Let me remind you of this criteria of this game:

Quote:

The contest is best movie of the 1980s

Maybe you are reading "best box office success" into it, but that ain't there.

Next you're gonna say Britney Spears is a better musical talent than the foo fighters because of record sales.
The voting ran for 24 hours. Terminator got 253 votes, Dune got 28. Close one.

Popularity vs quality.

You drive me crazy

The voting for Round 1 of Action/Adventure has ended. No real surprises.

Results
#1 Top Gun 99%, #32 Kickboxer 1%

#2 Raiders of the Lost Ark 99%, #31 Licence to Kill 1%

#3 The Goonies 96%, #30 Above the Law 4%

#4 Die Hard 97%, #29 The Dead Pool 3%

#5 Lethal Weapon 99%, #28 Action Jackson 1%

#6 Batman 89%, #27 A View to A Kill 11%

#7 First Blood 79%, #26 Jewel of the Nile 21%

#8 Rocky III 71%, #25 Octop*ssy 29%

#9 Big Trouble in Little China 74%, #24 Tango & Cash 26%

#10 Red Dawn 59%, #23 Crocodile Dundee 41%

#11 Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade 89%, #22 Commando 11%

#12 Lethal Weapon 2 64%, #21 Bloodsport 36%

#13 Rocky IV 64%, #30 Silverado 36%

#19 Indiana Jones and the Temple of Dooom 76%, #14 Rambo: First Blood Part 2 24%

#15 Young Guns 63.1%, #18 Romancing the Stone 36.9%

#16 Road House 71.2%, #17 For Your Eyes Only 29%

But now we get to the real heavy hitters. The comedies. This was originally going to be a 64-movie total tournament, but I had so many candidates for comedies (79) that I had to expand to 128. And it still wasn't enough for the comedies, because there are so many greats.
You're going to hate the seeding, you're going to hate me for leaving off whatever movie I left off that you love, and you're going to hate each other for being so stupid and picking MOVIE A OVER MOVIE B. Seriously, this is the worst. I want to punch myself in the face for the #12-#21 matchup.

You're right, let me start the bracket over.

On a serious note, will probably leave this one open Saturday and Sunday and into Monday a.m. since it's a holiday weekend.

Ghostbusters vs. Spies Like Us?!?!

I'm supposed to choose between those two?!?!

Damn you, man!

I've just never thought of it as a comedy. Great movie, and definitely funny moments, but I've always thought of it as more of a drama.

#4 Ferris Bueller's Day Off
vs
#29 Planes, Trains & Automobiles

That's painful man. Like choosing between my kids. 2 John Hughes classics head to head.

OMG this is getting worse and worse.....

#8 Raising Arizona
vs
#25 The Breakfast Club

A cult classic vs a John Hughes classic

#10 A Fish Called Wanda
vs
#23 Fletch

Two oddball comedies that both worked. I loved them both.

Plus those others mentioned above.....Toughest category by far.

I'm definitely ok with Breakfast Club being called a comedy - tons of funny moments.

But Risky Business? Total drama movie that just has a few comedic moments (Guido the killer pimp, drowning the car, etc.). Not a laugh out loud movie imho. But I see it described as a coming of age teen comedy so....alright. And anyway it's still better than Three Amigos a mostly painful film with a couple of funny bits.

Why are you people bttching about having to make tough decisions. Either its happening now or three rounds from now.

It's not like John Hughes is going to hang a S16 banner in his garage.

Some omissions:

Gremlins
When Harry Met Sally
Naked Gun
Good Morning Vietnam
Christmas Vacation (big wtf on this one)
Little Shop of Horrors

The most notable omission is probably anyone else doing the work of coming up with the bracket.

Any list of great 80s movies without the original Vacation - probably the greatest comedy of all time with close competition to Blazing Saddles - is not credible.

It's the #6 seed

  • Coming to America
  • Ghostbusters
  • Beverly Hills Cop
  • Ferris Bueller's Day Off
  • Airplane!
  • National Lampoon's Vacation
  • Big
  • Raising Arizona

  • Beetlejuice

Maybe A&M needs to start offering Reading Comprehension as a credit.
