Okay, I think here's where we're different in our opinions. I don't see the activities of the supernatural, i.e. ghosts, as time traveling. Ghost don't live in the real world, they live in the afterlife where there is no "time". (Lol, I almost feel like I should be high to be having this conversation).

Regarding the show, it wasn't like future real life version of Nell was traveling back in time to warn her young self that she was in danger, it was her ghost haunting her throughout her life....eh, the more I talk it out, it's such a fine line. I see you're viewpoint, but I view it as "supernatural/otherworldly" rather than "time travel". Does that make sense?

Didn't the others not see bent neck lady? Perhaps only Nell saw her because she could see her future ghost as a premonition.

Also, why was Nell haunting herself? Pretty crappy of herself.

I guess it was beyond her control.

how did the dad die at the end? Yeah Steve sees his body sitting there but how? Did he OD on his "heart medication?" Thought that was strange and also how we don't see how the family reacts.

So are we to believe there are both good and bad parts of the house? Or is the mom, Nellie, and Hugh also now living in a hell of sorts for eternity?

I took it as yes, he OD'd on the heart pill to free the children. His death in the house was what he promised the wife ghost to open the door and let their kids out. He'd been "holding the door closed" his whole life to try to keep the kids away from the house and then had to give his life to the house to "open the door" for them to get out. I think the kids understood what he did because they know the mother ghost didn't want to let them out of the room.

As to why the mother wanted to keep them in the house and Nellie wanted to free them for the house I don't understand.

Much of that I think the show could have fleshed out a bit more -- overall the mother was going a little bit crazy in the house, and not only was she seeing visions of what would happen to her kids "out in the real world", but she was also experiencing this overwhelming feeling of them being taken away from her (which is not much unlike what i assume many mothers go through)... Scenes like her drifting to sleep with the children in her arms only to wake up and look down and one of them was gone (the father had taken him)... It all led up to the screeming-meemies-mother-ghost beating her down with thoughts of what was going to happen to them out the real world when it sinks it's teeth into them, and ultimately whispering to her a way that she can keep them safe and with her (killing them).

I dont think she was haunting herself. I think those were her memories. I also think that she could see herself because they are a family that's more in tune with the other side. Like I dont think the tall man was malicious when he went to look at Luke under the bed, I think he was curious. (Chasing birds) anyways. I think she was going through memories, I dont see a ghost desiring to haunt themself, or maybe it was the evil house causing her to haunt herself.

I dont think the whole house was evil. I think there are good and bad in all things. The bad dominated that house. But it wasnt just the house. It was the secrets. I fully believe that the mom, Hugh and Nell will be happy together forever there. That's why it was a white light when he walked into the red room.

I really enjoyed this series. We are starting Sabrina today. I love Netflix and this season.

Yeah I agree with the thought that the whole house wasn't evil just haunted, and some of the spirits there were malicious (like the insane screeming meme's chick).

And I don't think the father Hugh had to die in order to set the children free. I don't think that's what he meant by holding the door back. I think what he meant was metaphorically keeping the evil away from the children (or vice versa) by sheltering them their whole lives from what really happened when they lived in that house and what's really going on in that house.

In his mind he had been protecting them their whole lives by hiding the truth from them (keeping the evil at bay by "holding the door to it shut"), but then he realized that by keeping them at a distance from the truth they had not been able to truly heal and be a family unit.

I don't think some of the things said in the show are as literal as some of you were taking it.

What about that creepy poem the crazy lady recited about all the people she killed in the house? I can't find the poem online, but man that gave me chills. Would like to read that since I was freaked out listening to it.
Lex

It basically explained the other spirits we've seen. It creeped me out. She was my least favorite character.

Also one question I had..

How did all the kids have their hallucination of their "red rooms"? As in how did they actually get in the room? Did it look different to them from the outside? Did the black out when they went there? Really confused by that.
Joe Exotic
How long do you want to ignore this user?
That was on my mind too, especially the tree house. How does one get duped into walking into a fake treehouse inside of a house?
Lex
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The Red Room serves as "the stomach" of the living entity that is Hill House, and had lured each member of the family inside, by appearing as something different to each of them. To Luke it was a treehouse; to Theo a dance studio; to Shirley a living room; to Olivia a reading room, etc. Each family member thought they were in a place of comfort, but were unknowingly being "digested" by the house. It was learning them.
FTAC2011
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I get the inside of the room, my question is more geared towards how did they all end up there... in their "safe place"? They had to walk to the room somehow. Were they hallucinating their whole walk to the room? And then did the ghosts open the door for them?
Lex
How long do you want to ignore this user?
It was disguised. I think that's the scariest part to me. How could you think your outside In a treehouse? What door was your dance studio? I get that it is a giant house. As we saw in one scene Liv's library was close to the bedrooms. How they got into it isnt a for sure. I think that's the house being evil again. I'd have to assume Poppy was a bigger part of the how they got there. Also. When it was Theos dance room the red door was a brown closet door, remember? In an article I read before I watched it. It said if theres anything red in the room(read bean bag, table, lamp) then you are in the red room and dont know it. I dont think that explains anything. I think that's one of the points. Its gonna leave you with lots of questions.

Phenomenal show.

I don't know how they do another season with the same family, and no idea how they do it with another family and the same house. So would they have to change the name of the show if they did a second season?

Are there plans for a second season? I don't know how they could...
Hey...so.. um
How long do you want to ignore this user?
The director of the show said the crane family story was finished, but alluded to potentially similar or related "2nd" season. I'll try to find the link.
Edit:
https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.businessinsider.com/netflixs-the-haunting-of-hill-house-director-talks-season-2-2018-10

Can someone help me with the link, on my cell phone.

Second edit. I guess texags figured out the link without forum code on mobile app. Thanks.

I believe they went to live with the aunt because Hugh was a suspect in the death of the mom. They didnt fully explain it but that was my way of filling in the gaps.

Upon rewatching I realized the meeting with the lawyer in the first episode was about a custody hearing, not a murder case. I'm guessing he lost custody to Aunt Janet.

Possibly a prior family? There are enough ghosts in that house. They could just do each season focusing on a different family.

There's definitely material for a prequel.

I said it earlier in thread. They made a point of showing he had written other books about hauntings. I think they go the direction of American Horror Story and just have a different story and cast each time.

Theres so many ways to go. I think it's cool to think of a season 2 and what could be. I would want same cast plus new people. Kids that go in on a dare or something and the ghosts like Poppy stick with them. And the kids are like,"not again!"

The problem with new storylines is new actors. The problem with new actors is a large percentage of child actors cant act for *****

Part of what made this show great was the kids were great.

Honestly not sure I want a second season. Sometimes you just have to leave well enough alone, especially when it's this good. The first season was fantastic and ended perfectly, with no loose ends. Trying to shoehorn in a second season just so you can have a second season is usually not a good idea.

I think one of the books mentioned Alcatraz... don't always need kids for a Haunting story.

Interestingly, the creator/director Mike Flanagan is married to the actor that plays Theo - Kate Siegel.

Episode 5 will eff you up. Just finished the season, actually liked how they wrapped it up but they could have gone a totally different direction. However, that would have been more like current horror flicks.

Yeah, I can't recall ever seeing something go from so sweet to sinister in one hour like the The Bent-Neck Lady episode. Hand the creators all the hardware, best television I've seen all year!
