For as great of a villain Killmonger was supposed to be and as well as Michael B Jordan played him, I felt like his rise and fall were almost lightning quick. I think they tried to put too much into this one movie...Killmonger could have had a two or three movie arc if they wanted to do him justice. Honestly think they could have built that as part of the post-Infinity War phase and it would have been more compelling.

I saw ot Thursday, and have been ruminating on it. The combat was awesome and i overall thoroughly enjoyed it, but some things were off. For some reason i just didnt care about T'Challa or Killmonger. Killmonger is just a murderous psychopath with dumb vengeful motivations. They focused so strongly about how he was skilled in destroying governments, I wish they had let him rule Wakanda longer to show that he only knew destruction and couldnt lead or build anything, or show his plan of world domination come together. It just seemed like "ooh we have cool toys, lets kill some people and make them fear us"

Also, all T'Challa had to do when Killmonger walked in is say, "Yes, he killed Klaue, because I caught him, and then Killmonger SHOT ME IN THE FACE WITH A GRENADE LAUNCHER AND TOOK HIM." then his honor guard cuts him up, scroll to credits.

All that said, Wakanda was beautiful, and more than any character in the movie I cared greatly for and loved Wakanda as a people, place, ideal. I live in Africa and so it was fun being in a theater of 95% Africans watching one of the most African (and definitely the most positive African off the top of my head) Hollywood movies ever was a blast.

I agree with everything you said. The writers should have included a little time time contrasting T'Challa's comfortable upbringing with Killmonger's difficult one to make us understand and really feel his motivations better. One brief line from Agent Ross about Kilmonger's past at MIT and with the Navy SEALS was ridiculous.

I expected Killmonger to come face to face with T'Chaka in the ancestral spirit world and verbally rip him a new ass hole for killing his dad. That probably would have done a better job of helping the audience feel his pain than having him see his dad and shed a tear. That scene just wasn't enough for me.

Man, I am extremely jealous of that experience. The thought occurred to me of how, as much fun as it's been to see the film embraced by the black community, actually seeing the reception in an African setting would be something else.

Even though it's fictional, I hope the interest in and adoration of Wakanda promotes some interest in some of the actual African countries and peoples in the world. I've only been briefly, but I've been dying to go back. The people in Zambia were just incredible.

It's north of 700mm WW now in week two and hasn't even opened in China Russia or Japan yet. For comparison, Thor did around 150mm in those three and AAOU did almost 300mm. Will be interesting to see how this does in those countries.

yes going to be interesting as those countries don't exactly embrace black culture.

I went yesterday. Considering all the hype and sellout locations, I have to give it a solid meh. To me it had the feel of an afterthought side character movie that got a lot of hype because of the subject matter.

For he most part, the acting was fantastic, but the story didn't grab me. We were just thrown into it like I had been late and the movie was already 15 minutes in. I though Jordan was pretty good and I liked his bad character.

I'm standing by GOG franchise as my favorite Marvel to this point.

I saw the movie opening weekend. I thought is was really well done. Cast was great. Visuals were great. Above were also my two big criticisms. I am baffled people think Killmonger is a great villain. He started out really well. But, once he gets to Wankanda, he goes completely one dimensional. They should have dropped the psycho revenge angle and had him really focus on Wankanda's superiority. He could have finished his father's legacy of helping "his people", by invoking a manifest destiny theology that Wankanda was meant to rule. It would have made his character more intellectual (like he starts) and kept the whole premise of his goal to take over the world. It also would have made his final (awesome) speech even a more poignant contrast to T'challa (up until then) and the Wankandan Kings of the past.

I have no idea how T'challa doesn't tell everyone that this psycho tried to kill me and risked Claw getting away just to try to get credit. That was dumb.

Overall, really enjoyable film. Upper tier MCU for sure, but not Top 5 I don't think.

I feel you...just saying I didn't think his story in BP lived up to the hype of how great he was (though I did think Jordan was superb as he usually is). Spitballing that he could have been the Loki of this next phase if they wanted to make BP more of a centerpiece of the Earth-based part of it. The drama of taking over Wakanda would have been more intersting with more development.

I finally got around to seeing it, and I felt like it was a pretty average movie for the MCU. It was enjoyable, but not anywhere near my top 5. I did have a couple of major problems.

1. They present Wakanda as this highly intelligent, advanced, peace loving society... that chooses it's leaders via a battle to the death. That really seems like something a barbaric tribe would do, not a super advanced society.

2. As others have pointed out, I thought Killmonger was a terrible villain. I felt like he was extremely one dimensional, and I didn't really understand the point of him using Klaw at the beginning to do a fake sale of the vibranium. Why not just kill Klaw and take him to Wakanda like he did later? What was the whole point of the events in South Korea?

I did love the portrayal of Africa and African culture. That was easily the highlight of the movie.

I think they set up that idea pretty well with the prologue telling about the five tribes. And it's not usually a battle, only if someone challenges the current royal lineage.

Edit: It's also not generally a battle to the death, the loser can concede.

I think the whole point was just that it was the coolest scene in the movie so they really wanted it to happen. And I'm not a BP expert, but I'm fairly certain Klaw is actually a bigger enemy of T'Challa in the comics, so I guess they wanted a prominent scene of them facing off and Klaw using his hand cannon.

I'm actually surprised he died. I figured he would be back for a longer arc.

Yes. When Titanic came out, the movie was on every damn magazine cover. I'm pretty sure Avatar was hyped like crazy as well. I was pretty young, but Jurassic Park was every where from what I remember.
Oh, and the world had Batman fever in 1989. I wasn't born yet, but Jaws was probably all over the media.

This came up on my feed today from one of those online tshirt things. Thought it was funny that somebody could think Black Panther was awesome but come away that profiting from the illegal use of Jordan's image is totally cool.

No. People are claiming some profound "truth" out of a super hero movie, and there is no equivalence.

REALLY?!?!?!?! NO WAY!!!!!

Jiffy Pop thinks he is the arbiter and can shut down a conversation point that is absolutely salient to this movie, one that is directly addressed and core to the movie's narrative.

Sorry. The racism discussion is not going away as much as some of you want it to.

I thought that it was really good. Very well done. Definitely in my top group of MCU films. Easily. I can see why it is doing well. But it is exceeding what I thought it would do at the box office. Phenomenal. Marvel out did themselves with Black Panther. Looking forward to Avengers: Infinity War.

I think if your primary interest is simply seeing a comic book movie with lots of cool action scenes, you'll be underwhelmed.

If your primary interest is in seeing how this movie fits into the overall MCU master plan of Infinity War and propels that storyline, you'll be let down.

If your interest is simply wanting to see a very well-acted action movie with a much deeper theme than your standard action movie, you'll be pleased.

I came away excited with the prospect of having another character in this MCU who is a leader on the level of Cap America. We have so many characters in this MCU now who are great fun to watch and bring something to the table in their own way, but most aren't leaders. Some can be pretty selfish actually. But T'challa seems like he could take the "leader"/moral compass torch for the next phase.

I never understood why Tony Stark didn't give everyone on the avengers an Iron man suit. Now I'll wonder why they all don't also have vibranium suits.

I mean, if these guys were really team players, Hawkeyes and Widow should at least have one.

I think you nailed it. I freely admit there definitely could have been more action, but to me that lack of action didn't matter as much because of how well acted the film was and how much I enjoyed all the characters. But I think you nailed why some people feel "meh" about it and that's OK.
