That's a super interesting wrinkle, re: the not being able to announce it in the marketing until it happens. I wasn't aware of that.

Same, that's really interesting. I had wondered about this as well as my wife wanted to see it and I was surprised it wasn't going on demand. But apparently it is

Apparently News of the World will be going VOD as well, around the same time, just FYI, as they're both Universal movies. Definitely looking forward to finally catching each at home.

Cool, will probably watch that one as well.

I'm more intrigued by what happens with Universal's other releases though, it's gonna get interesting. For example...

Finished a big update to the OP today, added a ton of titles to the release calendar, fixed a few others, etc. I maintain the OP mainly for myself, so I can keep track of everything, but it's always there in case anyone finds it handy, as I keep it updated best I can in real-time.

As we finally enter 2021, with theater-going hopefully back to some semblance of (a new) normal by summer, the second half of the year could be one of the most exciting times for movies in a long while. Not just because we'll finally have movie-going back in-full, and can celebrate that in and of itself, but because there are so many potentially awesome movies on the horizon, waiting for release, and once the vaccine finally breaks the dam, it's going to be insane.

And I cannot wait.

Honestly not trying to pick a fight or argument, asking a legit questionTCTTS....when you say, "once the vaccine finally breaks the dam...", what do you mean?

That's such a vague statement, and as we've seen since the beginning of the pandemic, its those types of statements that are used as a dangling carrot on a stick to keep people hoping for a return to normal while in reality the goalposts keep getting pushed further back.

I'm not accusing you of doing that, for God's sake I know you're just posting your opinion on TA, lol. Rather, I'm asking you to quantify that statement based on your opinion (being in the industry) what that means.

Is there criteria set for when the studios will let the flood gates loose and release movies into theaters?
Are they simply waiting for Cuomo and Newsome to decide that theaters can reopen?
TCTTS

I mean... I'd say it's fairly common knowledge that a sizable chunk of the country is waiting to get the vaccine before going back to theaters (and bars and indoor concerts and indoor weddings any other large, indoor gatherings), myself included. Studios simply aren't going to release their big-ticket blockbusters to theaters until they can maximize their profits, which means the potential for sold out theaters, which means a vaccine. That's not a political statement or anything, that's just basic supply/demand/reality. And yeah, a key part of that is Cuomo and Newsome allowing theaters to open again for the two biggest markets in the country.

Everything I read, and everyone I talk to in the industry, seems to be of the opinion that, come May or June or so, we should start to see studios finally releasing blockbusters in theaters nation-wide again. Basically, over the course of the summer is when we'll hopefully start to see a return to whatever the new normal is. If I had to guess, Black Widow on May 7 could mark the unofficial kickoff/return, but even that might be cutting it close, depending on how the vaccine rollout goes. My gut tells me No Time to Die moves one last time - I'm afraid whatever the virus/vaccine situation is in April still won't make financial sense for studios, in terms of potential for sold out theaters - but I would bet by June that things will hopefully be roaring again, theater-going-wise.

I honestly do hope sooner rather than later, and find your estimate of June exciting. The only thing I'll question is whether the bulk of people (nation-wide mind you) are waiting for the vaccine before doing those activities versus simply waiting for those activities to open without restrictions (capacity limts).

I can tell you that what I'm seeing in Florida (and I oversee work across the state) is that the only thing holding back a normal reopening of society is the governmental occupancy limits. The everyday person is interacting with other people jjst like normal - mask or no mask. I truly believe the majority of the population here would pack back into a theater, sports stadium, etc. tomorrow if there were allowed to, vaccine or not.

So I'm not sure if its the population waiting on a vaccine, or the various governments not allowing places to reopen full capacity. But that's a conversation for another board.

Yeah, I hear you. That said, I purposely used the word "sizable" when talking about those waiting on the vaccine, not "majority" or "bulk." Whatever the number or percentage, it's enough to cause the studios to balk. And I'm afraid that WW84 opening to only $16M last weekend basically proved their concern. That, and, you have to admit that Florida is at the forefront of not-giving-a-damn when it comes to the virus. Be that good or bad, I wouldn't say they're an entirely accurate representation of the country as a whole.

Have they released any VOD revenue numbers? I'd be curious if something like No Time To Die, that falls in that gray area time wise, might be a candidate to release both in theaters and on demand if that makes the financials more viable.

Speaking for myself, I've got a higher risk situation at home so I'll be waiting things out a bit longer than I'd like, but I'd pay $20 for a new Bond rental in a heartbeat.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?
AG
I haven't seen any VOD revenue numbers yet.

That said, I feel like Bond would have gone to streaming by now if MGM was able to do so. It sounds like the Broccoli family has veto power of those types of decisions, and are hell-bent on a theatrical release. Maybe they bite the bullet, stick with an April theatrical release, then go VOD in May or something, but my guess would be it gets delayed to July or so for an exclusive theatrical release.

Lol, yeah, there's a whole lot of not-give-a-damn down here regarding Covid at this point. And I really do find it hard to get a grasp on the nation as a whole. Every media source on both sides of the aisle seem to be "reporting" their opinions and viewpoints rather than being an unbiased lens on the world.

But I too worry that WW84'S anemic opening did more harm than good. Gotta be honest, we watched it on HBO Max out of pure laziness, but if it had only come out in theaters there's a good chance we would have ventured to the theater to see it. So there's 3 tickets that weren't purchased because of that decision. Multiply that affect across the nation....and you get my point. I like that I didnt drop $50 on that turd, but hate the trickle down effect it might have.
TCTTS
How long do you want to ignore this user?

That's good point. That box office number could have very well been higher had it been in theaters only. It's so hard to say, and yeah, I have no real feel either for the nation's willingness as a whole to return to theaters. I have friends in Texas who are going to theaters right now, but then people like my parents in Texas won't be going back until there's a vaccine. It's almost case-by-case it seems.
FL_Ag1998

You're dead on, its case by case at this point. I have little concern for its affects on me, but want my elderly mother to continue to take precautions.

If, once the vaccine becomes available to the everyday person, state governments decide to let everything reopen fully and leave it up to people to interact with society at their own comfort level then I think your timeline is do-able. I'm afraid though the two most important states regarding movie markets (NY and CA) won't be that progressive when it comes to reopening.

Regardless, my wife and I are going to see News of the World tomorrow at our local theater. Surprised at how excited I am to see a movie on the big screen.
TCTTS

Yeah, May/June might be too optimistic, but I'm confident that at some point this summer we'll be back to normal, and that next fall will be absolutely incredible, with the amount of big-name directors who have projects in the works for awards season. Combined with some potentially great blockbusters around that time (Dune, Eternals, M:I 7, Spider-Man 3, etc), the September through December stretch this year could be an all-timer, especially when you factor in the the sheer elation from society simply being able to function normally again by then.

And I'm jealous that you get to see News of the World in a theater tomorrow. Curious to hear what you think. I'm afraid, at the absolute earliest, that I'm likely going to go at least 14 months without visiting a movie theater - March '20 to May '21- if not a month or two longer than that, which I still can't quite comprehend.
