Anyone remember the band Tantric? I came across a list of rock songs that hit #1 on the billboard charts in the 2000s, and they had a song on the list.
Oh wow...I haven't heard that band name in a while. What was the name of it? Breakdown or something?
i liked Days of the New better, but Tantric was pretty much the same, even the new lead singer sounded almost the same.
Kind of weird that Travis wrote every song on days of the new, but then the gtr/bass/drummer leave, and then write album for tantric that sounds very similar.. you'd think it was the same writers in both instances, but it wasn't.

DOTN was much more raw.. that album just sounds like a dude playing acoustic in a room with a bass player through a $50 amp and a drummer on a jazz kit. Tantric was a bit more produced, polished and multi tracked.

Man I was so pissed when Travis was scheduled to play a place over in Cypress, the sidecar pub off huffmeister, was so stoked to see him at a tiny place, playing some DOTN.. but of course, he canceled.

As I consider all the bands mentioned on this thread, what comes to mind is:

Drop D tuning
Lyrics that are dark, "deep", and basically no fun whatsoever
Black clothes and new tattoos
Subdued anger and frustration, probably with the reality that their brand of music was on such a decline
Guitar solos - still dead
Harmonies - none

Does System of a Down fit into this genre? What about Flyleaf? I used to jam the **** out of both of those bands in Jr. High / High School.

There was also this very distinct vocal style. I know this thread started with creed, and Stapp of course was seen as doing some third rate Eddie Vedder-by-way-of -Adam-Sandler-Opera-Man impression, but the early 2000 bands had this other sound. It was very 'pinched' like every bite was being sung through clenched teeth. I guess I would cite Staind as the prototype for this sound. The production also went a long way in defining this vocal sound, because producers were laying heavily on the auto tune. Every note that is held for more than a second comes ends up sounding like a square wave, there is rarely a hint of vibrato anywhere.

To each their own, but for me that vocal sound just always sounded so lifeless. Even if there may be some decent songs in that bunch, it's hard for me to listen to.

Oh and the ballads! So many ballads!

That basically describes Tool to a T, and look how well they've done.

For 80s rock it was regular tuning, lyrics that are shallow and that of what a 15 year could come up with, bright clothes and spandex, cockiness and arrogance, probably from the reality of them thinking their music would never decline, etc. etc..

I still think it is pretty cool that DOTN's debut album was recorded when those guys were 17.

The 2nd album that had Travis as pretty much the only person playing all of the instruments is solid as well. I agree that Tantric is incredibly similar, but is more polished. I prefer DOTN because of this aspect. When focused, Travis writes some really cool, dark acoustic guitar riffs. He also has a really sweet jazzy lead playing style.

It's too bad he's a crazy drug addict.

yeh silverchair is pretty much the only band that comes to most people's mind when asked about a debut rock album recorded by teenagers.

Course, Metallica is always my go to answer!
Well James and Lars were teenagers anyway.

Creed's downfall was pure Scott Stapp, but the reality is that they would have died regardless. Rock music is absolutely dead as a mainstream genre. It gets zero play anywhere outside of Octane. Creed just happened to be one of the last truly popular bands of the genre.

That doesn't mean that what is out now is bad at all. On the contrary rock is better than ever, but it will never regain the popularity it once had. As a popular genre rock is nothing now.

This is also why rock as a whole has become significantly harder and moved more towards metalcore than it used to be. The music Octane plays now is much harder than they played 10 years ago. About a quarter of the songs are straight metal. This is likely a result of the fact that bands no longer have to care about being super popular because they would never get any major airtime anyway. Thus, the bands have all decided to just play what they want now since selling out literally isn't an option.

Go listen closely to 'Torn' off the My Own Prison album. It can stand on its own, so much pain and anger.

If I were to pick a favorite Creed song, it would be "Faceless Man". I'm not sure if that was actually on one of their albums or elsewhere.

However, he couldn't get to me in time before I purchased that smashmouth cd. I never heard the end of it.

Every market still has a rock station (or two) on FM radio. Octane is hardly the only outlet for rock bands. If I had to guess, there are still way more people listening to regular radio than XM.

My rock station plays volbeat, avenged sevenfold, breaking benjamin, disturbed, three days grace, 5FDP, black keys, halestorm, pretty reckless.. I could go on and on really.

It also seems I am seeing a resurgence of rock festivals in recent years, there was that houston open air, which was part of quite a few others around the country, there is rocklahoma, rock on the range, fort rock, etc. They are more sprinkled all over locally.. not so much as traveling festivals like ozzfest or uproar in the past.

The buzz doesn't play that stuff? I went to several buzzfests in over 10 year period or so, and it was all those kind of bands. chevelle, papa roach, breaking benjamin.. man those 3 bands were at least at like 4 or 5 of them.

'Recently played' on 106.7 KBPI:

Joyride (Omen) - Chevelle
Come As You Are - Nirvana
Love Bites (So Do I) - Halestorm
Knockin' On Heaven's Door - Guns N' Roses
Thunder Kiss '65 - White Zombie
Square Hammer - Ghost B.C.
Brain Stew - Green Day
The Devil's Bleeding Crown - Volbeat
Pride - Seether
Would? - Alice in Chains

I haven't been in Houston in 5 years, but that seemed like 94.5 to me.

Edit: I see buzzfest this year has godsmack, breaking ben, red sun rising, highly suspect.. new and old rock

Also, san antonio has a rivercity rock fest, iots of solid current hard rock.

redline248

As far as I can tell, Austin area has no rock stations playing those kinds of bands. KLBJ sticks to 80s stuff and crap like Fleetwood Mac, and 101.5 plays all the hipster pop, or whatever you want to call it.
