Too flat and dry but close enough for Hollywood.
Really enjoyed the first episode but, when they were doing a shot around the compound (I guess that is what you would call it) there are some mountains in the background. Really threw me off.

Really enjoyed the first episode. I was born a few months after this so outside of a google search learning about this for the first time.

I didn't notice mountains but I thought the landscape wasn't too far off.

If you look at Mount Carmel in GoogleEarth and street view it doesn't look all that different than the landscape on tv.

BTW looking at the Mount Carmel Center on GoogleEarth is kinda creepy. If you turn photos on you can see a new church and small community out there along with remnants of the old compound.

Is Michael Shannon ever bad in a role?

Not that I've seen. Interesting thing about "Waco" is that MS is playing the hostage negotiator. Will be interesting to see him tackle a role that requires him to be the calmest guy in the room. An interesting departure from his other, more famous roles.

Watching "Waco" also reminds me of how many very good character actors got their big break from "Boardwalk Empire." Funny because BE gave Steve Buscemi, a popular character actor, his big break as a leading man.

He's calm in many of his roles.

Which still scares the living sh*t out of me.

Yep, I worked a Ranch that was next door to the compound (after it happened). Thought to myself, "How did I miss those mountains!?"

Ranch owner told some CRAZY stories about that whole deal.

BW was a great show. I recently started a re-watch and it really holds up. Capone is one of my favorite characters from an HBO series.

I honestly did not pay much attention to this when it was going on..... but if the plot of this series is anywhere close to reality it is pretty much confirming everything my right wing nut-job acquaintances every said about the atf/fbi & this situation.

I am actually surprised somebody put this show together in our current political climate.

Still cant believe Micheal Pitt isn't a big star. I know I've heard he is a pain off camera.

Man Kitsch is just killing it in this role. He never struck me as an amazing actor (not bad either) even though I really enjoyed FNL, but he has really elevated himself with this show.

Have seen some articles about how they're making it seem like Koresh was a good guy. I think there's a fine line between where the show is trying to make the audience understand how persuasive he was and why so many people would follow him and showing him as the creep he really was. Will be interesting how they portray him in the next 4 episodes.

Yeah I think that's exactly what they're trying to do and I think they're doing a great job of it. But we did see flashes of him starting to get aggressive and controlling.

One question I have...Did they really have a team camped out next door and an undercover infiltrator? I've seen and read some stuff on this and I don't recall at all.

Yep. Complete CF.

I also think they're doing a good job depicting the political climate at the time and showing why they were so dead set on doing this thing the way they did.

Really interested in how they portray the siege from inside. Outside of phone calls and a few survivors that made it out not much is known about what went down inside in the final moments

Go on...
For one, he ran Brangus cattle on his place and according to him they were all fairly docile before the raid. The combination of 1 day of tons of gunfire, loud music throughout the ordeal, helicopters flying super low during the whole deal and pretty much constant chaos for 53 days turned his herd into some of the craziest cows i've ever been around.

He'd find random camp fire sites on his property before the assault. He routinely chased the Davidians off his land . They trespassed all the time. His full time hand was a deeply spiritual guy that spoke with Koresh and to this day believes Koresh turned into a coyote and escaped the compound.

Heard gunfire before the assault and peeked over a hilltop to see a line of 40-50 people shooting into the creek on his land with all types of weapons.

This may be a really dumb question, but why were the feds after Koresh? I realize he was a nut job and all but what laws were he or any other Branch Davidians breaking?

I also seem to hear reports that the members, including Koresh, routinely went into town for supplies and food and that the authorities had plenty of chances to nab them if they wanted but passed. This was a long time ago so my recollection may be fuzzy.

Also, does anyone else have to pay extra for Paramount network? Pretty sure I have the Xfinity triple play package and it is telling me I have to subscribe any time I try to watch.

This last episode covered some of what you're asking. Basically statutory rape. He got married to and (i think) impregnated a 12 year old (she may have been 14). Being married to more than one woman. Sexual abuse and child abuse. Owning illegal weapons.

The depiction of Ruby Ridge was BS. They made it seem like a random shot from the FBI sniper killed the mother inside the house. She was outside the house when he executed her.

I've read in multiple places she was shot through the door, which, militarily speaking, makes it worse. It's even shown in the Ruby Ridge miniseries/Movie thing.

"...then, as Weaver, his 16-year-old daughter Sara, and Harris ran back toward the house, Horiuchi fired a second bullet, killing Vicki Weaver, and wounded Harris in the chest. Vicki Weaver was standing behind the door through which Harris was entering the house, holding their 10-month-old baby Elisheba, in her arms."

Yes. Koresh made him nearly instantly. The feds had no idea that they were made until Koresh told the undercover guy to stop the attack.

Although it's nearly universally acknowledged now that there was never any child abuse going on.

If you want read into Koresh. I did awhile back and learned that Koresh was on the law enforcement radar way before this incident. FWIW you know how it ends so what's the harm in reading up on it.

Him and the Davidians had a long history with law enforcement and we're no stranger to the judicial system. How he came to power within the Branch Davidians and at Mount Carmel is actually pretty fascinating.

Watching this is so surreal. My grandparents lived in Hewitt at the time, grandfather worked for City of Waco and grandmother for Mt. Carmel water plant. My parents and I drove up from Houston probably 7-8 weekends out of the year to visit and went out there during the standoff at one point. We got about as close as where BDR water park is now until being "kindly" asked to leave by FBI/ATF agents. It was such a spectacle with all of the tents selling gag shirts and what not.

It's not a dumb question at all especially if you were young at the time. I was college age.

The Clinton/Reno JD was hell bent on gun control at the time and cooking up tall tales of white, right wing, militias being some super threat to the country, which of course was BS as we all know.

Koresh was targeted by the feds for trumped up accusation of converting "assault rifles" to fully auto rifles, essentially "weapons charges". This never came to fruition even after the fact. The Reno JD turned loose the BATFE to conduct a raid on the compound.

The raid was ill conceived and meant to send some sort of shock wave across the imagined boogie men of the times. In reality, the Branch Davidians took up arms against what they believed was a hostile force bent on killing them. Four ATF agents were killed. Several wounded. And the then siege/standoff began.

Koresh could have easily been taken in custody, easily, so many times. Doing so would have cut the head off the proverbial snake and ended this. People did not need to die. Children did not need to die. The McClennan Co Sheriff testified before Congress on this. They could have easily brought Koresh in but the feds took over and wanted a show of force. Plain and simple.

Koresh was a nutjob and ultimately the Branch Davidians have no one to blame but themselves. But our govt was simply out of control on this. Cooler heads did not prevail. The massacre was very avoidable and should have been.

I've posted several times over the years. Steve willis was a very good friend of mine. Racing buddy. He had a really cool, honorable career. He was a dod agent investigating defense contractor fraud.

Well, guess what. The Feds didn't want that. They didn't think it was a cool, honorable career. They thought he was a snitch. So one day he tells me he's moving to the ATF. I said 'Steve, wtf? The Feds have no business regulating alcohol, tobacco, or firearms! It's a bull**** deal. You'll be the bad guy! Don't do it.

Steve said, I have less than no future with dod. Gotta go where the funds and action are. I have all this cool assault gear.

That was the last conversation I ever had with steve.

He died in the raid. My friend was a clear cut, no grey area bad guy. No different than a nkvd or gestapo agent. They had no business whatsoever going on that raid. 100% government evil.

My girlfriend ran track for Baylor. She ran right by that compound every day. She saw and interacted those people. They were fine. Good neighbors.

The davidians were not mainstream. So what.

The whole point of this country is to have freedom to be different.

The funeral was huge. 2nd baptist in houston.

One of those atf agents was showing off koresh's car. They stole it during the standoff.

None of the ****ing Commie sicko criminals that got steve and all those innocent people killed paid for it. None were even severely punished.

It was absolute travesty. Steve died for less than nothing, and his ATF folks murdered over 80 innocent American men women and children for nothing.
