Following up on this after finally watching it last weekend.
It wasn't awful, but I kept waiting for the payoff...and then it ended.
Interesting note, apparently the original script had one of the brothers getting killed off and after reading it Affleck suggested the change. Definitely made for a better story.
that's a good way to describe it.
What's frustrating is that I don't think it would've taken much to make it more fun and interesting. Here are a few thoughts on how this could have been better (some of which are admittedly drawn on thoughts on this thread or that I've heard or read elsewhere):
First, replace Garrett Hedlund with Ben Foster and make him a guy that has no real history with any of the other guys, just his brother. He's going to be the loose-cannon, wild card who is always a threat to either do something stupid or turn on the rest of the team.
Second, there were too many instances of different guys on the team doing stupid, uncharacteristic stuff that a well-disciplined team would not have done. Show me more scenes like the recon work and the way they "hunted" the guards and "called their kills". Make us think they're a well-trained, disciplined team.
Third, don't kill the drug cartel leader at the house. Have him escape by shooting and killing Hunman's character. Then, Oscar Isaac's character convinces the team to deviate from the plan in order to track the cartel guy down. That would make it less frustrating if they were deviating from the plan for a noble cause (either revenge or that this guy has to be stopped) and not just for greed.
The delays eventually cause the team to miss the rendezvous with the chopper, as opposed to an experienced pilot crashing because he ignored the same physics he very clearly understood an hour earlier.
So in addition to the survival aspect, you could have some actual internal tension with the Foster character. He's pissed that his brother got killed and blames the other guys.
Ultimately, I just didn't care much about these guys who were in a bad situation because they were greedy.
