To this day, Tron: Legacy is still one of the most beautifully-shot and visually stunning modern blockbusters I can recall. Seven years later, those visuals still hold up - save for young, CGI Jeff Bridges, which never worked in the first place - I just wish the plot had lived up to the look. The basic idea of Flynn getting trapped in The Grid for years on end, and his son having to rescue him, was a great conceit. But a "rescue movie" doesn't work if the hostage doesn't want to be rescued in the first place. And the plot comes to a screeching halt when Sam finally finds his dad after all those years, and what should be a great, poignant moment is ruined by the fact that, at least on the surface, Kevin could not care less that his son there to save him. It's such a weird, boneheaded decision on the part of the filmmakers, and the plot never recovers from that point forward (not that it didn't have a couple problems before that point as well). Overall, there are still two or three immensely re-watchable action sequences - even the final 15 minutes or so is pretty spectacular, visually speaking - but man, what could have been had they tweaked a few narrative diversions here and there.
Anyway, the film's director, Jospeh Kosinski, spoke to Collider last night about what the plot was - and still could be - for a third movie. A script was nearly completed and the stars are willing to return, but Kosinksi explains why it hasn't happened just yet...
He then goes on to tease the plot of the third movie itself...
Parts of that sound cool, others not so much, but I would still at least like to see them get their shot to try. Could you imagine being so successful as a studio that you can't even find the time/window to make a movie like this?
Either way, the link to the full story is below, along with the original first trailer for Legacy, one that held so much promise and one that people went absolutely apesh*t for back in the day...

"I mean, you have to remember that when we made TRON: Legacy, Disney did not own Marvel. Disney did not own Lucasfilmthey own everything now. But this was before they owned everything, so from the studio point of view, they have a certain number of slots and a certain amount of money to make movies and if you can make a Star Wars spinoff or another Marvel movie, which are all doing incredibly well, a TRON movie, even though I think it would do very well, the question is: Would it do as well as one of those? That is more the reason we haven't seen another TRON is that Disney stock is flushed with really successful properties right now. But that doesn't mean we won't see one at one point."

"The movie was called, 'TRON: Ascension', I think that's out there. I think we got the script to about 80%. We were in good shape. We were probably eight or nine months out, which is still a good amount of distance from being ready to shoot it, but I think the script was in good shape. What I'm excited about is the concept, which is an invasion movie from inside the machine coming out as opposed to one we've usually seen. So we hinted at that at the end of Legacy with Quorra coming out, but the idea for Ascensionwas a movie that was, the first act was in the real world, the second act was in the world of TRON, or multiple worlds of TRON, and the third act was totally in the real world. And I think that really opens up, blows open the concept of TRON in a way that would be thrilling to see on screen. But there's also a really interesting character study in Quorra and a 'Stranger in a Strange Land,' trying to figure out where she belongs having lived in the real world for a few years, and where does she fit in."
