This thread is reminding me how bad my music taste was in junior high
Kind of weird that Travis wrote every song on days of the new, but then the gtr/bass/drummer leave, and then write album for tantric that sounds very similar.. you'd think it was the same writers in both instances, but it wasn't.AggieOO said:i liked Days of the New better, but Tantric was pretty much the same, even the new lead singer sounded almost the same.Duck Patrol said:Oh wow...I haven't heard that band name in a while. Anyone remember the band Tantric? I came across a list of rock songs that hit #1 on the billboard charts in the 2000s, and they had a song on the list.

As I consider all the bands mentioned on this thread, what comes to mind is:
Drop D tuning
Lyrics that are dark, "deep", and basically no fun whatsoever
Black clothes and new tattoos
Subdued anger and frustration, probably with the reality that their brand of music was on such a decline
Guitar solos - still dead
Harmonies - none
That basically describes Tool to a T, and look how well they've done.Philo B 93 said:

I loved that song, I remember liking it when I saw the movie "Driven" (yeah, I watched that movie)Duck Patrol said:Oh wow...I haven't heard that band name in a while. What was the name of it? Breakdown or something?CJS4715 said:

Does System of a Down fit into this genre? What about Flyleaf? I used to jam the **** out of both of those bands in Jr. High / High School.
yeh silverchair is pretty much the only band that comes to most people's mind when asked about a debut rock album recorded by teenagers.Adam Ag 98 said:
I still think it is pretty cool that DOTN's debut album was recorded when those guys were 17.
The 2nd album that had Travis as pretty much the only person playing all of the instruments is solid as well. I agree that Tantric is incredibly similar, but is more polished. I prefer DOTN because of this aspect. When focused, Travis writes some really cool, dark acoustic guitar riffs. He also has a really sweet jazzy lead playing style.
It's too bad he's a crazy drug addict.
None of them are anywhere as near as good as Creed was.CorpsAg11 said:
This thread is hilarious. Count me as another who liked all these bands, but now realizes how terrible they all are...

For 80s rock it was regular tuning, lyrics that are shallow and that of what a 15 year could come up with, bright clothes and spandex, cockiness and arrogance, probably from the reality of them thinking their music would never decline, etc. etc..

90s - Angry and sullen
2000s - Napster

Go listen closely to 'Torn' off the My Own Prison album. It can stand on its own, so much pain and anger.

I had an older brother that kept me from liking Creed when growing up.
However, he couldn't get to me in time before I purchased that smashmouth cd. I never heard the end of it.
Every market still has a rock station (or two) on FM radio. Octane is hardly the only outlet for rock bands. If I had to guess, there are still way more people listening to regular radio than XM.Shut it down said:
Creed's downfall was pure Scott Stapp, but the reality is that they would have died regardless. Rock music is absolutely dead as a mainstream genre. It gets zero play anywhere outside of Octane. Creed just happened to be one of the last truly popular bands of the genre.
That doesn't mean that what is out now is bad at all. On the contrary rock is better than ever, but it will never regain the popularity it once had. As a popular genre rock is nothing now.
This is also why rock as a whole has become significantly harder and moved more towards metalcore than it used to be. The music Octane plays now is much harder than they played 10 years ago. About a quarter of the songs are straight metal. This is likely a result of the fact that bands no longer have to care about being super popular because they would never get any major airtime anyway. Thus, the bands have all decided to just play what they want now since selling out literally isn't an option.
