Remember Michael Jordan to the Max? Another great Jordan doc, also with a ton of footage from his final season with the Bulls. The use of the score from Legends of the Fall in this trailer gives me chills every time...

That just reminded me, I had all of these on VHS growing up and watched them no less than 20 times each, if not far more. I can't believe I've never thought to look them up on YouTube until now. So many clips, interview excerpts, and music queues I had forgotten about until just now...

Michael Jordan: Come Fly With Me (1989)

Michael Jordan's Playground (1991)

Michael Jordan: Air Time (1994)

Agreed, if i needed to win a game or have someone take the last shot, I'd take Kobe 7 days a week over LBJ.

You guys see Lambieer on ESPN today? I love that guy, the NBA could use a Lambieer on every team.

Not to derail, but here's some of his best work. That first shot at Karl Malone makes me proud to be an American.

99 Bulls only having to play a 50 game regular season would have run over the Spurs in the Finals. Over-the-hill Mario Elie vs. Jordan? Sean Elliott trying to guard PIppen when he plays point forward? And veteran Rodman vs. rookie Tim Duncan would have been really interesting. Ducan was a great rookie and became an all-time great, but Rodman knew every trick in the book on how to disrupt a big guy.

The real matchup that would have decided that series would have been the Will Perdue vs. Bill Wenngton.

If the Spurs were so weak, how did they go 15-2 in the '99 playoffs?

By the way, Duncan's rookie year was 97-98. You also seem to forget that the Spurs had David Robinson as their starting center.
I'm sure the Bulls would have had a hard time stopping David Robinson's incredible 15 PPG average that season.

I never said the Spurs were weak, I said the Bulls would have run them over. They went 15-2 in the post-season because they were the best team, and in era of ugly ball, they were awesome on defense and had Duncan - apologies on getting his rookie season wrong - and Robinson gracioulsy moving to the role of rebound/defense guy. All credit to them - they won the title! But in theory it is very difficult to imagine them beating the Jordan/Pippen/Kukoc/Rodman Bulls.

So the problem with this hypothetical is people assuming the Bulls could keep the team together from a salary cap standpoint. Even if they kept egos in check, you'd have to lose one of those four Bulls (and it ain't Kukoc cause he has a contract). Pippen definitely isn't taking a discount, and they changed the rule that allowed Jordan to make so much in 98.

Let's say Pippen leaves but they keep the rest of the core. Starting five of Jordan, Kukoc, Rodman, Dickey Simpkins, and Randy Brown....they seem a bit thin too. Spurs might beat them, especially if they can close off the paint with the twin towers.

This is going to sound sappy as hell, but watching this series, during this time, feels so incredibly special. To the point where when I think back on the whole lockdown thing, this doc will be one of the rare positives - if not THE positive - that comes to mind. It's just so damn good, and makes me appreciate more than ever the fact that I got to witness all of this first hand as a kid/teenager in the '80s/'90s. I got to grow up wearing Air Jordans and being inspired by this guy. Nothing in modern times even compares to how incredibly iconic Jordan was, and the more I watch, the more Jordan feels like he was somehow conjured out of thin air to be this perfectly engineered figure of the times, one who impacted sports, culture, marketing, and design like no other figure I can think of, in just the right ways.

That, and he's funny/cool as hell in his modern-day interviews. He was starting to get a bad wrap after his Hall of Fame speech, then there was of course the crying meme, and then combined with the dominance of LeBron, it felt like Jordan had dropped a couple of pegs or like the world had soured on him a bit. But he's not only completely undone all of that in just four episodes of television, he's re-established his dominance like never before, while making his "assh*lesness" and his drive - along with his relentless pursuit to hold others to his standards - somehow almost endearing. Especially compared to most modern athletes, even the mega-stars, who now only serve to show how rare Jordan truly was. In other words, I somehow like and appreciate Jordan more now than I did even when I was a super-fan in real-time.

This whole thing really is remarkable.

Agree totally. Iconic. Once in a generation. And without any social media to hype him up. It was all real.

I'll admit that I had been wondering if LeBron was better, but after this documentary and the plethora of articles it has inspired, I have realized the error in my ways. I don't know if this was in the documentary, in this thread, or an article, but somebody made a point that sold the deal to me:

That if MJ, Larry Bird, and Magic Johnson had decided to pick one team to join after his first contract ended, and then he rejoined the Bulls after they had gotten the full supporting cast, MJ probably would have 9 or 10 rings. That MJ didn't have to team shop. He made the crappy team he was on that much better.

And I don't know if it's just me, but I haven't watched NBA in years. It doesn't seem to have the same vibe about it. I'd like to say it was all the recent China defending and America hatred, but I stopped watching long before that. I can't put my finger on it. Watching this show brings back memories of the "glory years" of the NBA. Maybe it's because that was during my childhood. Maybe kids today will consider today the glory years 30 years from now. But somehow, I doubt it.

Quote:

Henri Lorenzi, the legendary hotel manager, had complained about the number and the aggressiveness of the NBA's security people. "Do you realize who is gambling in my casino right now?" Lorenzi said to the NBA's international liaison, Kim Bohuny. Lorenzi ticked off the names of politicians, movie stars and even tennis immortal Bjrn Borg. "No one will care that much about this team," he said.

"Well, we'll see," replied Bohuny.

When the team bus pulled up, there was such a rush of fans to see the players that some fans crashed through the glass doors at the entrance. "I get your point," said Lorenzi.

Awesome read! Thats a game with a roster usually only dreamt up on NBA2k. I watched all 4 episodes yesterday to catch up and wow what a career MJ has had.

I also read an article on ESPN about Toni Kukoc and how everyone hated him because he was "Jerry's guy". Wonder if this is something that MJ didnt want shown. Would probably make him look worse. But the dude was a winner.

I think Lebron is the most skilled player of all time. If I was building a team for a pick up game or an all star team where the results didn't matter, I'd pick Lebron first. I if I was building a franchise, Jordan is my #1.

If LeBron had the killer mentality like Jordan (and even Jordan Lite aka Kobe) had he'd easily be the GOAT. But he doesn't and that's a fact.

And? No one is claiming he's a great person. Plus I think that speech had been widely misunderstood. Then again I haven't watched since it aired live and I don't remember all he said.

I still think Lebron James is the single most talented NBA player ever. Whether he's "the GOAT'? I won't argue against Jordan. I just can't fathom any other person being put on the cover of Sports Illustrated at the age of 16 with the caption "CHOSEN ONE" and not only live up to that expectation, but exceed it. In the era of non stop social media coverage and hot takes, Lebron ascended to the point that it's actually worth debating his status as the GOAT.

i agree. I am bias to Jordan, but Lebron has accomplished so much and been a model citizen with decades of hype around him. Both sides have valid agruments.
