Shrek/Madagascar/insertrandomDreamworksfilmhere probably has higher viewership than a lot of Disney movies now b/c of copyrights. My wife used to teach elementary, and they were not allowed to show any disney movies, b/c Disney required the school to buy a license b/c it wasn't for private home viewing. Dreamworks didn't GAF, so that's what they rolled with.

this is confirming my opinion on the wizard of oz given the bias inherent in this population sample.

But, how many 25 and under have seen Oz? That one is going down by the day even if top 3 now.

Agreed. Whatever it gains in the 40+ crowd is cancelled out by the < 20 crowd.

but the young aren't replacing the old. Not enough of em.

And I would still say many have seen it. Hell. My nieces school did a play on it with the 3 witch sisters. Not just the 2.

I'd be willing to bet that more than 50% of people under 18 haven't seen Wizard of Oz.

My point is that this poll skews heavily toward that end of the demographic and it's solidly in number 2

I would think there's more 60+ people on this board than teenagers.

Almost no one on my team at work (almost all of whom are under 30) has seen Star Wars.

It blows my mind.

I feel like all kids run through the Disney library growing up even if it came out before they were born.

First time we took my oldest to Disneyworld he was about seven. He was trying to tell us where something was and pointed and said; "over there by that white duck." He had no idea who Donald Duck was. Gave us a chuckle.

Interesting trend of only 2 of the 15 movies (Iron Man and Finding Nemo) being from 2000 or later. And 5 of the top 6 movies came out 1990-95 (not surprising given the age of posters here).

So in 25 years, which of these will still be the most relevant like the Wizard of Oz?
-Forrest Gump
-The Lion King
-Jurassic Park
-Toy Story
-Home Alone

Going off the Christmas theme - that claymation Rudolph the Rednose Reindeer movie. Anyone with kids or grandkids has watched that at some point.

I had assumed the Lion King would win the original "most widely viewed" contest, so I'll stick with it.

One thing I can't decide is if the new Jurassic World/Toy Story sequels and Lion King remake help or hurt their chances.

Will more people watch the originals because of the newer version? Or do they just replace them for the next generation?

I disagree. Seems like a broad stroke of the brush there.

I would think it would only help them and bring new younger viewers to see the originals

Worth mentioning Toy Story Land is opening this year in all the Disney theme parks.

That is not going anywhere.

You're definitely right about the sequels helping originals. I never would have seen Star Wars (we were an Indiana Jones family) if my wife's family didn't watch it prepping for the sequels.

I'll be very curious to see the long term effect of Disney's live action remakes on the legacy of their original classics in 25-30 years. When Beauty & the Beast or The Lion King are mentioned, which one will people think of? Disney doesn't care because they are money printing machines either way. I know movies have been remade frequently throughout the history of cinema, but not in a specific effort like this to my knowledge.
