The other comment that was made by Brolin that was true was about when the border is tightened it's good for the cartels business.

Is that because if it were easy they'd just cross on their own... When it's tight they are paying 1 Grand per person to get cartel help?

That's what I took it to mean. Either way, just goes to show that whenever good pushes, bad pushes back. Always. Thus one of the themes of this series... Necessary evils playing for "the good guys".

Pretty rare I'll see a movie twice in the theater but I'm betting I catch this one again sometime this summer. Loved it.

Movie took a pretty unexpected turn halfway through, but that was pretty good.

Agreed. I don't get where a couple of these people are coming from in their "surprise." From the very first trailer, this has looked amazing. I guess there were doubts because of no Villeneuve?

For me, it was this, plus no Deakins, plus general sequel cynicism. And the trailers didn't do much for me either.

Glad I gave it a chance though.

Just saw it, wow.

Went in knowing it wasnt going to be like the first and my expectations werent too high but damn did this movie deliver. In its own unique way that separated itself from the first yet continued the great characters we loved from the first. Cannot wait for the third movie

One thing I noticed (and liked)...we weren't presented with the typical Hollywood spec ops/paramilitary weightlifting bros with beards and khaki uniforms. It was refreshing.

I've been having bad theater experiences more and more lately, but today was particularly bad when I went to see this movie.

There was an older couple in front of me, and the woman answered a call during the damn movie. She tried to end it quick, at least.

About 20 minutes later, the husband takes out his phone and starts texting. On the brightest setting no less, and holding the phone UP to his face for everyone to see. I gave it a little while hoping he'd be quick. Nope. He went a good two minutes and showed no signs of stopping anytime soon. Had enough and asked them to put the phone away, and the lady tells me "It's an emergency". Give me a ****ing break. Luckily he put it the hell away.

On top of this, someone's phone rang behind me during the movie, twice. You couldn't silence it the first time?

I swear to God people have no god dang courtesy and it's absolutely enraging.

If it's an emergency he needs to gtfo of the theater.

That sucks man. I've had really good luck for a while now but I hate when **** like that happens

First and foremost - liked the movie, although it definitely fell off in the middle.

Secondly, McAllen looks NOTHING like what was in this move as I live in McAllen. It's actually a very sprawling city that is absolutely flat and has no desert feel to t at all. If they would have said Rio Grande City, it would have been more believable. On a lighter note, the main HEB I go to on a weekly basis is the "grocery store on the corner of Trenton."

Overall good movie, but I did enjoy the original more.

Sat by some gentlemen of the cholo variety tonight at Edwards Marquee and we were pretty much laughing, cringing, gasping at the same exact moments. Pretty impressive, given the subject matter and current political climate right now largely revolving around border issues.

There's good and evil on both sides in this one and everyone's rootin for the same team no matter political stance or ethnicity.

Benicio Del Toro is a str8 up badass. That girl who played Isabel knocked it out of the park too.

60% or whatever it's getting is laughable imo.

Saw it last night and left feeling unsatisfied. They never got the cartel guys they just killed a bunch of coyotes. What did they accomplish? The daughter being put into witness protection? That makes no sense, what is she testifying about? Why didn't they send her back to her family?

Great action like the first film but the story line needed more work.

That was my biggest issue also.

The cartels never actually got involved and nothing was resolved. It was just pointless violence.

I suppose that was probably the point, though.

I don't think they wanted to kill either cartel head. They kidnapped the daughter and created a war between the cartels to weaken both of them I guess? I agree I don't think that their motivation was as strong as in the first movie. It didn't quite tie out as well.

What yall are explaining is a major underlying theme in the film, as Brian alluded to. Which is why no traditional "payoff" works so well for me.

I absolutely noticed this as soon as they showed the first shot of McAllen. They filmed in NM, so makes sense.

Sending her back to her family would likely mean a great chance of death since the cartel war has been successfully started.

They were trying to manufacture a war between the rival cartels and they did just that. I am guessing the big bosses guys will be the focus of the next one.

Oh and the coyotes do work for the cartels...it's just a diff department than drugs.

I kind of assumed the cartel guys did get involved, hence the Mexican police coming after them with all their might?

Tangent: New Mexico does a fantastic job of getting films, not sure how much incentive they give but it must be huge

I think they did the same with a lot of HOHW. Wonder if they get tax breaks or other incentives for filming in NM vs TX?

See my post above, state of NM markets themselves heavily to filmmakers so I'm sure there are massive incentives involved

Gotcha, looks like we posted at the same time. I always wondered why Breaking Bad was filmed in ABQ.

So the girl is just going to sit in witness protection separated from her family and remain silent? That makes no sense. The film didn't succeed in revealing what the girl was about or what she was thinking by the end of the.movie.

Her arc for this film was accomplished. As I put in the spoilers, she flipped completely throughout the movie once she was subject to the realities of her father's work and finished completely in shock and disassociated.

Also, just because he said put her in witness protection doesn't mean that's where she'll ultimately go. That line was meant to hammer home how even the hardened Matt is flipping and leaving his "I take no sides, just do what I'm told" persona and making a decision in direct opposition to the US government's request.

And her story may very well not be over. We all think (and hope) Alejandro faces Reyes in the third, and she will likely play a key role in that.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I disagree, I left the movie with no clue about her motivation. Does she feel empathy for the guy whose family was killed due to her father's business? Does she feel shame about her father being a murderous drug kingpin? The movie never revealed any of that and at the end I didn't care whether she made it out or not.

Well for starters she wasn't the main subject of the film. And she's a kid so I'm sure she's got conflicted feelings. Her arc is meant to build the overall theme of the movie and world they're in... Which is the border issues, cartels, and war on drugs is bad, confusing, hostile, no one entity is the good or bad side... And all 3 have no solution in sight, yet it still goes on just like it always has.

That being said, she did show empathy by sleeping on Alejandro's shoulder on the bus.

Showing it like that versus the traditional "hey stupid" Hollywood mantra where they make it so obvious by adding a a line that feels out of place is much better imo.

To piggyback on this...

I felt her "ah-ha" moment came during the conversation with Alejandro outside the house...

"You're the lawyer whose family they killed."
"Not 'they'."

Then the long pause until she realized and said: "My father."

I personally thought it was pretty clear that she felt for the man whose family her father had killed. And that she felt a sense of comfort under his wing. She didn't really have to say anything.

Yep good point. That's when he made it clear to her.

Alejandro seems a lot like Omar(wire) in a sense. Hes got a code. And Reyes broke the rules of the game.

So is it pretty well established that this is going to be a franchise going forward?
