What led to the downfall of Creed?

They came on strong with their first album, had a meteoric rise in popularity over the next few years, and then broke up, and became a laughing stock. No one will admit to ever liking any of their music. While other bands from the time occasionally find there songs on the radio (the stations that aren't all current all the time), Creed is practically exiled. Why does everyone hate them so much, now?

I think if the band, particularly Scott Stapp, had not acted as if everything was a sacrifice for them to take even one last breath, their fans would have embraced them with arms wide open.

You know how in Multiplicity the clone of Michael Keaton's original clone is way dumber? Creed is like the 6th clone of a clone of Pearl Jam.

I enjoyed their first album. Or maybe that was Seven Mary Three.

Probably had to do with the fact that the internet and Napster became common around then and people were finally able to find better music than whatever their local Rock radio station was pushing at the time.

A d-bag that tried to pass himself and his music off as Christian, all the while being very NOT Christian.

Short answer, they broke up and music changed, when they came back and released a new album it had been 8 years and people's taste had moved on.

The thing about music is you don't need a huge following to be fairly successful. Are Creed filling arenas? Naw, but they can sell out a House of Blues most nights so they will keep on keeping on. I think most people will hate on them but even if 10% of rock radio listeners like them it's enough to keep them afloat.

I don't hate or love Creed but it seems like we need a band every few years to be a punching bag. You had the 80's hair metal bands during the Nirvana era, Creed during the nu-metal era, and Nickelback for whatever era we are in now.

Don't forget U2 whenever they released their album for free on whatever the new Iphone was at the time.

And now the 80's hair metal bands are back to selling out big venues.

Give 'em 10-15 years, they could reunite, and guarantee they would sell out a decent sized venue.

Heck, Vanilla Ice could put on shows today and get people to come out, even if just for the irony of it.

Considering the talent in the band is currently party of a successful band in Alter Bridge, I dont see them revisiting Creed.

I will openly admit I owned Creed's first three albums (no idea if they had more) and had them on constant rotation.

Creed solidly appealed to the high school Christian kid trying to get a little more alternative / distance from Michael W Smith and Steven Curtis Chapman, and also put out some infectious lamely head-banging choruses.

I can't explain it, and I'm not claiming it was good, but I was into it.

And With Arms Wide Open is absolute money on karaoke these days.

Oh this is about the band.

My first thought was Apollo Creed.

Second thought was about the X-Men villain Sabretooth.

I still jam some Creed from time to time. The song they did for Scream 3, Is This The End?, is a pretty good jam though.

I also find it funny that they are accused of pretending to be a Christian band. Their website way back in '99/'00 had a FAQ section...

1. Are you a Christian band?
No

2. If you are a Christian band why do you say "God d---?"
See answer to question 1

granted, Stapp's lyrics were very spirtual, especially in the 2nd and 3rd albums, but I don't think they ever went around pretending to be a Christian band.

So, where do you stand in regards to that statement?

Stapp Oh, I'm a Christian. I was a Christian in Creed, but nobody ever asked me.

You've been really open in this interview. Is that because I'm with the Christian media? Or would you answer these questions similarly for the mainstream media?

Stapp The nature of my answers are a lot different now that I'm no longer with Creed. I'm a solo artist now, and I don't have a band to hide behind. So when someone asks me if I'm a Christian, I have to say yes, because I am. But do you know I was never asked in 10 years if I was a Christian personally? We were only asked if Creed was a Christian band.

Well, you never got interviewed by us!

Stapp (laughs): But I'm glad nobody asked, because my life wasn't right with God. The Christian community latched onto a lot of my music, because there were a lot of things about my struggle they related to. But I didn't really want to come out and be identified as a Christian, because I didn't want to be a hypocrite, because my life wasn't right. I didn't want to make any kind of public profession until I felt like my heart was right.

I've since learned that my life's never gonna be right, and I'm always going to be scrutinized and looked at under a microscope. And it took me, since I was 17 and left home, running from God, to now, as a 30-year-old man, when I honestly feel like I've come full circle and my heart's finally in the right place. I'm still going to make mistakes, but I don't have any problems with publicly professing my faith now. It just took me a long time to get to the right place in my relationship with Christ.

It's just crazy how things have come full circle for me as a solo artist. I kind of look at everything that happened with Creed as a preparationme going through things to get my life ready for God's plan. It's been a journey and a learning experience.

LOL...you know, Creed was in a pretty famous band at one time himself. And Creed Bratton is his real name.

define the genre? From the same era, godsmack and disturbed are still around, though a bit heavier and more in the metal crowd. Creeds first album was pretty raw and heavy though. I dug it, even after it was popular to hate them.

Nickelback is still around. Touring right now.
Breaking Benjamin is similar, and back on the radio and stage after hiatus. Staind comes to mind. They're gone for now, but plenty of staying power to reunite and tour.

I'm sure there are more. Alt/Nu-metal with a few adult crossover hits to catapult the album sales.

Did Breaking Benjamin settle all their legal disputes? How much of the current band is original members?

Probably not. Scott Stapp had (and still has) major mental issues (yes, insert joke here, but he has been diagnosed as a paranoid schizophrenic). It led to the breakup of the band, his divorce, and then wandering down a highway in Florida in teh middle of the night mumbling to himself, until he was picked up by the authorities.

Meanwhile, the rest of the band has gone on to form Alter Bridge, and is actually quite successful. I actually like the stuff from Alter Bridge, as I thought Mark Tremonti was pretty talented as a guitarist, if he could just ahve gotten away from the d-baggery of Stapp.

Ok, have at me now with the jokes and comments, as a lot of people lump these bands in with Nickelback, which I am NOT a big fan of, and don't see the resemblance, but whatever...
