I'm not really into the Marvel movies, although I have seen a few of them. I went to see this because of all the hype and I really enjoyed it. It kept me entertained from start to finish, so I would day 8/10 for me. I saw it on opening day here in Cambodia, and all the locals gave it a standing ovation at the end.

For me it was a 5 to 6 out of 10.

The two male leads were good and worked. But I had a large number of things that bugged me.

The script was decent and the editing fairly tight. But the action sequences weak. I'm scratch8ng my head over the Korean sequence. The best of all the fight scenes was the final one. Otherwise, based off of Creeds excellent fights I expected better.
Next the score was incredibly heavy handed to the point of being distracting. In fact a lot of the movie seemed to be dedicated to hitting you across the face with a 2 x 4 telling you how to feel.
A lot of the secondary characters seemed to live at one extreme or another. Subtlety was. Not a major part of the film.
It also seemed to try and capture the humor of Guardians (it didn't) and bring across the moral of one of the Captain Americas (eh... I guess but. To me the message was too diffuse compared to those films).
I liked the film but I doubt I'll re-watch it. Top half of the MCU but way behind the best of the bunch.
Probably on par with the new Spiderman.

Meh.

I'm not a mathematician, but wouldn't 5/10 be about average?

Is that what you told your teachers when you got a 50% on your math test?

50% was above average in MATH 152.

Is that engineering math II? I got a C in that class and was very happy. Engineering math III was easier.
I'm assuming this is the equivalent of the Calc 2 course I took at my undergrad institution. I got a C too and I'm pretty sure it was a pity C from the instructor because I went to office hours all the time.

And yeah, Calc 3 was way easier.

Hoopla was a bit much. I get the importance but it's a bit obvious that the reviews were a little slanted. A movie that has bad cgi rhinos in armor deserves a bit more criticism.

As a whole it ranks around Spider-Man: Homecoming, Antman, and Dr. Strange territory. A good movie that deserves praise for being a good self contained story in a massive universe. Cast was fine, story was mostly fine, plot had his holes, and the villain, while I empathized with him greatly, was mostly forgettable.

That being said, I'm a redneck conservative and I think that the political message was a good one. I understood Killmonger's pain and his reasoning, but revenge isn't the answer, forgiveness and moving forward is. I think they made a good point there without beating people over the head. The tweet about past vs future was spot on.
I think its cool that there are a ton of valid messages in this movie that aren't beat over the head and come from different views on the political spectrum. Makes me really happy to see this viewpoint from a conservative as oppose to "OMG SJW".

I thought the movie was pretty boring. I was surprised by how much I liked last year's Marvel releases....Guardians 2, Spider-Man, and Thor....this didn't come anywhere close in terms of comedy or action.

Whoever put together the trailer for this movie deserves an award, because I got a completely different vibe from watching car chases with Run the Jewels playing in the background. Black Panther only really fights in his suit twice....once in the casino chase, the other against the other tribes in Wakanda. which was a shame considering how well suited Boseman was for the part and the powers that they showed that he was capable of in the movie.

Not a good comedy. Not a good action movie. Not a good drama. It got stuck somewhere in-between all of those and the result was something I wish I'd waited to rent.

Saw it last night and would give it a 7.5/10.

I enjoyed the movie and was entertained the whole time. I thought the cast worked well together, and overall was a fun ride. I thought they did a great job for this origin story and creating the story of Wakanda. I thought Killmonger was one of the better Marvel villains we've had, I actually felt bad for him.

My main gripe is I wish they hadn't relied so heavily on CGI, there was quite a few times where things started to look ridiculous.

I never felt like I was being lectured or smacked in the face with political ideas.

It's a good addition to the Marvel universe, and I hope to see more of Black Panther in Avengers Infinity War.

A few stray thoughts:
  • I can't believe Chadwick Boseman is 41 years old
  • I cracked up at Klaue singing baby don't hurt me

Saw it last night - disclaimer not a huge MCU or superhero fan but I see them all eventually.

It was pretty good. Top 5 of MCU????.....maybe. I'd have to see it again which will probably be cable someday.

The world building and the visuals were downright stunning. Incredible actually.

I liked a lot of the characters good and bad ones - the Black Panther guy was awesome, the sister and really all of the chicks (guards, ex gf) and both villains Killmonger and Klaue.

The story had some depth, nice tie-ins back to the flashback scenes, etc. Music was superb.

Damn I think I did like it. lol. Hard to come up with any negatives really...it was a little long though but they often are.

Certainly I think it is the best Origin story of the MCU. Yeah better than Iron Man. Unless you consider Guardians an origin story but it's more of a collective story to me with some origin in it.

Quick question, was any reason given for why Killmonger initially worked with Klaw instead of just killing him and bringing him to wakanda right off the bat? It seemed Killmonger's entire plan was kill Klaw, bring his body to Wakanda to win support, challenge for king. So I wasn't sure why he was initially working with Klaw (unless, perhaps, he was hoping Klaw would draw out and kill T'Challa for him.)

I really enjoyed it. It's getting hard to rank these movies, but it's definitely top tier for me. I thought the villain had shades of magneto in him, albeit less refined, in how childhood experiences with prejudice motivated his actions.
Thanks and gig'em

Ladies and gentlemen, can I please have your attention...

Just so we're crystal clear on this and more people see it, starting in the next few hours, general, non-spoiler Black Panther reactions will be relegated to the official MCU thread. While all spoiler conversation should be reserved for this thread and all spoilers should be appropriately tagged/hidden. However, come Monday, spoiler tags will no longer be required in this thread and all bets are off.
just wanted to remind people of this so they don't get mad when they start seeing spoilers in here.

So since the final stone wasn't revealed in Black Panther, where do you think it is?

I still think Heimdal has it.

Thanos attacks the Asguardians to get the Tesseract and realizes the Heimdal has the soul gem (or maybe he already knows about it). With the soul gem, he can see all the souls in the galaxy, and therefore see who is in possession of the other stones. Then he can use the Tesseract to teleport to each location.

This is the most plausible. I don't know where else it would be.

My assumption...

Klaue isn't a guy who's easily found as the Wakandans had been trying to track him down for a while, it took the promise of Vibranium for Killmonger to connect with him. That also gives him an in to that whole underground network, resources, and a way to find out more of what's happening behind the scenes, learn more about Wakanda, etc.

Side note: I love that my new phone autocorrected to capitalize "Vibranium"

Outside of Iron Man and GotG if you count it, MCU hasn't done origin stories all that well.

Some of the Netflix shows have been great though.

No disagreement here. Both sequels to Captain America were better than the original. I was just saying I thought it was a pretty well done origin story.

Still my fave, loved how it went spy/political thriller.

My top 5 right now are something like
1. Winter Soldier
2. GotG
3. Black Panther
4. Iron Man
5. Thor Ragnarok

With Homecoming, GotG Vol 2, Civil War, and Avengers somewhere in the mix.

MBJ was excellent as Killmonger IMO. Any scene he was in just livened instantly. From a high-level perspective, the storyline was really good. The person that made the trailer deserves a few awards since it was so much grittier than the actual film. All the Marvel movies are very commercial-washed and family friendly to a fault.

As I watched it I realized how tough it is to make a really good origin story superhero movie. Essentially all my other favorites had multiple movies to lean on for character or context.

That being said I think that I liked this just about as much as I liked GOTG and the first Iron Man. Wakanda was really unique and cool, and the acting was really good highlighted by Michael B Jordan. I think it set a great base for future Black Panther movies. I'd give it an 8/10, with added high expectations for a sequel.
