The other daughters must feel left out when the family reminisces about having sex with B.

They may not admit it, but I get the feeling no one ended up left out of anything.

I still don't understand how they didn't blink an eye at the guy "needing to sleep in bed with their daughter for therapy" angle. How in the world does that makes sense, no matter what what year it is.

As a parent of a 10 year old, the amount of naivete they claimed is disgusting.

I agree. I've known many Mormans that are all around excellent people and contribute above and beyond to society in general. That said, I don't think they are as much committed to the founder as they are committed to the "club" or sect, which is strongly pro American and pro family. Hard to argue against that.

That said, the complicity of the parents is borderline criminal, even if they are that stupid and naive, they protected their reputation at the expense of their daughter. It's my belief that the father is a closeted homosexual, period. I tend to be a little more liberal on homosexuality, but in this case, I think it's obvious the father had an infatuation with the criminal and it led to the events that unfolded.

Was B played by Ari Gold?

Borderline is a generous way of putting it. They had a 40+ year old man telling them that he wanted to marry their 12 year old daughter and then stayed in contact with him after he had already been arrested for kidnapping. The mom sending her daughter to Jackson Hole for two weeks was absolutely the most wild ass part of their whole decision making. The fact that the dad didn't lose his **** on her after it is mind blowing too.

Dad was swapping favors with him too. Don't think for a second the tug job was a 1 time only situation.

IMO dad's decision making changes given that.

The only other times I have seen parents this negligent and clueless is when the abuser is their significant other, usually a stepdad or boyfriend that isn't the child's bio dad. The mom's love for the abuser clouds any vision to see obvious red flags because they can't stand the thought that their true love might be a bad person. Good theory. It is pretty clear that the dad's homosexual relationship with B was a lot more than one handy he talked about.

Not sure why they had Christian Bale gain all that weight to play Dick Cheney in "Vice", they could have saved a lot of money and hired this dad. He looks just like Cheney

Keep in mind- for the book that was written previous to the documentary they didn't even disclose either of the parents messed around with 'B.' They were definitely hiding stuff. By the time the documentary was made, B was dead, so easier for Dad to say it was a one time thing/limit scope.

Lastly, dad was a florist and LDS. Very likely a closet homosexual that the predator sensed and played off of it to get to Jan. Probably, also part of why wife was sexually frustrated too.

Believe by the time they had sent her to Jackson Hole the "secret" that the dad was fooling around with him had been revealed. Might have the timeline messed up though.

I can't stop shaking my head in disbelief over this whole story.

There are con artist out in the world that can sense an easy mark.....and the pedo must have sensed a feminine weakness in the father.

I can't picture a normal straight man that would allow another man that much access to his wife and daughter if he wasn't in on it also.

This was Idado in the 1970's....so it was probably like the 1950's in real time. The idea of being labeled Gay was probably enough guilt and shame for the parents to hide a lot of the weird things going on with their neighbor.

What a wild ride. I asked myself a couple times "why didn't they interview his family," or "I wonder what his kids think?" They probably changed their names and don't want anyone to know they are related to the guy.

Can you imagine how conflicted that dad must've been? The shame of being a man milker does some crazy things to the psyche. That was slightly understandable the time when Jan was missing and the mom was pretty much willing to put up with anything to get her girl back.

When they were idiots and let her go to work for him, the only rational I could work out was that they were afraid if they did not let Jan get her way, then she would run away again with B and never see them again.

If that was the only sign of 'wtf' we had been shown by the parents, then I could agree with your rationalization....but it's not, and I simply don't. Idk if it's cowardice or sheer stupidity, but her parents were 100% complicit. It's all just baffling on so many levels.

Its just kid stuff...

They are more than stupid and naive. They are self centered and heartless. The mom freaking had an affair with the predator AFTER he kidnapped the daughter. The father screwed up the first kidnapping case because he was being blackmailed about giving an old fashioned. They waited 10 days before reporting the second abduction because they were afraid of what the community would think.

Ugh, these folks keep talking about making "mistakes". They made conscious bad choices, not mistakes.

This must be the first movie/documentary I've purposely stopped midway through in at least 10 years. I can sit through and watch most anything but the level of stupid here was too much to take. From everything I gather this nonsense really went down but it was so dumbfounding I couldn't believe it. This whole family is just stupid...to the point of being criminal for their ignorance.
