As a huge Pumpkins fans, I feel like the tracks that became huge from MCIS aren't the best songs. I do love 1979 and Tonight, Tonight, but Zero and Bullet with Butterfly Wings are both kind of lackluster compared with other tracks off of the album. It sucks how many people think of Pumpkins and the first and only thing that comes to mind is "that rat in a cage song". Their deep cuts are usually more interesting and cooler sounding.

I kind of missed the whole Def Leppard debate by a page or so, but I remember this one kid in Junior High that was absolutely obsessed with the band. They were, popular enough, I guess, but no one really cared that much about them, except the kid that wore their concert shirts every day and drew their logos and stuff on anything he could put a marker to, it was odd, maybe some kind of Aspergers deal now that I think about it.

Had a kid like that in my junior high, except he wore an Adrenalize shirt like 2 times a week . I liked their 80's stuff but when Let's get rocked came out as the first single for that album I dismissed it as cheesy and never gave it a chance. But after seeing him wear that shirt so religiously all year, I gave it a chance and now it's my favorite album of theirs.

So thank you long haired Def Leopard kid in junior high.

I was pleased to see I'm not the only one that skips Freebird 95% of the time in comes up in my rotation. And I'm a guy that grew up and saw them 2x pre-crash.

Was thinking of this when I saw this thread. Fountains of Wayne has so many good songs but are eternally labeled as a one hit wonder just because this song was so popular.

Big 3EB fan. I still dig Semi Charmed. Takes me back to HS every time I hear it. That said, I do realize that Stephen Jenkins' style and sound is an acquired taste.

It's a complete generational thing. I'm an elder millennial and I missed that era of the 80's entirely. DF have always been a one hit wonder in my eyes. I always thought it was weird how much VH1 and rolling stone seemed obsessed with them. It hasn't been until recently that I've come to realize that they were actually a big deal.

I think part of it is the rise of grunge and backlash against hair metal. All the other "hits" from DL basically completely disappeared from rock radio by the early 90's and Sugar was the only song that would show up in movies / partys / radio.

I can't change the station fast enough. It's not the song as a whole and I wouldn't say I hate it but the 7th guitar solo is a bit excessive. Don't get me started on the live version.

great thread. I agree with most of these, not because I dislike the songs, but because I've heard them a million times. It impacts concert ticket purchases for me, too. 30 or 40 year old band performing "just the hits"? I'm probably out unless I can secure a top tier seat in a decent venue. Will not be spending a hundred bucks to sit in the back to hear the same ole stuff over and over again.

Edited to add... setlist.fm is a great tool. if the encore is one of these said songs, it helps because I beat traffic every time. I used to never leave a show before the end of the last tune.

For me, Def Leppard's Hysteria is their best song. I like them but do pass over Pour Some Sugar

The Cure is one of my favorite bands but I absolutely loathe Friday I'm in Love.

Cheap Trick is the most underrated band in rock n roll history. I have many opinions about them, about the albums, and about the production on some albums, and the songs in general.

They had one #1, which is ridiculous. They didn't write it, which is ridiculous. They were soon thereafter dropped by the label despite a good follow-up by measure of sales and quality, which is ridiculous. They then had two outstanding albums - two of the very best - buried on small labels, which is ridiculous.

The Flame. Ugh.

I can't even. I should have been in charge of their career.

That may be their only #1 hit but I'd bet 99% of the population would name I Want You To Want Me or Surrender before The Flame.

It's fine. I like it ok, though much less now after being a fan for so long.

But bloody hell there are so many better songs, and Keith Richards was right to consider it below average when Mick was pushing it.

Nada Surf was a great band that is largely only known for a novelty song.

Flaming Lips had a similar fate, but more popularity.

I remember at ACL '05 when Noel introduced it as "This one's for the ugly girls".

Aside from the first album, Oasis generally had better deep tracks that weren't singles, especially their B-sides.

From that same era and a band that battled Oasis for biggest in the world was Smashing Pumpkins, and their hit Bullet With Butterfly Wings is nearly unlistenable to me. Others will say that's not their signature hit, but it's one of them. That was definitely a piss break song the last couple times I saw them live.

Also, Smells Like Teen Spirit sucks.

One Week by Barenaked Ladies may be the worst. Hate it.

Just realized I don't love them. My bad. Still bears worth mentioning for how awful it is.
