What wall hangers do you guys use? (assuming String Swing or Hercules?) I'm looking to get my acoustic off the floor and I have the perfect wall spot in my office. I likely won't be able to hit a stud, though, so will have to rely on some drywall anchors.

I've always used String Swing. I prefer the ones that are wood.

Bought it at Fullers in Houston. You ask for the story, you get it.

I went up there one day just to look around, as I do. The guys there are great to chat with, and I was talking with John. He asked what I currently had, and I told him a LP, Strat, and a couple others. His immediate response was that we are in Texas, so obviously I need a Tele.

I had never really appreciated Teles, up to that point. I thought they sounded too bright and brittle. At least, that was what I gathered from the American Standards I had played.

Just to humor him, I sat down as he handed me a few to play. The first was an American Standard, which reinforced my original opinions on Teles; didn't care for it. The second was the Jimmy Page sig tele. It was around $2,300 and just didn't feel very good. Honestly, it felt like a cheap guitar in my hands. I was very surprised a Fender felt so bad while playing it.

After handing him back the JP tele, he said, "You have to try this one." He reached up and pulled down a horribly relic'ed Blue Sparkle Tele. At the time, I didn't know anything about the Fender Custom Shop, nor about relic'ed guitars. I plugged it in and it blew. Me. Away. It was one of the best sounding and playing guitars I had ever played. He then told me they had bought 5 of a special run the Custom Shop had done, all the exact same except for the finish. Each was a different Sparkle color (Green, Gold, Blue, etc). The only two left were the Blue and Gold Sparkle. Apparently, many of the guys all thought they were some of the best Teles any of them had ever played.

Unfortunately, it was $3,600 and I was just about to buy my first house. Definitely couldn't justify the spend. So I left and went about my day. That guitar haunted me for the next month. I started thinking I had to have made up how great it was. Just over a month later, I was at the Central Houston Guitar Center and saw they had a Custom Shop tele in the vintage burst finish, which I liked much better than the Sparkle finishes (which I don't really like). I played it and thought it sounded okay, but did not like how it felt in my hand. That got me thinking about the one I played a Fullers, so I left GC and went by Fullers to play the guitar and see if I was just lying to myself.

When I got there, they had already sold the Blue Sparkle since I had last been there, and the last one of that amazing run was the Gold. I pulled it down, plugged it in, and there it was again. That magic I had felt the last time I was in there. I knew I had to walk out with that guitar or I would regret it for a long time. I went up to Eric and said I would buy that guitar if he knocked 10% off. We agreed on $3,250 and I bought the best guitar I had ever played.

The great thing is that I knew nothing about the Custom Shop when I initially played it, so i know it was not placebo or expectations of something great. Honestly, when he first pulled down that super heavy relic'ed blue sparkle, I was extremely doubtful. To this day, I wish this guitar was candy green instead of gold sparkle; I think it's ugly as hell. But damn, playing it just makes me smile like an idiot.

I assumed it was a custom shop. that's a great guitar. good looking too IMO. I am a sucker for the bass boat sparkle I like to call it.

also Fullers is one of the few good stores left in houston IMO. Bought my main bass there a couple years ago...

Great story, for sure!

For me, though, I am not excited to see the relic'd version of anything--cars, guitars, clothes, etc. I would prefer to put my own scratches and dents and wear on the item through my own sweat and blood.

I keep most things close to pristine which emphasizes that I am the relic.

Now, Willie's Trigger on the other hand might be a special case...

Excellent!

I love the finish on that Strat with the wood grain showing through.

Apparently this dude has been doing it since the 70s and has played with Clapton, Eric Johnson, Mark Knopfler, you name it. And I'd never heard of him until a few months ago when one of his songs came across my Spotify. Wish I'd known about him years ago. Incredible tone. He does some pretty cool stuff with a resonator as well.

I own this as posted on one of the earlier pages in the thread along with the Page custom guitar hanger I had made. It only cost me around $1,700 new on Sweetwater.

Surprised you didn't like it. You're obviously much more the player than I am but my buddy that I've referenced a few times on this thread and a page or two back loved borrowing it and playing live shows with it for a full year before he finally gave it back. I just bought it for the nostalgia vibe really.

Great story nonetheless.

Everyone is looking for something different. There are also a few different JP Teles. The one I played was the mirror tele, not the dragon tele.

Ahh I didn't notice the difference. Yeah, I have the Dragon. And I noticed it has a very small blemish on the wood in the side once it was returned to me. Didn't want to bust my buddy's balls over it and swore I wouldn't but ended buzzed up walking out of Ohana Festival and telling him. He felt so bad and was shocked. Then I felt so bad for bringing it up like I told myself I wouldn't.

Which brings me to this point: is there a material that can repair something like this? It's nothing major and doesn't affect the guitar at all. Hell, it may give it more character now that I think about it. Curious though.

I believe those use a polyurethane finishes on the JP dragon teles, so it may end up coming off in big pieces down the road. Polyurethane does not wear in the same way as nitro because it creates more of a plastic over coat as opposed to how nitro slowly works its way into the wood.

With poly finishes, I don't think you will be able to remove the top coat without removing the paint job. Here's an example. See how the poly top coat literally turns into a plastic coating:

EDIT: Just to add, both nitro and poly are both technically plastics, but work differently.

Also wanted to come back and say, **** happens to guitars that are actually used. Gives them character, which I like. I'm not one who needs their guitars to be pristine, though I do understand there is a difference between wear on the guitar from your use versus someone else's.

I love that my Les Paul and 335 are from '02 and '01, with over 20 years of use. Granted, neither has any major dings. My Les Paul definitely has a little wear where your right forearm rubs along the binding when you play. There is also a crack in the binding inside the cutaway, but it's not lifting. If you look at it closely with light/reflections, you can see little indentions in various places along the body. I also don't buff my guitars to make them shine pristinely, because I like the look of a less glossy body. I especially love all the tarnished nickel and can't wait until the nitro lacquer really starts to gain that yellowish tint.

My blue Strat has a spot on the bottom where it absorbed some of the dye from a black guitar stand at one point. No one would probably see it unless I told them to look for it, but it's there. The seller was very candid about that, and it allowed me to knock some money off of it.

On my olympic white strat, I've rubbed off the glossy back a bit to make it feel like a satin finish, and have used a razor blade to round the fretboard edges a bit more than it came from the factory. Love making guitars my own!

Hey fellas,

Care to give a mom in Houston some advice on what to buy and where? And maybe some advice on lessons?

FYI if any of you are in the market for a Taylor acoustic, their "Get One Gift One" deal is pretty damned strong. You buy any full size acoustic (including Academy models) and you can get one of 3 guitar deals:

-Baby Taylor for $99
-GS Mini Mahogany for $199
-GS Mini-e Koa for $299

Pretty awesome, I got an Academy nylon string, and then got the GS Mini-e Koa for $299, excellent deal! Will post when the GS Mini comes in.
I took advantage of this a few weeks ago. I've had my eyes on the new all-maple Taylor AD27e flametop for a while and couldn't pass up the deal. Sweetwater had one with the most beautiful piece of maple I've ever seen! $299 for the Koa GS Mini with a pickup is an absolute steal!

If it is in "as new" condition as the seller says I'd say it's a very good deal.

I believe the Tremonti SE w/ tremolo had the Wide/Thin neck profile. That would be the only thing I wouldn't like about it. YMMV.

Plays and sounds great. The neck carve is relatively thin so if you like a chunkier neck it may not be your thing.

The big differences here are gonna be pickups, electronics, hardware, and a shallower top carve. I know some people will change all that out to the US versions of everything, but by the time you do that you're going from a $500 guitar to a $1000 guitar.

Saw this today when I went to GC to finally put my hands on a Silver Sky SE. It reminded me of Wayne's World for a second there.

I did not ask the GC employees to take it out of the display case so I could play Stairway.

Really beautiful guitar.
