I am not black, but I'd have to think that it's probably a really cool thing for a young black kid to go see a MCU movie and see a legit leading superhero (and majority of the cast) on screen that are black, confident, and kicking ass.

It's like everybody forgot Blade exists.
young kids shouldn't be watching Blade.

The higher the tracking goes the higher my prediction goes.

Or... the tracking could have caught up to what I (and many others) were/are predicting. But instead, because the tracking on this movie, in particular, is poised to likely be more incorrect than the tracking for other blockbusters, I'm raising my prediction. So it's not quite the obvious statement you're mocking.

I don't know how this works, but if everyone knows the tracking is likely to be way off, wouldn't the companies doing the tracking try to bake that into thier algorithms?

The first critic to give an honest review will effectively end his/her/zee/zir career. Whether the movie is any good makes no difference, if any shortcomings are presented by a critic they are done.

It's at 97% on Rotten Tomatoes, so someone gave it a bad review already, right?

Not anyone of consequence. When I say critic I don't mean some jag-off with a youtube channel.

What if everyone major critic likes it?

You aren't going to believe that obviously since you think people will lose their career if they give a bad review.

So why bother discussing the movie?

Due to what happened with Wonder Woman, I am putting exactly zero stock into any critic reviews for this one.

But, I do think/hope it turns out to be good. WW looked great in the trailers and didn't live up to them, imo.

There have already been negative reviews / backlash and no one's career is ended. I think you're trying a little too hard to turn this into something it's not.

I thought WW was badass.

Of course as a moderate, reasonable right leaning independent I'm a lefty, beta, **** on the Politics board so maybe my movie opinions are all social justice crap.

My son wants to see this movie because all his friends want to.

I am hoping he can tag along with some of them so I don't have to go.

Don't worry, Armond White will give it a negative review. That will actually be pretty funny to see if there is any backlash over a black film critic giving a negative review over Black Panther.

I finally saw WW over the course of two works out this week. Could not agree more. It was just thoroughly meh for me. I thought the Gal Gadot factor alone could keep my interest but it was just kind of boring, uninteresting characters, and just like with Batman V Superman, an incredibly drawn out, uninspired, GCI fight at the end. I did like the ice cream cone scene.

tell me about it. The opening 20 minutes were cringeworthy. CGI was awful, dialogue was forced, and the beach battle was super disjointed. It started to get a little better going forward but it was nothing impressive at all imo.

I'm going to wait on Black Panther...1) because I'm not super into having to see super hero movies quickly... 2) because I'm traveling this weekend and 3) because I think a film that is being as hyped with such strong "outside" circumstances influencing that hype, the real reactions will happen during weeks 3-5 from audience reviews & box office numbers.

Very curious to see how this film does though. Hoping it's close to as good as the many glowing reviews say.

It was fun, and I understand why it was a big thing culturally, but while it was the best of the DC films it was just ok overall.

Black Panther has a director who's previous two features average a 94.5 on RT, 83 or so on Metacritic, and have garnered one Oscar nom, a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance, and countless other nominations and wins. I've got pretty high hopes.

So you are saying that your confirmation bias prevents you from thinking that there isn't one critic out there without confirmation bias.

Wonderful.

Two questions:

1) Who's seeing this when this weekend? Anyone going tonight? (I'm not seeing it until Friday night.)

2) I assume we need to start a spoiler thread and leave this one for general reactions? Isn't that what we decided is standard protocol after the confusion over The Last Jedi thread(s)?

Why wouldn't this be the spoiler thread and let the general non spoiler stuff stay on the MCU thread until a reasonable amount of time has passed?

I'm all for that and I definitely think that makes the most sense. But we tried that exact same scenario with The Last Jedi / Star Wars threads and a surprising amount of people b*tched about not seeing the copious amount of warnings/notices that had literally been posted for days on both threads that the main TLJ thread was going to become spoiler central night of the release.
TCTTS

I guess there were people who hadn't visited the main TLJ thread in weeks, then jumped on the night of to see reactions, and were spoiled. Still, I don't see how they missed all the warnings.

What does everyone else think?

Also, probably going tonight. Will post thoughts after.

That makes sense. I've always thought three threads for one movie is insane.

Not sure why folks need a spoiler thread when we have spoiler tags.

But then again, i tend to avoid reading movie threads until I've seen the movie because I don't want to be spoiled by folks who don't use the tags.

*shrug*
Thanks and gig'em

I hear you, but I guess for me the "discussion" aspect gets kind of lost when it's just post after post of redacted back text. It's not as fun or easy to read.

That said, I can handle it for the weekend. Will post notices in both threads unless there are any major objections.

I was one of those people that *****ed. The thread was like 80 pages long, I checked it most days and still missed the "copious" warnings (there were like 2 or 3).

Between the TLJ thread and the main SW thread, I'd say there were at least ten posts discussing the protocol, if not far more. I don't know how else to let everyone know, and starting a third thread just seems like overkill.

I checked out of the multi hundred page Star Wars thread a long time ago, there's always been two threads for these huge releases, and when there was a thread titled TLJ spoiler thread, it makes sense based on past history of this board that the other thread would be spoiler free.

I'm seeing it tonight. I really hope it lives up to the hype.

EDIT

Had no idea Chadwick Boseman is 40. Black don't crack.

You don't need a warning. Threads about movies will have spoilers once they're released.
