Corgan is a good example, like CCR and John Fogerty, where the band should have shut their mouths and kept them shut while an insufferable but legit genius did their work.

Smashing Pumpkins best stuff never got near the radio, and Corgan did plenty of intentionally antagonistic stuff with his business people to make it so.

You've reminded me how much I loved listening to Incubus during my deployments. Ahhhhh, a good Friday for an Incubus adventure!

Yeah, true. I do love Where is my Mind and The Light. I like most of Common's stuff. UMC is oddly my favorite.

Some of these hurt me on a personal level either because they are considered the signature song, or because they are not recognized as awesome, or both. Examples:

REM -- Everybody Hurts - correct, not their greatest, but sig song is "The One I Love"
Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart -- I can't. One of the greatest club dance tunes ever.
The Smiths -- How Soon Is Now? -- Sig song is "There is a Light That Never Goes Out"; and both are awesome
The Pixies -- Where is My Mind" -- I say "Here Come's Your Man" is sig, but Where Is is awesome

Depeche Mode -- Personal Jesus -- Not a sig, even for that album -- Enjoy the Silence. Not terrible either. Sig? Too Many others to name, but maybe Everything Counts. All awesome

GNR - Paradise City, way less sig than Sweet Child and Welcome to the Jungle. But agree, don't like that one.

Queen - Bohemian Rhapsody. Uh, We Will Rock You says hi.

Bill Withers -- Lean on Me. What? How can you not like that song?

The Cure -- Friday I'm in Love. One of my least favorite Cure songs but not their sig. Boys Don't Cry.

New Contributions:

Alanis Morissette -- Ironic
Beach Boys -- California Girls; David Lee Roth -- same

Wrong. Losing my Religion is their signature song. That song is what the majority of people would say it is (not just the people with bad taste in music like REM fans)

How Soon is Now is very awesome so agree there.

But you went through all that about songs not being signature. Isn't You Oughta Know her signature song? Maybe I just think it is better than Ironic and I'm wrong.

I think that is one of their best songs, but I worry that the Beach Boys signature is probably going to come from their post-Pet Sounds beach stuff, like Cali Girls or (ugh) Kokomo.

REM's signature song is Losing My Religion

Where is My Mind is definitely The Pixies signature, and of course a lot of that is due to its resurgence via Fight Club

Friday I'm In Love is much more of a signature song than Boys Don't Cry. I don't even think that's an argument. I'd even put Just Like Heaven or Lovesong over it

Van Morrison has said he is a bit mystified by the success of Brown Eyed Girl, a song he wrote quickly and didn't think much about.

What a talent to do that. Reminds me of Elvis Costello - writing a lot of catchy stuff quickly and building a deep and consistent catalogue as mostly one guy.

Wonderwall is one of the lamer more boring Oasis songs IMO. It's always perplexed me how it became their biggest hit. I think the rest of the What's the Story Morning Glory album and Definitely Maybe before it are better pretty much across the board.

I freaking hate this song. It's the official song of Minnesota United and it's sung after every win and I love going to games and cheering the team, but that song is tha worst

I don't hate that song, but it is the one that everyone names when they talk about it and its definitely not my favorite. Maybe you dislike this song just as much, but Ive always liked I Will Play My Game Beneath the Spin Light

Weezer - Buddy Holly. The song is actually fine, but its every fake fan's favorite song and not in their top 5.

Saw them (The Pixies) from the 2nd row at ACL in 04. This is definitely not my favorite song of theirs, but when you hear 60k+ people singing the "oooooooo" part at the beginning of that song... Still gives me chills. It was incredible.

Eat It by Weird Al Yancovic. I wouldn't even put that song in his top 100. But everyone everyone I talk to about Weird Al over the last 30 years wants to talk about Eat It. I have something those people can eat.

The Downward Spiral is one of the greatest albums of all time and Closer fits well in context with that album. However you are 100% right that Closer has turned in to a frat party anthem and even though they have a huge catalog it is still probably Nine Inch Nails most famous song.

I suppose I should rephrase. I don't HATE quiet things. That's why I said hate is a strong word. It's just not my favorite, but I know that's how most discovered Brand New.

Love Deja Entendu as a whole, Spin Light included.

FTR, Brand New is probably my all time favorite band.

California Girls is NOT post Pet Sounds. And the idea that any Beach Boys song after Pet Sounds would qualify as their signature song is laughable. Pet Sounds is a brilliant album and I love it, but 99.9% of the population would name ANYTHING of theirs before it as their signature song. The only exception being Good Vibrations and Wilson wanted that to be on Pet Sounds.

As a huge fan of 2Pac. I cant stand California Love. I dont care about Dre's production, the video, or the fact it was his comeback song. I was never a fan.

Right, but many were introduced (me) or reintroduced to the BB by 1974 Endless Summer, which put the beach songs back on the charts, many higher than the first time. For me, it was my first taste of the BB, and didn't get to Pet Sounds until much later. So I equate the revival of the beach to a post-Pet Sounds BB era.

While it's not the song that put them on the map, I'd put it up there with Good. It's certainly as much of a staple in their catalog, especially live. I've probably heard it more while out in public as well, for whatever that's worth.

Some bands have multiple signature songs. Smashing Pumpkins definitely apply here.

Anyway, Lightning Crashes is another I wouldn't mind never hearing again.

I think these should be songs you hated from the start. Not just because you got tired of hearing them way too much.
