Anyone watching this? I liked the first episode. Lots of mystery to uncover and characters to develop. Plenty of confusion too.

I liked it. Has a True Detective (season 1!) vibe so far. Interested to see where it goes!

Very TD Season 1 vibe.

Maybe even more creepier than True Detective?

I generally liked it, just like almost everything AA is in. But the family scenes were over the top weird -kind of killed some of the vibe. The half sister felt like she belonged in the shining and the mom was overly robotic (and I Usually love Patricia Clarkson).

Will watch more though and see where it goes.

I haven't read the book so I'm intrigued where it is going. I was also hooked when I found there are hidden words throughout the episode. I love stuff like that and have watched it twice looking for the words.

Intriguing first episode. I have a feeling it'll be predictable at some point, much like Big Little Lies (same director). We shall see...

Pretty good pilot.

You mention hidden words and the only one I noticed was her arm at the end. Was that "hidden" or a scar?

Book was very predictable. Very much unlike gone girl.

You are!

Yeah I noticed a few of the ones as they happened but missed a couple too.

Interesting start. I was impressed with all the Zepp music, they must have a good budget.

What is and what should never be was played a few times along with the other one I am blanking on right now, but that song is about Plants relationship with his wife's sister.

Who knows if there is a thematic tie in there or not at this point (at least for us non book readers).

I watched it yesterday and also thought of True Detective 1. I hope it stays interesting.

the vibe I got was a cross between True Detective and The Night Of.

In that, it feels like True Detective, but will probably disappoint us and finish very bland like The Night Of.

Finally had a chance to watch the pilot and I agree about the family scenes. They feel like they're almost part of a different show. And ok, that was her half sister? I had the volume up louder than usual and I still couldn't understand half the dialogue. This was either the most mumbly show ever or just a terrible sound mix on HBO's part. At first I thought she was Amy Adams' niece, but then they showed her sister dying young. Her step dad was in that funeral scene as well, so he was already in the picture, but then Patricia Clarkson and him had the step sister a few years later? Seems a little old to be having another kid, but whatever. I guess it checks out. Final question... the step sister wasn't also one of the girls on skates that Amy Adams ran into a couple times, was she? I thought she said something about not recognizing her in town, but again, I couldn't understand a damn thing coming out of anyone's mouth.

That said, everything else was pretty great. I loved the dreamy vibe, I dig that small town setting, and it's shaping up to be a nice little murder mystery. As previously mentioned, great music as well, same as Big Little Lies. Overall, this feels like it's going to be a cool summer show, as long as everyone speaks up. [/old man rant]

The half-sister was with the skating crew. She even said she thought it was her (Amy Adams) that first time when she got to town.

As with most shows these days, especially HBO shows, I highly recommend watching with closed captioning turned on. I didn't have the problems understanding the audio you did but the CC definitely helped me catch everything I may have missed the first time.

Perhaps I need to turn up the brightness on my iPad as well. I could barely see that she had cut the word vanity (I think) into her arm. My wife said there are more words she's cut into her skin that could be seen when she was in the tub but I didn't see them.

That's the one thing that was actually pretty clear on my end. She didn't just have "more" words cut into her skin... nearly every inch of her skin was covered in words. Pretty disturbing.

wait - they showed that already? I thought that was revealed late in the book?

Family (and most characters) seem unrealistically nutso. And instead of having a "Night Of" where they blew their load in 2-3 episodes and then struggled, it seems they are going with the opposite approach of taking things soooo slooooow.

episode 2 reveals a lot more. damn the old mom is crazy. so many teaser phrases making this way more complex.

spoilers...

so the mom is the woman in white trying to "save" natalie?

I'm still waiting for them to explain the torture porn in the shack as well. maybe Camelle was molested there?

On one hand, I appreciate the pulpy nature of it all. It's certainly cool and creepy and unique. But on the other hand, after two episodes, none of these characters feel like real people who do real things or have real relationships or live in a real town. It's all just a little too off and weird and on the nose. I'm certainly intrigued and definitely going to stick with it, though. Maybe it just takes some getting used to.

As for the mom being the woman in white, that's interesting. Also of note, the meth mom with cancer was dressed in white and, according to the detective, slaughters pigs (I think that's what he said)... which tells me she might have the strength (or skill) to pull teeth. But who knows. Probably a misdirection or a little too random.

They were definitely not at all scared. And one of them did make that "unpopular" comment about the victims. Still, that would probably feel a little too Scream for me... multiple high schoolers dressing up as a single serial murderer, killing off other teens...

Also, in 2018, why the hell does no in this town have air conditioning?

I also noticed that everyone is constantly covered in sweat but yet Amy Adams is always wearing jeans, hills and a jacket/long sleeve and never sweating.

I think the step dad is involved. He is way to quiet

I feel like there is something to the stepdad always listening to music. Like he has tuned out the problems.

HBO has me programmed to search for crazy ***** About halfway through last night's episode, I had convinced myself that Jackie (Elizabeth Perkins' character) was a halucination Camille only sees while she's drinking (in the forest in Ep. 1 and at the funeral and reception in Ep. 2)....then Camille mentioned Jackie to another character.

Well I wonder if Jackie is the woman in white. Probably not but she seems to hang around and be entertained by the stuff happening.
