Well, the man likes to branch out. I enjoyed his country album and the one with the brass. I'll at least give this one a listen, but, this is interesting...

He's no longer saving country music!

If this don't get him a car commercial, nothin will.

Hmmm....yeah, that's a bit different. I think this is why I prefer Jason Isbell. At least most of his songs still sound "country".

I dig it

Looking forward to the whole album/cartoon. Think it's interesting what he's doing

Sturgill kind of burned his bridges in Nashville. He probably has to embrace more of the 'alternative' sound to appeal to a different audience. 'The Dead Don't Die' still has a country/Americana feel to it, but I don't think he'll put out an entire album with that same feel. He's probably going to mix it up more, because that's where he has to go.

Or given his weirdness and inability to stay boxed in, it's not where he has to go but where he was always going to go.

I like it as well. should be interesting to hear the full album.

Actually, I'm Ok with it.
He has shown a tendency and desire to delve a bit off into funk and southern rock fusion sounds. As long as he keeps mixing it up and hitting us with true deep country songs here and there -- nice blend of sound.

I like it

It won't go on any country, honky tonk, or Americana playlist of mine but it's different.

If they got rid of the lazer sound effects and such it would help me like it. As is, I don't hate it, but won't buy the album unless there is better stuff on it.

Not bad. Will have to listen without the stupid comic video. I love the way he mixes it up musically.

Yeah, probably. I just never got the impression that was his direction. Something anti-establishment and grassroots for sure. But this is definitely a shift. Not a critique as much as just an observation.

I'm not a huge fan of this song but I respect his willingness to play whatever kind of music he feels like. I wasn't thrilled with the last album when I first heard it but it has really grown on me. Hopefully this one will too.

I hated it for about 15 seconds but it started to grow on me. Sounds like something you'd get he sat in with EODM, and that's not a bad thing at all.

To me Sturgill Simpson reminds me of Pearl Jam. Started off great and then just kind of faded out of my liking with every album.

I was reading another thread on this board while this played and this gif synced up with the song perfectly.

As for the song itself, it's pretty groovy. Never gotten into Sturgill but I admire he mixes it up and keeps it interesting.

Dude is a kook. But he's always shown signs of this being a possibility. I remember reading an article about him when Hightop Mountain came out about how he didn't really see himself as country. He refused to wear boots, wears new balance on stage, and was REALLY into EDM and japaname

That said, this is terrible, no matter what standard you judge it by.

Y'all already know this but if you want a country album listen to Country Squire. That should tide you over until something else comes out.

And I wouldn't hold your breath on him ever going back. Sturgill is on his own path now and has entered the wilderness.

This is only bad news to the "Saving Country Music" fanboy types who are always looking for the next King Arthur to return purity and prosperity to the land.

To normal people who just listen to whatever they like, it might be really cool or might make no difference to their lives at all. He was never on the radio, so it's not like he's at risk of offending the 5 people in the world who determine which 20 songs the FM stations play.

But I am also looking forward to David Hasselhof covering Rhinestone Cowboy with Charlie Daniels.

I freaking love it! A Sailor's Guide to Earth is my favorite Simpson album, though, so the less "country" the better for me.

No Code is the best Pearl Jam album of all time which came 4th and Yield kicked ass after it. Terrible analogy.

Probably should have listened to this before commenting on the PJ comment.

This would be a great song if I heard it randomly in a bar and I would have imagined Damon Albarn produced it and looked over and asked somebody what is theeeis?!

Sounds pretty good actually but knowing that it is Sturgill now is well...rather jarring.

I'm more with Frok on this one.

LOVED the first three albums, then No Code and Yield weren't great to me. They bottomed out with Riot Act, which I've gone back to numerous times with the same opinion that it's a turd. Then they made a comeback with the last 3 albums.

Huge Sturgill fan. I've seen him live a few times and he's incredible. This song is much better without the stupid cartoon video.
