Haven't had much time with it, but early results are "worth the 15 month wait".

Mentioned in an earlier post, I ordered a custom Atlas Cab in February of last year. He's a 1 man shop and it finally arrived today.

Merlot stain (double stained to make sure it was deep), gold matrix grill, Celestion 12" V30 speaker.

The image makes the grill look silverish, but it is the black/gold weave like you would see on a PositiveGrid spark amp.

Right now just this tube-driven pre-amp pedal. It has a 1 watt output which is fine for playing at home.

I'll get a power-amp pedal to add jam session/gig-level volume. Over time I'll likely start running through lunch-box heads but I'm in no rush now because I like the 70's - 90's rock sounds I can get w/this setup.

I'll make a plug for these guys.

The speaker shipped with a speaker cable from Rattlesnake Cables.

Only 3ft since the assumption is you'll have a head unit on top or nearby. Since I'm using tube pre-amp pedal to drive for now, I ordered a longer cable from the RC.

As a first time customer, the owner of RC filmed a short video and emailed it, thanking me for my purchase. It was not pre-canned, it was my name and he noted the red cable I ordered was in the queue to be built.

That all customer service was that friendly these days....

I've been tempted by their 20% off ads on FB. No idea if they'll sound better than standard Ernie Ball cable.

I don't recall whether you ended up getting a guitar, but Alamo Music has a Sire S3 if you are close by and want to try it out.

Saw this on FB from a young lady that fancies herself as a metal chick.

Speaking of modifications, I want to replace the white pick guard on my olive casino with a black one (my feeble attempt at, and recognition of never owning, a Chris Cornell 335). Also thinking of adding black knobs. Finding the right pick guard isn't as straight forward as one would think. Anybody have recommendations on a company you've used?
Garrelli 5000

No experience but would the 2008 pick guard here suffice? His first 335 was a 2009, and I think his customs/signature tribute were based on his first.

Foreign made guitars sometimes have weird measurements that aren't quite the same as their USA counterparts. Your best bet is to see if Epiphone offers one in black.

I don't *think* it will fit but can do some measurements when I get home.

Thanks!

Good luck!

I'm stupid and wasn't thinking about your guitar - I was focused on replacing a pickguard on the actual Cornell model.

I know this is first a guitar thread, but has anyone here messed with NAM? Neural Amp Modeler
It's free/open source and is amazing what it can do now modeling different Amps.
I am very impressed. It rivals the high end Kemper and Fractal stuff as far as tone and feel, but it's FREE.
You can even model/train it on your own Amp so you can have your own VST

This is the nut on my $70 project guitar. It's been on the back burner for awhile.

I've got some fret buzz. The saddles on the bridge have been raised more than I think they should be but I still fret out on some bends.

Checking the fret leveling has not yet been done. I need to find the right tool for that. In the meantime, im considering a new nut. Besides being plastic, are some of the strings too deep into the nut? Seems like the slots are too deep.
Lathspell

If you're fretting out, then it has nothing to do with the nut. It is either your neck relief or fret level.

Where on the fretboard are you experiencing fretting on bends? Is it everywhere on the board, under or above the 9th-10th fret?

It's possible your nut could be cut poorly, but the only way to verify is to get string height gauges to check, but that would cause issues with open string fret buzz, not bending issues.

ETA: Also, your string wrapping is giving me anxiety.
maroon barchetta

Above 9th fret for sure.

Initially had it even on open strings. Adjusted the neck relief when I installed the new tremolo and had everything out to work on it. That helped but I had to raise saddles a lot.

Say the nut isn't a contributing factor, does it look like the slots are too deep?

I tried following a string wrap recommendation I saw from a YouTuber. It was a pain and I won't do it that way again.

Eventually I want to replace tuners but I'll need to widen the holes to get anything decent and locking in there.
Lathspell

When getting fret buzz higher up on the neck, that is usually a symptom of too much neck relief. Saddles should only be adjusted based on your preferred string height when not fretting a string. Tighten your truss rod to straighten the neck a little bit. Go in quarter turns of the truss rod and then check.

Step 1: quarter turn, clockwise to tighten truss rod.
Step 2: Set string height based on comfort and feel, not string buzz.
Step 3: Play across the neck and bend in various places. Is there still too much buzzing on the higher frets? Repeat Steps 1-3.

Do this until everything feels smooth and your fret buzz is minimized. At the end of the day, you get what you pay for. Unless you spend a lot of money on a guitar that was given very close attention to detail, there can always be issues.

If you are experiencing fretting out on the lower frets, then you need more neck relief, so you would go counter clockwise.

Do you know how to see your neck relief? Put a capo on the first fret and hold down the fret where the guitar meets the body, or around the 14th fret or so. You should see the slightest gap in between the string and your fret board. It's possible for the fret board to be warped, causing there to be more of a gap under the 1st or 6th strings. If that is the case, then your neck is warped, and would just need to be replaced.

None of this has anything to do with the nut. Could the nut be cut too deep? I don't know, it's possible, but that would not give you these issues. You would need to take your guitar up to a luthier and have them check it for you. I have string gauges that I've used to check my nut depths.

Oh, and I'm not a fan of locking tuners, myself. I much prefer the Fender vintage tuners for a Strat or Tele. But again, I'm a purist.

It's a cheap guitar with cheap tuners. I've looked at standard replacement tuners but the peghole is 5mm and the decent replacements are larger than that. If I end up having to ream the holes, which I am open to trying, I'll go with either a vintage Fender tuner or something locking.

It was a $70 guitar that I bought with a gift card I had. If it's ugly or I screw it up it's ok. It's a learning tool. It will be great if I can get it to play well but if I mess it up I'm not out any real cash on the guitar.

As for the neck relief, I tried it before but obviously need to give it more attempts and put in more time on it. Thanks for the tips again. It will be good for me to practice these steps. Getting uninterrupted time will be the key! Maybe with a long weekend coming up I can do it.

Ah... if it's that cheap of a guitar, it could definitely probably use a fret level job.
maroon barchetta
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It's a Squier

It had been dropped

It was in the used section at GC and was only $70 and my brother had given me a $100 gift card for my birthday or Christmas or something. I decided to buy my first electric guitar as something to learn how to do guitar tech stuff on and not be upset if I screw it up.

I need some decent straight edge tools to check frets with, and then maybe something to level them with if that becomes necessary

Haven't heard of this particular modeler but did read an article about what's available from Sweetwater. I see Neural is mentioned there.

Sounds like a fun project!

I go by the maxim:

Sell your work and buy a hobby.

If working on your $70 rig is a hobby that makes you feel good and you learn a skill or two, that is awesome. The moment it starts to feel like work, then sell it, donate it or Jimi Hendrix it on stage with a can of lighter fluid...
