So will we get Giovanni with his Persian? Meowth and Jesse/James? Or is this a standalone/not on the ketchum timeline since there is no Ash in the previews either?

This is not based on the main games or the anime.

So does this count as the first positive reviewed video game movie? I know Pokemon started as a video game, but there have been so many shows, toys and games that I'm not sure if it is really considered a video game franchise anymore.

I believe Lara Croft (new one,) Prince of Persia, Rampage, and Silent Hill have mostly positive reviews.

Not sure about RT scores but they weren't terrible.

I was going off of RT scores. None have been certified fresh.

I would say so. This is based on a specific Pokmon game called detective Pikachu.

I thought it was pretty good. The big thing was it was accessible for people who might not have been too familiar with the source material, which is the big problem most video game moves run into besides being complete *****

Out of those, Rampage was the best. It was nothing more than a fun, cheesy monster movie and the people that made it were very, very aware of the fact.

Solid 8/10. The Pokmon was fan-freaking-tastic. Plot is very generic /meh. If you're a fan of Pokmon, I would definitely recommend watching just for the world building.

Haven't seen it yet but I would love to see more films made in this world.

I don't know. I didn't think they did a good job of explaining the world of Pokemon. My wife knows nothing about Pokemon, and she had a lot of trouble following along. My kids, who can give detailed explanation of every Pokemon, absolutely loved the movie. In fact every kid in the theater was going nuts. If you are into Pokemon, this movie will be great for you.

Taking my three kids tomorrow to give my wife some time off on mother's day. I know very little about Pokmon, we'll see how it goes!

Saw it today. Decent enough flick. The world they showed on the screen really captures Pokmon of the last 20+ years. For me, that was the best part. There was a ton of Easter eggs for Pokmon fans and some pop culture stuff too (Seinfeld, Home Alone, etc). I would think someone new to the world would miss a bunch but not enough to really confuse.

The oldest loves Pokemon (thanks to a stupid kid in his class). Is it appropriate for a 6yo?

Yeah, I took my four year old. It was fine, I think one bad word in the thing.

I thought it was fine 7/10. They did a decent enough job world building without outright explaining what Pokmon were.

I took my 9yo and his 8yo best friend, and they really liked it.

Was into Pokemon a bunch as a kid (late 90's)... Then grew out of it. The world was really interesting and cool. But I wish the movie had been just a tad more complex and adult oriented. Just a bit too kid-oriented for me. Not a bad movie. I'd see another set in the universe. But it could have been a lot better.

Snake? Snaaaaaaaaaaaaaaake?!!

But seriously, I took my kids on Saturday and it was a lot of fun. The plot isn't going to win any Oscars, and neither are the performances, but it was almost worth it just to see the realistic renderings of the pokes. All in all, a fun ride and definitely at the top of any list of video game adaptations. (NOTE: This is the dad review, if you didn't grow up with pokemon or don't have kids... eh, maybe catch it streaming.)

It was a ton of fun. We have really arrived in film making where we can emote CGI better than actors. If you suspend disbelief of a talking animal, you can step into this film and enjoy it.

I was seriously hoping after the credits it goes black and we had the Ryan Reynolds (pikachu) and Bradley Cooper (rocket) talking. The world would absolutely explode.

We enjoyed it. Wife just wanted to go because it was Ryan Reynolds as a yellow mouse. I was pretty darn impressed with the animation and creating the pokemon. I would have killed for it as a kid. Granted, I only played the 1st two generations of the games so I was a bit behind on all the newer pokemon

Saw it this afternoon with my kids. I went in thinking it would be a miserable 104 minutes, but it turned out to be pretty enjoyable. Pokemon was after my time, so I don't know much about them other than what I pick up from my kids playing.

Saw this this weekend. It was surprisingly good. I liked the twist at the end, and I didn't see it coming for a long time.

On another note, I tried to explain to my kids how awesome it would be to have a Bloodsport/Lionheart Jean Claude Van Damm movie but with pokemon battling the whole time. They didn't get the idea at first, but then they realized I just meant a fighting tournament where the viewers are invested in one character. They thought that would make a lot of money but would be rated pg-13.
