Also, that's the VERY LAST panther flower and they want to squander it for another challenge? First of all, That would be cheating and they have all sorts of honor and stuff.

It was an even fight because Killmonger had the powers of the Black Panther as well.

Finally found time to watch this with my kids last night. Good movie and enjoyable, but it fell a little flat with me and not up to its reputation and hype.

Clearly, the novelty of a big budget blockbuster black movie was a large driver of the over-the-top praise. I like the notion of the (almost) all-black cast (although Claw stole every seen he was in and didn't get a worthwhile death) which was necessary for the world-building. And I liked many aspects of the world it built, but also found it to be over-the-top in size, technology, and a mixmatch of dirt floor huts and super-advanced tech which made little sense. And that kind of goes hand in hand with the movie itself, which seemed overstuffed.

The costumes and visuals were really good. I don't think the action scenes, especially the climactic battle, were among the better Marvel action scenes.

The plot was very predictable, and I found the main bad guy's motivations (as well as the angst over killing the uncle in necessary defense of younger Forest Whitaker) to be unconvincing. I also didn't find the rejection of the bad guy's goals by the royal family to be very powerful: "that is not our way" instead of "that's psycho and evil," an appeal to tradition vs morality.

The several drop in SJW lines were mildly off-putting, but not bad enough to be bothersome. The worst was probably in the death scene for killmonger, which wasn't that strong of a death scene IMO. I didn't believe in Killmonger as a soldier, partly because Hollywood keeps delivering these Will Smith (and Harry Connick, from the same movie) type soldiers who act nothing like soldiers.

This was maybe the weakest marvel movie from a humor standpoint as well.

Good movie overall. Definitely a solid marvel movie, Not one of the very best, and definitely hyped beyond its accomplishments as a movie because of its accomplishments as a black movie.

It is if you WANT it to be.

It isn't if you are capable of watching a movie just for entertainment.

Now the question is, how much more does it make? I think it finishes around 650 Domestic, 1.3 Worldwide.

I found it enjoyable, and like past movies, people will find anything they want to find in a film.

That is a long a lot of money.

I expected it to do well. I thought they did a good job.

But these numbers are huge. Even better than the high marks I thought it would hit.

I'm a little confused about the 11 Wakandans that were on an "outreach" mission in Nigeria in Civil War and the news at the beginning of Black Panther saying Wakanda was a 3rd world country. It's like King T'Chaka was already starting to think outside of his borders.

Overall, I thought it was pretty good however I was disappointed in the credits scenes in that they didn't attempt to tie into Infinity War at all. I specifically wonder if the last one with Bucky was to imply he would get some awesome tech (kind of already know that with Cap's new shield from Infinity War trailer) or if there was supposed to be more to pick up on. Maybe it was just to show he wasn't at the main city during the events of Black Panther.

The scene with Bucky was more than just the tech of his arm. It was about getting mental help - they're able to cure him so he can't be controlled anymore.

Saw this last night. Wish I hadn't seen Infinity War first, but the movie was still very entertaining.

I guess we can write-off this franchise since the main star was annihilated in Infinity War.

The movie itself wasn't really. There were a few out of place comments that were dumb (like the villains final comments about his 'ancestors' that had nothing to do with the storyline, and made no sense because they shared the same ancestors)...but for the most part, it's just a cool Marvel movie like many others are.

The reason it got sooooo much hype, certainly had to do with some of that sentiment...but who cares. If you wanna see a Marvel movie...go see it. If you don't like Marvel movies, don't.

Pretty average movie on the whole. My wife and I were perplexed by the hype with this one. I was really pumped about it but completely underwhelmed. Definitely in the lowest tier of the MCU for me and completely forgettable. The only character I liked was the General. Would like to see more of her.

I chuckled during the UN cut scene when he announced Wakanda to the world and they were going to share their culture and wealth. Question by UN guy, "What resources are you going to give us?". Asked with complete desperation just like the real life leeches that they are.

It's a 6-10 range for me. Good, but not spectacular. I'll watch Iron Man, Any of the Cap Movies, Ragnarok and either Avengers movie if I'm bored. I just don't see me wanting to pull up BP.

It's not revolutionary (for me personally at least, but I'm a white guy), but it's definitely in the top tier of Marvel movies for me. Probably at the bottom of that tier, but still very entertaining, well done, and rewatchable.

Watched it last night...was ok. As someone said before, wish I would have caught this before IW.

I like the characters and look of the movie. Coogler is a master of the long take and I love his style.

My biggest problem with the movie, and I'm sure its been mentioned on this thread before, was: off the cliff, lets start a revolution, oh wait nevermind...Man-Ape found him, here is some purple flower...and back to it.

I think a more interesting story would've been to have T'Challa get his ass kicked early on, confront his doubt, reconcile his failures, and discover the heart of what makes T'Challa the Black Panther and not just some purple flower. Kinda what scrawny Steve Rogers did for Captain America. As it stands, T'Challa feels like an unflawed main character...and those tend to be the worst kinds.

My biggest problem with the movie was that he had to cheat his way back into the thrown. I mean, did he not lose fair and square the first time around?

Just rewatched it the other day. Technically, and this was stated in the movie so it's not just my opinion, the challenge for the throne must end in either yielding or death. Since T'challa neither yielded nor died, Killmonger wasn't officially the king yet because the challenge technically wasn't over.

I think perhaps you misinterpreted that question. He prefaced the question by pointing out that Wakanda is (to the knowledge of outsiders) a third world country with impoverished people and no known exports. His question was more along the lines of "if you can't help your own people, what do you think you have to offer the rest of the world?".

Ehhh, a technicality, especially when the real problem with that whole plot point was that all T'challa had to do when Killmonger was brought into the throne room after delivering Klaw's body was simply tell everyone, "Hey, uhhh, this is the dude that broke Klaw out of jail and helped him escape from my grasp earlier."

This movie isn't perfect, isn't deserving of all of the praise heaped upon it, and I didn't even think Killmonger was all that compelling of a villain. But it was still well made (the action scenes with the long scenes in particular) and the actors all did a fantastic job.

My question is (and apologies if it's been asked multiple times already)..... Is it necessary to see this movie before watching Infinity War?

My family is doing extended movie marathon, catching up on all the "essential" Marvel movies before watching Infinity War. This has been over the course of a couple of weeks so far. We've seen Iron Man, Captain America, GotG, Thor, The Avengers, CA: Civil War, and Age of Ultron.

Still planning to see GotG2, Dr. Strange and Thor: Ragnarok.

Just curious if BP is really necessary to see before IW due to important info.

My 9 year old son and I didn't see BP before IW and we were both fine. I think Civil War tell you all you need to know. There are some extra characters in IW that I guess are introduced in BP, but you figure out who they are pretty quickly.

I noted on the BluRay release that it said nothing on the packaging about a digital copy. Are they not including the digital download codes in the BluRay releases any longer?

edit - never mind, I found the release including the code on Amazon. They didn't have any with the code at the WalMart I ventured into this morning.

I would try and watch it, although you'd probably be ok.

If you can't the essential takeaways are:

Wakanda is super advanced with technology, defenses, etc. However, the rest of the world thinks it's a typical third-world African country
T'Challa (Black Panther) is about on Cap's level of abilities
There are some geniuses there (T'Challa's sister)
Bucky is under their care hiding and getting deprogrammed

You definitely need Thor Ragnarok before IW. I'm not a comic book guy, so it helped me to see Dr. Strange because I had never even heard of him before that movie came out. Black Panther isn't completely necessary if youve seen Civil War, but it's still worth watching. (Edit: I second what Sex Panther said above)

Ok thanks for the feedback guys. I'll probably skip BP for now and see it later.

Like I mentioned, we've got 3 left we're going to watch before IW.... GotG2, Dr. Strange and Ragnarok and I do hear Ragnarok is a must watch. Then off to the theaters for IW.

Seeing a lot of these "Do I have to see [X] before I see Infitity War?" questions. I get that people are incredibly busy, as am I, but who has time to post on TexAgs AND go see Infinity War in theaters but doesn't have two hours to knock out Black Panther? I've never seen so much time devoted to wondering if one should take the time to watch a movie.
