I definitely have wondered by people thought Fallout is the best. Don't get me wrong, I think 3-6 are all awesome (and will always love the first), but I though Rogue Nation and Ghost Protocol were both better than Fallout.

IMO, the helicopter chase in 6 is hands down one of the greatest action sequences in movie history. And everything up until that point is damn good too, if not flat out incredible, as well. Overall, I think it's one of the top five action movies ever made, which puts it above MI4 and 5 for me (though I love both of those as well).

Agree with this about 6 being best of all time

3 is great!!

2,1, 3,4,4,6 in that order of worst to best with a huge gap with 2 and 1.

Nice.

I think I'd go...

1. 6
2. 5
3. 3
4. 4
5. 1
6. 2

While I think the Burj Khalifa sequence in Ghost Protocol is easily the second-best stunt in the entire franchise, I legit have more fun with 3 than I do with 4 overall.

I'd flip-flop 6 and 5 (rogue nation is so good), but otherwise have the same order

So over the last week I've been rewatching these on Paramount Plus.

1. Is still a really solid movie, even with the dated technology I still enjoyed it. The sequence breaking into the computer in Langley was still a lot of fun. The only thing that really just got on my nerves was the sequence at the end with the helicopter and the train. It was just a little bit too much, but it's a relatively small part of the film so not a big deal.

2. I tried watching it, but it was just not good, I turned it off, easily the worst entry of the franchise. I did have flashbacks to the MTV movie awards with Tom Cruise and Ben Stiller, a movie of those two would have been a better idea...had to wait for that to come full circle with Tropic Thunder

3. Not on Paramount Plus, the only one that isn't, guess I'll just need to rent it to experience it again. I'm a huge PSH fan, he alone is worth the price of admission.

4. Ghost Protocol, so much fun. The sequence in Dubai on the side of the Burj Khalifa is insane. So many different set pieces/sequences in this film, it's hard to believe they squeezed it all into one film. Had forgotten that the whole time Hunt is chasing Hendricks, he's being chased by the Russian police.

5. Rogue Nation, I hadn't seen this one in a while and I finished it last night, so damn good. Had it not been for Fallout this would easily be the best of the franchise, I had forgotten how great this movie is. Rebecca Ferguson, good lord, smoke show of smoke shows.

6. Fallout, it's next on the rewatch list but I already know it's the best of the series and in the argument for best action movie of all time.

With the exception of the deviation of the second one, and my fuzzy memory on the third, is there another franchise that just gets better every time? Watching these I just inherently think about the Daniel Craig Bond movies and how all over the map they are. Casino Royale and Skyfall are both outstanding, Spectre and No Time to Die are not...and I still don't remember anything about Quantum of Solace.

Also, Mission Impossible just knows how to cast, rarely can I think of a major player in the films that the person they cast doesn't make any sense to me. Everyone they get is great. Renner wouldn't make sense as a replacement for Cruise in the franchise, though I think they talked about him replacing Cruise eventually when he was cast in Ghost Protocol, but he's good as part of the ensemble. I love the dynamic between Cruise, Simon Pegg, and Ving Rhames. They figured out the formula for films that are just a lot of fun. Really looking forward to the last installments of this franchise.

To anyone that hasn't done a rewatch in a while, I recommend it.

Great breakdown.

Curious to hear your thoughts on your rewatch of 3. I said this earlier, but it just gets better and better for me, to the point where, despite the Burj Khalifa sequence being an all-timer for me, I like it more overall than Ghost Protocol, and have it ranked number three behind Fallout (1) and Rogue Nation (2).

5>6 IMO. I feel like 6 has an awful scene where Cavill convinces Bassett that Hunt has gone rogue. Maybe it's not as bad as I remember but it is super wooden in my recollection.

Watch this and somehow tell me this isn't the best! And what an amazing trailer too!!

I've been rewatching parts of them on whatever network has had them on recently, also own them all on digital so need to do the full rewatch.

I do agree that 3 is criminally underrated, also think Maggie Q was great casting and we should've seen her in at least one or two more films.

the Fallout trailer might be one of the best ever

I can't think of one that got me more excited to watch the movie

Cruise turned out to be the most consequential movie star of the last 35 years. And MI is better than the Bond series which I have loved for so long. Totally surprising giving all the bad headlines he has seen in his personal life.

So I decided to just go ahead and rent M:I3 before I do the Fallout rewatch, watched about half last night and I'll finish it this evening.

Positives: PSH is great and also different from the other M:I villains, not many actors can go toe to toe with Cruise and also come out on top in shared scenes. Sean Harris is perfect in Rogue Nation and Fallout as the villain, but PSH brings something to the table that none of the rest have had. I love the interrogation scene in the plane where they're trying to find out about the rabbit's foot and he's just not having it, Hunt is losing his mind, PSH is just machine-like in the best way. It's also a different version of Cruise/Hunt from the other films, the family man leading a double life. He has legit fear about the consequences of his actions for her well being.

Negatives: The way they shot the movie. The camera is always moving, side to side, all over, shaky, it legitimately takes away from the viewing experience. It feels like a Michael Bay movie. It kind of blows my mind it's not more controlled than it is. There's not much chemistry with him and some of his team, namely Maggie Q and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, they are just kind of there, the movie doesn't lose anything without them.

I'm going to hold off on my rankings until I finish this one.

Side note: I think this is the first time I saw Aaron Paul in anything as his wife's younger brother.

Fallout in the theater was about as perfect as an action movie can be to me. 4 and 5 were great, as well.

The only thing more perfect than Fallout in the theater was Topgun: Maverick.

Ok so I finished 3 last night so I feel I can properly rank these beasts.

1. Fallout
2. Rogue Nation
3. Ghost Protocol
4. M:I
5. M:I 3 - I do think that if this would have been directed by someone else it had the potential to overtake the original. PSH was just so damn good as the villain, and I do appreciate that this more in particular does a different thing with Hunt compared to the other films where he's only an agent, he's trying to balance the two parts of his life. It's probably the best acting Cruise has done in the series. With the lack of use of a compelling supporting cast I think this would have been better served if Cruise went solo, just him and PSH. I can totally see why some people would like this more than say Ghost Protocol or even the first one because of the scenes with those two together, the film as a whole was just is not as enjoyable as the most recent three films.

(Insert Springfield Gorge)

6. M:I 2 - John Woo was the perfect director for Face/Off, he was a bad choice for a Mission Impossible movie. The stars did not align on this one.

Doing this rewatch has definitely helped me appreciate these films even more, especially Rogue Nation. This is a 6 film series with only one truly bad entry. Is it possible that these films, with as good as they are, and how much money they've made, be underrated?

M:I 2 is almost like an multiverse episode when you watch it now. Just a completely different character and set of circumstances than the rest of the films.

This. I actually like M:I2 and all of its ridiculousness. Yes, it is the "worst" of the franchise, but it's still fun to me even if it doesn't really fit with the rest. And that also speaks to how good the rest of the franchise is.

I think the story of M:I 2 is fine, it's the direction and dialogue that are terrible. After Fallout, I was kind of hoping they'd bring Thandie Newton back as a villain in 7 or 8. I think that could be an interesting story option, although it would make M:I 2 required viewing to catch up, and maybe Cruise and co. want to avoid that haha.

MI2 is the only one I can't watch.
It's just not a good movie, particularly in that universe. It's like John Woo tried to turn the franchise into Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.
It's got a 6.1 on IMDB even today despite all the series fanboys chiming in over the years. That's lower than a lot of Hallmark movies.
