shaft
  • New switchcraft toggle switch. Why? BECAUSE, MAN!

But most importantly, new pickups. I would definitely replace the pickups in that guitar, and it wouldn't even be a question. The only question is what sound you are looking for. Are you looking to play metal or more classic rock.

Once you choose the pickups, then make sure they are not too close to the strings. Too many people move pickups so close to the strings, and it just doesn't sound clear and articulate; it sounds muddy and boomy.

Man...thanks so much for responding. I'm going to have to wait until Sunday night or Monday to read and process and respond. I'm in Colorado this weekend for the game and am enjoying everything this fine state has to offer.

Great news for me, not so much for my cabin mates: the cabin we rented has a sweet Taylor. Score!

Well, then I will wait till then. In the mean time, my Tone King Imperial got here, and I have been playing it all day. Fantastic amplifier to get that Blackface and Tweed sound. With the built-in Iron Man II, I can play this thing in my condo at 11pm, and still get great tones without pissing off my neighbors.

Still playing with all the knobs to find the settings I like. Also messing with my pedals to get everything just right.

So, was just doing some browsing and came across these great looking Schecters. My first mid-range guitar was a Schecter and I have always found them to be some of the best bang for your buck guitars. These Aquaburst T style Schecters look awesome. I love the thin satin finish where you can still see the grain of the wood.

That's a really nice looking guitar. Love the look of a satin finish, but they always tend to get buffed to gloss over time in the high contact areas. That look I'm not as fond of. That stain really is gorgeous though.

Really? I've actually never owned a satin finished guitar so was not aware of that.

Yeah, at least on ones with a clear coat. You don't have that same problem on ones where they can just stain the wood and not clear coat.

Someone finally bought my S2 at the price I listed it!

If i can now sell my 85/15 pickup set and my Falcon grande, that will put around $3,600 in my pocket.

Hmm... what can I buy with that...

What was it listed at? The new ones just saw a pretty big price bump in the last week so it may have just turned into a bargain.

$1,600 + shipping

I've had it up for a couple several months now, and have not accepted any offer for $1,400 or $1,500.

15 years ago I bought my wife her first guitar, a Yamaha. She played the hell out of that thing and last week I upgraded her to a Martin X-series. She loves it!

Lol

How is the action on that one? The biggest differences I have found between lower quality and good quality acoustics is the action and intonation.

I ended up buying one of those mini guitars off Axe Heaven last week and they are really cool and well made for a trinket. Didn't get it for myself but rather as a condolence gift to a buddy along with accompanying song book I found on ebay.

Not to bring the room down but here's a nice Gibson 1963 SG made famous by Clapton and George. I want a real one of my own now.

Thoughts on pickup heights? I know "it depends" & is suited to taste.

I originally had the bridge humbucker very high to run hotter, but was getting noise & loss of sustain. Lowered it to 3/32th of an inch (internet seems to mention this a lot) -- top of magnet pole to string while holding down highest fret.

Now the tone is incredible & much cleaner/fatter! I did the same for the middle & neck pickups, but will likely adjust those so volume is consistent relative to the bridge.

I find myself tweaking every couple of months or so. I have a post not too far back where I spoke about how I backed the pickups off a little further, but then brought the screw poles out about 3mm. I love the tone I get from my pickups, with that setup. Very articulate and woody. However, I am a fan of low to medium output pickups. I do not like mid push of hot pickups, generally. Even with P90s, I prefer them vintage specced, with degaussed magnets.

I noticed effects & amp modeling work better with lower output so the audio doesn't get compressed or clipped. I found it interesting that Yngwie Malmsteen prefers low output pickups (Seymour Duncan YJM Fury pickups). For me it seems to also hide pick scraping sounds when shredding.

Forgot all about this for some reason...life has been crazy lately. Not ready to swap out all the pickups yet. Maybe in a year or two when I'm a lot better and more discerning. Mostly plays blues/classic rock/grunge with some metal sprinkled in. The casino sounds absolutely amazing through the bassbreaker. All the solid bodies sound a little dark and muddy on the medium and high structure channels even with the bright switch on. I've toggled with all the settings and still just getting that dark/muffled/muddy sound through the solid bodies.

Should have mentioned I don't really want to swap pickups in the LP because I have designs on replacing the Epi with a Gibson in the not too distant future.

Cheaper chinese pickups will definitely sound muddier. Almost like there's a light blanket laying over your speakers.

Also, Les Pauls are warmer sounding guitars, anyways. The maple cap itself can affect the tone to make it brighter or warmer. "Muddy" is in the pickups and eq settings. On the bass breaker, each gain setting also adjusts the EQ by cutting the bass and adding a bit of upper high/mid boost. The highest gain setting on the Bassbreaker takes that to the highest the amp will go.

You need to get yourself a treble booster or roll that bass all the way off. The guys in the 70's would always roll the bass off and would run a treble booster. I have posted this video before, but it's definitely an important one when talking about Les Pauls:

treble booster as mentioned or you could try one of those amps in a pedal, although I'd be skeptical. Better yet, buy yourself a plexi reissue.

Those amps are hella loud. No master volume, so you have to crank it to get your distortion. I wouldn't buy that without also purchasing an attenuator.

Personally, I have played both the SV20H and the Bassbreaker... the Bassbreaker is better, imo.

Just wanted to say I appreciate Dallas Ags input on this thread.
I got myself a new pedal setup and loving the sounds I can get.
I'm sure there are other lurkers getting great info here.
