I saw Frozen 2 a couple weeks ago at an AMC for a showtime of 7pm. From 7:00-7:07 all it was were commercials before they started the trailers. Like actual commercials from TV or something. It had Prudential, Geico, Ford, Coke, and just other random commercials. It got so bad that I thought there must have been some mixup and was about to go grab an employee to tell them something messed up. That was the first time I've ever seen commercials at a movie theatre after the listed showtime. (besides the concessions and trailers).

I hope this isn't going to be a new norm, but I guess it was only a matter of time. It's easy targeted marketing when you know the target audience of certain movies.

At Drafthouse today we had:

Bad Boys for Life
Black Widow
Free Guy
1917
Mulan
A Quiet Place (30 seconds)

I think that was it. Went by quickly.

Hated TLJ. Really enjoyed this one. Sure, it was a little clunky at times, but overall really strong. And LOL at the critics assessments of each of the last 2 movies. So many of those fools have no ****ing clue.

Cinemark. We had the Cadillac commercial as well which was a tease. Made me think the trailers were over but NOPE two more after that.

Saw it at Cinemark. 35 minutes of trailers and commercials (cadillac and sprite). Showtime 12:35. Movie started 1:10. Ridiculous

I'm kind of floored to see these reports of so many trailers.

We had Mulan, Onward, Black Widow, and one other. Showtime was 7:00. They start commercials about 6:50. Previews at show time. No commercials inserted in the trailers.

It's Shulman Theaters though. I did not know this until last night, guess I never paid attention. Shulman is completely family owned and operated and started in Bryan, TX in 1926.

I have never seen so much b*tching about having to watch movie trailers, of all things. Give me *all* the movie trailers, please. There are few things better than seeing a bunch of big-name trailers, in a theater, with an amped audience on opening weekend. Besides, this is one of the biggest event movies of the year. Of course theaters are going to use this opportunity to advertise as much of their product as possible to packed house after packed house.

Tc this isn't just Star Wars. I saw black Christmas the day before and it was 30 minutes of trailers at regal

With reserved seating and bar service now available at nicer theatres, trailer time allows one to finish one's cocktail in a leisurely, civilized manner. Y'all are doing it wrong.

Brilliant. Just brilliant. Great way to end it and they totally vanquished Rian Johnson's ****show.

Oh, no, you have to hear people express joy and enthusiasm for movies? What a bunch of assh*les. What's next, people saying how much they like food at restaurants??? Ugh.

No no no no no. There is a difference in someone who quitely informs their friends or whoever they came with to the movies about their desire to see a movie and that certain type of person who wants EVERYONE around them to know. They have to make sure that the second the trailer starts, they already know what movie it is, and like Redstone, they want everyone to know that they already know because of how up to date on future movies they are.

This usually is a precursor to the fact that the same person will be making dumb comments throughout the movie such as pointing out subtle jokes and cues throughout the movie.

Aside from big movies like this on IMAX, I'm swearing off the theater experience for good. These damn people just talk all through movies nowadays, no matter what theater, no matter what movie. It's a nightmare.

Saw it with a group of five friends at the Alamo Drafthouse today and we all had a great time. It's not going to win any awards, but it is fun!

I loathed TLJ and loved TFA.
Thanks and gig'em

I live in Houston. I've tried theaters in town, I've tried theaters out in the burbs. It's a plague of talkers.
Last movie I went to was Ford vs Ferrari in a mostly empty theater, and a the guy of the couple that sits right behind us explains every frigging thing to his girl. "oh yeah, that parts true" "ya, that was the car they made" blah blah blah.

I've asked people to be quiet before but they look at me like I'm from mars. It's like all people are used to just talking about movies while watching them at home, so they just do it at the theater too, and can't see why anyone would be opposed to it.

I hear you on that. Genuine enthusiasm in theaters I love, but talkers I hate. I'd say one out of every three or so movies I see I have to ask someone to either please be quiet or turn off their damn phone.

1.5 hours left. Dinner and then the movie. I'm ready. Hope I'm not one of the negative Nancy's after. I expect to be pleased. My memories of this franchise go back to 1982. It's just a movie, but it's also more than that.

Let's do this.

The nice part about the theaters with the recliners is the wall behind you blocks out most of the sound from anyone behind. The negative is it also directly blocks rear channel audio if the wall is between the line of sight to the speaker.

Who knows if I'm going to end up agreeing with him or not, but I love Joseph Kahn. He's a huge music video director (seriously, check his credits) from Texas whose last couple of films have been getting a decent amount of praise. He gets sh*t online for sometimes going against the grain (like he is now), but he doesn't give a f*ck. I met him once, and have seen him out a couple other times, and he comes across as a super nice/good dude.

I agree with him. Basically erased TLJ and assembled a good movie. Imperfect but very good. Wish there was a do-over of TLJ because what a complete ****ing waste that could have been a fantastic build to an amazing reveal. But I'm happy with how JJ cleaned up Rian Johnson's pants-****ting

Really hard for you to comprehend that not everyone goes to watch the trailers in order to inform the world via social media whether they are hyped to see a movie or if they think it will be terrible based on the trailer alone? Nobody cares dude, nobody cares.

Some people have other things going on in their lives besides having 7 cinematic orgasms a week. They have to make plans with family, friends, etc, and take time out their regular daily routine to drive 20-30 minutes or more to the cineplex, since we don't have neighborhood movie theaters out here in the hinterlands of flyover country. So yes, 30 minutes of commercials that change the start time and expected leave time do make a difference. Stop school-marming the board every time someone shows insufficient gratitude for whatever experience you yourself are personally having.

School-marming? I'm simply laughing at the fact that you and others are coming across as being legit angry about having to watch movie trailers. It's funny to me, that's all. I get that it can be a time suck, but don't make this some bullsh*t thing about you being so incredibly busy, while hinting that I have nothing else going on in my life. This is literally my job, and this is an entertainment message board, so spare me the backhanded digs.

Surely you can understand that 35 minutes with commericals baked into it could be considered excessive by a reasonable person. Especially considering a 2:20 movie is to follow.

Holy crap! We just had a Star Wars themed mariachi band play 5 minutes of Star Wars music in our theatre! It was great!

Yeah, of course. But I also understand theaters needing to make money, and thus a ton of advertising on a weekend like this. It's the price we have to pay for more and more people staying home. That said, I'm in one hundred percent agreement that theaters should at least post how long the trailers are going to be, or factor that into the runtime somehow.

Agree 100% with that. When we buy game tickets or whatever, we know there will be stuff before first pitch, but 7:05 means 7:05. I just remember thinking trailers would be like 10 minutes or something. I may be imagining this, but I think I remember when there were like 2 big trailers before a movie.

That's where if you hear them do it on the first trailer, YOU outdo them on the next one really obnoxiously. Fight fire with fire.

You seem pretty angry too. Trailers have been pretty ridiculous on new releases for more than a few years. You can see when the next showing is for your theater, math isn't hard.
You aren't wrong that trailers have gotten excessive, I agree with you there. Your reasoning is just that you didn't think ahead, and it's the theaters fault for trying to make enough money to keep existing.
DannyDuberstein
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Well, they need to be careful about going the hoar on dollar night route. The whole penny wise, pound foolish thing. If fewer people coming to the theater because they prefer the home experience is a concern, then making the theater experience more frustrating for some seems... unwise.
