Just finished S1. Holy cow, this show is a million times better than it has any right to be. Kudos to whoever saw a 5 minute commercial from 7 years ago and said "we can make a 10 episode show about this character if we combine it with wonderful storytelling and a good dose of jokes and heart". Bill Lawrence does a great job of making you laugh and then hit you with emotion seconds later, and then gets you back to a smile.

I'm impressed with the overall direction. At first, a couple of the plot points seemed like they were going to be recycled ideas--the female team owner wanting to tank (Major League), the athlete's girlfriend causing problems (Bull Durham). But they didn't go for the easy plot tropes and created some depth in these characters.

Looking forward to season 2 and 3.

Best show on TV. I would never think a silly comedy based on a funny YouTube clip could be the most heartfelt uplifting show available but it is.

Grant Wahl had Sudekis and Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard) on his podcast this past week. Really fun listen.

I just watched it - yeah, I know - and it is just as great as y'all have said. In my defense, I'm not the only one late to the party: https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-importance-of-being-ted-lasso-11610723375

Fun show. Loved the fish out of water stuff for a redneck (simpleton) football coach in the UK.

Really what got me though was both the touching personal stuff that paid off down the road between him and players and also the coaching techniques that frustrated them but later they realized the impact he had.

Examples like the books he had them read, refusing to get involved in the locker room harassment of the one assistant guy and how the team then handled it, etc.

Yes lots of the outcomes were predictable really but they played then so well it worked. The game of darts was an example where you knew what would happen but it was great.

PS - big EPL (English Premier League) guy that does watch soccer. The soccer was not great to be honest but it didn't bother me.

Finished a while back. Really liked it. Not much more to say that wasn't already covered here.

Thanks for bumping this thread. Really loved the show. Yeah, it was kind of predictable and cheesy at times, but I honestly just found myself smiling a lot while i was watching it. And I love all of the random deep cut references they throw in (underhills, PRACTICE?!?!?!, etc).

I watched this on my own because I honestly didn't think it would be my wife's kind of show. Now that I told her about it, I'm thinking about watching it again with her.

I started this show back in the Fall and stopped after 2 eps. Just couldn't get past the Major League vibes. Gave it another shot with the girlfriend and we watched it in 2 days. Very glad I went back. Great show. The fish out of water aspect really felt more like a reverse fish out of water. Took England a longer while to figure out Ted, than Ted figuring out England.

Just remembered how much Ted's opinion on tea made me laugh...."That is garbage water".

Rebecca: "How do you take your tea?"
Ted: "I take it right back to the counter because someone has made a terrible mistake"

yeah I loved that cuz I'm the same way about tea. Hate it.

My. usual response to people is:

"It's leaves floating in water and dissolving - so basically pond water? No thanks."

That is seriously my only complaint about the show. Thankfully the " live action" is so rare, it doesn't distract a ton. I do wish it was better though. The rest of the show: top notch

My only complaint is that Juno Temple isn't in more scenes. And she's in a lot!

Yeah they had just a few on pitch moments really outside of practice. Unrealistic.

But they were smart enough to limit that and mostly do locker room stuff.

Just out of curiosity.... what movie has the best on the pitch scenes? This is coming from someone who does not watch it at all. Absolutely love the show!

Hmmmm...there are not many really...most are about fans, managers, etc. and involve little play except from real players and then the stars reactions. Like the British version of Fever Pitch (the US version was baseball , the UK original was soccer and starred Colin Firth and followed the Arsenal 88/89 season). There are some great documentaries, one about Diego MAradona in particular is good.

For actual soccer by the actors:

Victory (or Escape to Victory in UK) a WWII POW movie starring Stallone and Pele actually had good soccer because Pele....and several other real players were in it too.

Mean Machine was sort of the British soccer version of The Longest Yard - so prison soccer movie.

Bend it Like Beckham was not bad really. Just you know girls soccer.

Thanks! Victory was my only other reference..... we all wanted to do a bicycle kick as a kid. That's about the sum of my soccer knowledge.

It's just like sports in any movie or show, it's never very good. Luckily this show isn't really about soccer.

Do it. I tried out the first episode on my own, and yelled "Honey, come here, you've got to watch this with me" right after. We've seen the whole series twice, and she wants to watch it a third time through.

It could be better though. Major league did an ok job, but unfortunately it's just hard to do with sports where you can't hide the players/actors face. I always found it funny that a bunch of doctors that I've known/talked to/read about always cite Scrubs as the most accurate show about doctors. I hope this goes the same route since they share creative teams. (Not dissimilarly, Veep always gets cited as the most accurate political show, so it may be a comedy thing)

Also, I do hope they get into more of the "soccer stuff" in future seasons, both on and off the pitch, like the fandom/hooliganism, fan racism, international competitions (like champions league), transfers(which they will definitely have to do this next season), etc. So many directions they could go which has me as excited for any show in recent memory.

Also, Victory was also my first thought. I would also say Mike Bassett:England Manager but they may have used real action shots (it's been a while since I've watched it but it's hysterical so I need to go back and rewatch) and The Damned United. Which also used limited scenes on the pitch from what I can remember but wasn't real footage if I recall

If you want an EPL that has good soccer, and an appearance by David Beckham try

"Goal: The Dream Begins"

It follows a Mexican American making the Newcastle squad;

You should recognize most if not all of the actors

Big fan of the show and bummed that it was only 10 episodes. I flew threw it and now it's back to murder/suspense shows. Been the only show in a while that is a comedy that I enjoyed.

Because of Olivia Wilde? They separated a year ago...just became more publicly known recently. Not sure when writing and production began on Season 1 but some of those themes Ted experienced going through the divorce may have already been a result of what he was going through personally. Who knows.

Re-watching with the wife. If you loved the show and have watched it once, I really recommend rolling through it again if you have the time. There are several things that I've heard this time that I didn't catch the first time because I burned through a bunch of the episodes while working from home during the day.
