Is the book written in first person?

Yes. I'm reading the book right now and am basically caught up with the show. It's a good read.

Music isn't a major theme in the book like it appears to be in the show.

I was wondering if that was the case because the show seems kind of in first person (in as much as video can be 'first person'.) We only see scenes that main character is in, and then we see her have memories of other things in the moment. Her memory cuts in and out of the present which is interesting. Just something I noticed last week so I figured the book was probably written that way.

To TCTTS' complaint about this show, this might be the reason for that. We may be seeing the other characters through the eyes of our main character, who's drunk like 70% of the time.

I'm no English major or anything, but I can see that music may be a much less emotive device in literature than film...

I'm kind of on the fence with this show. Waiting for it to go full on true detective. I'll stick with it for a few more weeks.

Well, I was an English major....and I agree. Sound techiques don't carry the same punch in books. I only mentioned it because music seems to be a major part of the story development for the show - enough that it was a noticeable difference when I got into the book.

If the show follows the pacing of the book, the second half should have a little more oomph

Worst episode of the series IMO. Way too slow with little development.

WTF did I just watch? I kinda assumed Emma was friends with or knew the girls......and that was the big revealing of this episode? And who the hell passes out in a ditch 20 feet in front of their car?

Amma is so creepy I would swear she is the murderer except she is physically incapable.

I had the same question, then realized she was out of the car looking for the phone she tossed out the night before right before slamming on the brakes.

I actually like this episode.
They finally are trying to bring color to the family a bit. It's now clear that she is holding something important back, and you have the questions around the sister, the question of what happened in the shack, still what actually happened to her dead sister...the pig farm etc...I thought it's set up really well for the rest of the year,

I think the "physically incapable" part is misdirection.

So last week I mentioned on here that I thought the book might have been in first person because the show is kind of shot that way in the sense that I don't think we'd seen any scenes that didn't directly involve the main character, but that definitely wasn't the case last night so now I'm rethinking everything.

Was last night the first time we had scenes (the detective waking up, the sheriff guy getting ready/kissing his wife goodbye, the scenes with the mom and the sheriff together, etc) that the main character wasn't in or was I remembering the first several episodes wrong?

The detective and sheriff have had quite a few scenes together where they were alone. I think the mother and stepfather have too.

I was trying to think of the mother and stepfather ones and I thought Camille came in at the beginning or end of any of those scenes, but now that you said that you're right about the sheriff and the detective.

Meh. A million better ways to spend two hours.

I actually thought it was a pretty good episode. I feel like it's starting to pick up[ a bit. I don't feel like it's one specific killer.

My theory is that it's really the doing of some sort of secret society of all these old money folks in town. Very Bohemian Grove, child sacrifice and what not. The sheriff and the parents are definitely in on it and the little sister recruits the victims.

Went ahead and caught up anyway.

So far the best thing this show has going for it is that it's weird and has stayed weird. Hoping for a pickup in pace with the main plot of the dead girls very soon.

Yea I guess it's weird enough to keep me mildly interested and watching week to week. But I'm not enjoying it.

Watching Succession is awesome and I look forward to it each week. This feels like a chore that I'm hoping pays off at some point.

Adora and Amma are so effin weird that it's just annoying me at this point. I didn't watch this episode until last night. I watched Succession right away on Sunday. This one Is quickly slipping down the priority list.
Bunk Moreland
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Yeah that's where I'm at too. I have this feeling everything will just stay weird and then it'll have some super basic resolution that makes us wonder what the entire season was all for.

Agreed and this commentary reminds me of the Killing on AMC and that show had a very unsatisfying basic ending. At least this is a one time limited series without a season 2.

i said it earlier on the thread but I predicted it would (or hoped it wouldn't) end up being like The Night Of.

HBO miniseries that started great and odd in the first ep and then every single episode just got more bland and didn't really do anything other than stay pretty straight forward once it was all done.
OldArmy71

The Night Of is MUCH better than this.

While watching this show, I keep thinking of George Carlin calling out "spoooooky language" in his 10 Commandments bit. It's relying heavily on the eerie without a lot of substance.

Probably one of the most entertaining pilots I've seen in a long time. Wife and I binged the first four episodes really quickly. Beautifully shot, the music is fantastic - it's a mind ****

A little disappointed in tonight's episode. I'm thinking the sister is getting one of the factory workers to kill the girls for her. I was hoping we could get some more details on that damn shack but nothing.

So what's up with the cheerleader that cleaned up the blood under the couch? Why was it so important to get her story published?
NASAg03
How long do you want to ignore this user?
i think it's the cheerleader. she's the outsider. jealous of the sister.

can't figure out how the shack is involved. there's a big clue there.

Entering the acting teacher as an official subject, especially after the look his wife gave when he was looking at Amma
