How did the Nazis have time to sew a custom-fitted cover for the Ark of the Covenant during the sail to the island?

The dimensions of the ark are known from Hebrew texts, right?

sewn by the angels that watched over it.

It really seems like there had to be some female involvement. Someone like my mother would say, "This really needs a dust cover."

Also, I just read that the place in the above photo was the same (filming) location where R2 was captured by the Jawas.

My favorite movie. Simply put, this is why cinema was invented by Edison and the Lumiere brothers was for films like Raiders of the Lost Ark.

I kind of agree. Raiders shaped a lot of my youth and how I measured films. Everything that's right with it highlights everything that's wrong with Crystal Skull.

I google random things and the other day I googled "movies where the villain was right".*

So RotLA was on this list and it mentioned Jones did more harm than good in this film since the ark would have ended up on that island by itself after belloq opened it. Maybe even the nazis close by would have taken it back to germany so hitler could open it and would have been melted/exploded too. So yeah...thanks dr. jones.

*I'm still not sure how this played into the whole "villain was right" deal.

At any rate it doesn't take a woman that long to sew a cover.

yeah until you realize that nothing would be any different if Indy had done nothing. he could have waited until the end and still gotten the ark.

The Nazi's still find the ark eventually and maybe even quicker remember Indy delayed them because he hid the medallion from them, they still take it to the island or maybe Berlin instead open it, die. And if he wasn't involved to begin with then Marian isn't put in harm's way and almost killed.

Only after the ark is opened does Indy contribute (other than perhap delaying the inevitable) by the somehow (we are not shown how) getting the ark back off the German island military base with only a nazi sub at his disposal, and back to a warehouse in the US for safekeeping.

Don't get me wrong I love the movie and it's more of the journey then the logic behind any of it. Of course Indy had no way of knowing that would transpire that way but it is kinda funny in retrospect.

Do the Nazis even find the Ark without Indy? He was the only one with the double sided medallion that gave the correct length of the staff to use in the map room.

I probably saw this 5-7 times in the movie theater. The perfect movie.

i love raiders of the lost ark, but i think you can actually make the argument that Indy's involvement in Raiders actually makes the world a worse place.

think about it...if Indy doesn't show up to save Marion from the Nazi's, there's a reasonably good chance that she gets tortured and/or killed for the medallion.

if Indy and Marion don't reconcile, the world is spared Shia's character.

Yeah, I don't know what you guys are talking about. Indiana Jones is a trilogy. I'm still waiting for Spielberg to make th fourth one. Hopefully it's good. And doesn't have flying monkeys. Or mole hills. Or Shia.

All joking aside, I actually do kind of dig the nuke the fridge scene however. I like it gets a ton of crap, but to me, that's the insane kind stuff that Indy would survive. It's silly, but it fits the character. The rest of the movie can die in a fire though.

With Spielberg working in the fifth movie, I must say I've done a complete 180 on the idea of recasting Indy. He belongs in the 30s. A fifth movie with Ford would have to be in the 60s at this point? Which means we'd get some 60s film homage probably.

Just make it Pratt and let him fight Nazis. Or do the World War II spy movie they hinted at in Crystal Skull

Seems to me that if Indy and Marion don't show up, then Belloq opens the Ark and everyone dies. But the Nazis would have known where the troop movements were and probably sent more to find Belloq and the Ark. So when they show up and find the Ark and the dead bodies, maybe they figure out that the Ark is a kind of doomsday device. Maybe the information makes it way to Himmler who decides to open it at Auschwitz.

So Indy and Marion open their eyes, see what happened, escape where they connect with US/Allied assets and retrieve the Ark before the Nazis can track it down and potentially use it to exterminate the Jews in concentration camps or otherwise turn it into a weapon to win WW2.

There you go. Indy saved the world.

Yeah, I hate that it took them so long to make a 4th installment.

An Indy movie set during WWII working as a spy and artifact collector would have been awesome on so many levels.

So exactly did Indy get off the island with the Ark? Was every single Nazi on the island at the opening of the Ark? Did Indy and Marion load it on the U-boat and pilot it back to a friendly port?

Between this scene and "I know" from Empire Ford had two of the best ad libs ever.

  • When they go to see the translator about the inscription on the headpiece, he says "about 6 feet"
  • Then looking at the other side of the headpiece he then says "But take back one foot"
  • So the staff should be around 5 feet.
  • Indy is well over 6 feet tall, yet his Staff of Ra is a foot or so TALLER than Indy himself.
