Those were some of the stupidest people I've ever encountered. I am leaning strongly towards the "there has to be more to this story" angle.

Hard to believe any of this when it's this ridiculous and we only hear one side in these interviews. I don't remember on the documentary any interviews with his wife (who I think may be the most BSC of them all) or any of his kids (this weird behavior had to manifest itself in some kind at home).

I call BS on a lot of this story.

Just finished. Those parents are absolute morons. It's perplexing to me how stupid they are.

I'm not sure how we made it all the way through. Sort of waiting for the big reveal that all of that was pure fiction. Unbelievable on so many levels. Jaw dropping stupidity throughout.

If you think your 12 year old daughter is different after going to Mexico with B and getting married, why don't you have her talk to a psychiatrist? You know maybe one session, it probably wouldn't be a bother to anyone.

Both parents should be in prison for child endangerment. Stupidity isn't an excuse for allowing your daughter to be in those situations.

It was weird watching it. The parents are just as responsible for what happened to their daughter as the pervert was.

I actually would pause it occasionally just to yell at the TV screen because I couldn't believe the things parents were saying. How stupid they were how naive they were and what morons they are.

They should be absolutely embarrassed to go on national television and admit what they let happen. Totally ****ed up scenario.

Allows their 12-year-old daughter to sleep next to a man for four nights a week because he claims he has therapy?

She already was uncomfortable with how much attention he gave her but yet he she let her go with him on these trips?

Didn't call the FBI for five days when she was gone because they didn't believe he was hurting her?

Father jacks off the guy because he says he's frustrated? What kind of man does that?

I just don't understand parents who would think like that. Those rapes are just as much on them.

I chalked it up to several things:

1) Early 70s. The attention to sexual deviancy wasn't even a fraction that it is now

2) Being LDS, these people were likely so sheltered their entire lives that they may as well have been living on another planet. And not just any LDS, but Picatello, Idaho LDS. Then with that background, mix in the shame of the jerkoff sessions and affair and the resulting twisted motivation to keep it quiet. These people are basically aliens to most of us.

3) They're stupid.

The level of naivete, ignorance, and outright stupidity is hard to fathom, but I can actually see it.

Also, the lust stage of a relationship has a certain power over clear thought and rationality, and can cloud what is clear as day to an outsider.

This mom was in a stale relationship that kids undoubtedly sucked the life out of. This charismatic, outgoing guy showed her a lot of attention and was banging her like her husband used to.

As far as the dad, there is no doubt in my mind that he was also engaged in a lustful relationship with the guy. Yes, he admitted to giving a handy, but he undoubtedly went further. This one has all sorts of psychological ramifications, as he was likely ashamed of it whether he enjoyed it or not.

The title should have been something like "Watch these so called parents fail in ways you wouldn't think possible"

I have a feeling the parents where on drugs through most of this. You can't be that stupid without medical help.

The only other times I have seen parents this negligent and clueless is when the abuser is their significant other, usually a stepdad or boyfriend that isn't the child's bio dad. The mom's love for the abuser clouds any vision to see obvious red flags because they can't stand the thought that their true love might be a bad person. Sometimes the mom even knows about the abuse and still doesn't care because they love their boyfriend or husband more than their own children.

This leads me to believe that both of her parents were practically in love with the guy.

I will let some of that pass but I'm sorry, they did not protect their daughter. It's hard to believe even sheltered parents would act like that. The idiot father even said he didn't see any red flags, bull**** he didn't.

Just watched this. It went from revolting, disturbing, anger over stupidity, to pure hilarity at times. What a weird ass story.

The wife hooking back up with him AFTERWARDS for 8 months? Letting the daughter go to Jackson Hole ? Not calling the cops after the abduction.
