That said, as I mentioned in the 2019 release thread, this actually looks pretty good. Like, really good, to the point where I've watched the trailer three times now and find myself legit looking forward to the movie itself.
This is correct. It's crazy they waited this long for a blockbuster movie.
They've released 21 movies. The first one did 163 M in the box office back in '98. They did significantly less each time and not only release them in very very limited showings. There is one coming out in a few weeks.

What makes it a blockbuster? The sales? The names? This is the first live action. This is clearly the biggest budget and Reynolds is a huge name. Maybe you're right.

Big budget with big star power. The only "blockbuster " criteria" this movie doesn't seem to check off is that it's coming out in February and not in the Summer (but we've seen how that is becoming less relevant to box office revenue).
The fact that there's never been a thread on Texags about these movies is probably a good indication that they're not blockbusters.
Oh the cartoon movies? Yea, those weren't. I saw the first couple in theatres as a kid. Idk why it took so long for them to make a live action Pokmon movie tho.

Even, better...I'm pretty sure I've seen EVERY SINGLE MOVIE on that list (with the exception of the later pokemon ones).
Still think Silent Hill wasn't that bad tho.

Final Fantasy is the best video game movie I've seen. Prince of Persia was decent to.
I think all of the following were decent to good video game movies:
Mortal Kombat (Yeah it's cheesy, but damn was it cool in 95.)
Resident Evil (I happened to be the right age for it and was huge into the series at the time.)
Tomb Raider (The one which came out this year. It's certainly not a great movie, but it's not bad either.)
Goldeneye

haha yea, video games based on movies is a different topic (007 and Star Wars related).
I feel like Resident Evil (the first one) was really good but also kind of cheating because at its core...it was a zombie movie. Pretty straight forward film premise; the video game has more lore and complexity but the movie itself really stripped it down and made it a futuristic 'haunted house'....but with zombies.

My favorite game of all time, but I'm not sure a studio would have a big enough budget for a video game movie to do it right.
it doesn't really count but the recent jumanji movie was actually really clever at using video game elements in its story.

This just seems like a fun popcorn flick with your family.
I see no Team Rocket in those trailers.
My prediction, Pikachu is the kids dad and there is some technology/pokemon that is turning humans into pokemon.
