It was explained that that's not how it worked. Someone who was living had to know the dead while they were alive and then pass the stories down in order to keep their memory alive.

Alive person 1 knows alive person 2. Alive person 2 dies. Alive person 1 must talk about memories of now dead person 2 before alive person 1 dies. Otherwise now dead person 2 disappears from the beyond just as now dead person 1 arrives.

I've gone cross-eyed.

I enjoyed this movie, but did not love it. I'd probably put it in the middle of the pack of Pixar.
