I've heard good things about the Yamaha THR10 II.

Don't bother with the positive grid spark. I played with one, and it has too much bottom end.

They can find good tube amps for the same price they spent on the guitar. They should be able to find a good used reissue 65 deluxe reverb. Its one of the best tube amps imo.
It is, but for a beginner who wants to play classic rock? he would blow the doors off the hinges and won't get the same classic overdrive as those players he was mentioning in his post.

So, to throw in with the Warmoth talk, I really want to do a Warmoth build with the following:

  • Thinline tele body
  • Swamp Ash
  • Candy Green
  • White binding
  • Bigsby
  • Filtertron pickups in bridge and neck
  • Maple neck
  • Rosewood fretboard

The body alone, before buying pickups and a bigsby, will be around $876. Haven't priced the neck up yet. That will be my next gift to myself when I have a big close.

Nice. I know you've been looking for a green bound tele.

Couple of questions on the neck:

Roasted or not? Seems like roasted is becoming more and more popular these days, dunno if I have a preference either way.

Radius? Again, this is one of those that I don't know makes a huge difference to me personally.

Fret gauge and material? I don't prefer stainless steel frets. Feel like it adds some "zing" to the sound, and I don't wear down frets enough to justify it.

Edit: oh yeah, one more thing. Binding for the neck too?

I haven't decided on a roasted maple neck, or not. To be honest, I don't think it would make too noticeable a difference, aside form the look. I think a roasted maple fretboard makes more of a difference, as opposed to a regular maple fretboard.

For radius, I like a 9.5". Looking at a nut width of 1.650". Neck thickness from about .79" at the nut to .90" at the 12th fret. Those are the measurements of my Custom Shop tele, which I find to be an extremely comfortable neck to play on.

As for frets, I like 6105. I have never played on stainless steel frets. I'm a purist with many things, which will probably mean I go with the standard. I just like vintage tall/narrow frets.

No binding for the neck. I think it looks strange on a tele.

Cool, that's all reasonable.

Thanks for the follow up, good luck with the build.

One thing to look at on necks with them depending on price range, they have some spectacularly figured maple necks. Flame and Birdseye. Their wood selection for the price is hard to beat.

My next will either be an LP styled Kiesel, or one of these insane 5150 customs from Meanstreet Guitars. The owner, Mitchell, is a very nice guy. Not sure what color I'd do but it would be similar (translucent with an aged look, matching pipes in the cutouts in the head/5150 logo).

I've been using Pro Tools for > 10 years, so it's what I'm most familiar with. I'm intrigued by Luna as I've been eyeing switching interfaces over to UAD though. Currently I have an old Digi 003 console that I'm trying to justify getting rid of, though I do like being able to record automation with a physical fader.

Plugin wise I've gravitated towards the Slate Digital suite over the past couple of years. I still use some older Waves plugins though, and Soundtoys, love their stuff for color and interesting sounds/effects. I also recently purchased the Slate VSX headphone set, which is super cool IMO.

I'm still not stellar at mixing, though I'm improving lately as I'm doing it more.

This is exactly what I want to build, except I want Candy Green and a satin finish. I mean... I could just focus on closing something big, and then go by and custom order one at Fuller's...

I want mine to be a semi-hollow, as well.

That's freaking gorgeous! I've always been really impressed with the depth in PRS finishes. I wish they had some remote IT positions. Apparently at your two year anniversary you get to build your own guitar with certain specs and then they go up at intervals from then on out.

It's a nice guitar.

However, if you were to tell me I could have any guitar custom built for me, it would be a tele from the Fender custom shop. There is just something about a Tele, for me. Been messing with the new PRS for the last couple days. Before calling it a day, I picked my my tele on a whim... couldn't put it down for an hour.

Finish Type: Satin
Binding: White Binding
Control Cavity: Tele Top Rout with Chrome hardware
Pickup Rout: Need to know what to do for Lollartrons
Pickguard: F-Hole Tele, White Solid Gloss.

Neck - $594
Shaft Wood: 3A Flame Maple
Fretboard Wood: Indian Rosewood (Dark)
Nut Width: 1.650"
Profile: Standard Thin
Fretboard Radius: Straight 9.5"
Frets: 22
Fret Size: 6105
Inlay: Mother of Pearl Dots
Side Dots: White
Nut: GraphTech White TUSQ XL Standard
Finish: Vint Tint Satin Nitro

Lollartron Traditional Pickups - $370
Bigsby B5 - $157
Mastery M1 Bridge - $180
Pots/Caps/Switch - $75

Total Build Cost - $2,216

Nice. White f hole is a little unusual (heh). I think most I've seen are either unfinished or black.

I went ahead and ordered my own Warmoth strat parts. Ordered the body unfinished. Gonna try and find somewhere that can do a nitro finish for me, since Warmoth doesn't have that option (even though the neck is nitro...)
Lathspell

No, the f-hole is normal. The pickguard is made to accommodate for an f-hole.

I too would prefer a nitro finish. Let me know what you find. Would love a very thin nitro candy green finish.

i was perusing some relic strats this morning and got to wondering if anyone here has ever made a pawn shop or old guitar store find on an awesome older guitar. does that still happen with everyone trying to sell on the internet? the prices on anything relic are pretty far out there.

I haven't, but I have found a great deal a used Larrivee (at Guitar Center of all places) as well as a Washburn N4 on Craigslist.

Difference of course is those aren't technically collectors items. The N4 commands a good price on Reverb but that is because the only people buying them know exactly what they're looking to buy.

A friend found a 60's Gibson ES-335 (I believe that was the model) that someone was unloading for a few hundred $'s. He found it via FB marketplace. The seller had bought it from a co-worker for $100, both of whom knew nothing about guitars. My buddy reached out to the guy to determine if he knew what he had - found the guy to be honest - and convinced him to get it appraised. He was going to broker a deal with a collector/luthier that specialized in restoring them but the seller ended up unloading it for $2k to another random person. He could have sold it for $15K plus according to the luthier that viewed the photos.

Back in '96 I bought a great Gibson Les Paul standard - think it was an early 80s version - out of the classifieds. When I went to go pick it up, guy was also selling another GLP - but with factory installed tremelo. Ended up picking that up also because it was $300.

Took it around the corner to Guitar shop just to check. Guy said it was really rare and offered $1000 on the spot. Probably should have taken it - but kept it anyway. Heaviest guitar I ever had and I loved the sound - gave me neck problems in the end so I sold it for about $700.

Year later had a break-in at my house and the other was stolen. Bummer

I love this thread.

Here is my my 1954 Martin D-28. Not really a 'New' guitar. This was gifted to me from my wife's grandmother.
Her late husband bought it brand new. It sat in her closet for the last 30 years

The bridge was lifting off the body when I got it, so I took it to Pace Guitar in Houston to repair it a few years ago.
It still needs a neck reset, but its more of a collector piece than a player. I keep a humidifier in it during the winter to keep the wood from drying out.

Just out of curiosity I took a look at asking prices for 1950's D-28s on Reverb. Prices started around $8K and went up to around $16K for a fair number. There was one listed at $19K.

It would be hard to find something like that, these days, unless you happened across one in an estate sale. Some widow looking to get rid of her late husband's guitar that was just sitting in the closet for 50 years.

You bring up an interesting subject on relic'ed guitars. Quite the controversial topic among guitar players. I can't remember if I told the story on here about my heavy relic CS Tele, but I will again.

A lot of the "a Squire Vintage Vibe is just as good as any other guitar" types like to crap on Custom Shop and relic'ed guitars. I was at my local shop just window shopping guitars and chatting with the guys up there who give great recs. I told one that I had a strat and a LP, and he told me that I needed to have a Tele, since I live in Texas. I have never appreciated the tone of the modern Tele's I had played, so was very apprehensive, but decided to humor him and play some.

I started with the American Professional, which was what I was expecting. Didn't appreciate the tone, though it felt good to play (Just like all Fender Professional guitars I have tried). Next, he handed me the Jimmy Page signature "mirror" tele. I hated the way it felt in my hands and couldn't believe it was listed as over $2K. He finally pulled down this beat-up looking guitar for me to play. Before this day, I had seen relic'ed guitars, but didn't know anything about them, so had absolutely no opinion on the matter. I also had no idea it was a Custom Shop guitar. From the moment I hit the first chord, I was amazed by the tone and feel of the guitar. It wasn't until after playing it for 15 minutes or so that the guy told me about the custom shop and relicing process.

For these reasons, I know it was not placebo or expectations that made this guitar the best sounding and playing guitar I had ever played. The guitar haunted me for a month before I went back up there and we agreed to 10% below the asking price.

On another note, anyone have any experience with Mario Martin custom guitars? I came across the name in one of Rhett Shull's videos on YouTube, and he had great things to say about the one he played. I went to their site and you are able to request a quote from them for a custom guitar. I sent them the specs I mentioned above for the customer T-style I really want, and they came back with $3,293 for the guitar.

It looks like I would need to source the pickups, myself, but I am confirming that.
