Jaime riding through the fire?

Those are Dothraki.

My guess (from watching season 7 trailer, last 3 episodes, and ep4 look ahead) is that the Dothraki are charging the Lannister Army as Drogon swoops down, and a few of those charging in the lead accidentally get engulfed in flame; but most of the fire hits the Lannisters - acceptable collateral damage

Who scooped up Reek? I was hoping it was Victarion.

There is no Victarian in the show -Euron is a blend.

I just want to go on the record and say I think that is a good thing that Victarion doesn't exist in the show. He spent two books sailing the ocean trying to get to daenerys. It was an awful read.
Of all the new characters GRRM threw in during AFFC and ADWD I feel like he was the most interesting one. IMO
Really? I'm curious as to why.

It's been a while since I read the books and I remember him being a snoozer. I also remember being really grossed out that he allowed the consistent rape of a teenage boy maester. F'ed up.

About the only interesting thing about Victarion is that he became the Iron Fist of GoT (got a sweet looking arm from a red priest that gives him some extra strength). Otherwise, Euron is the much more layered and sinister Brother imo. Given the choice, I'm glad the show included Euron over Victarion.

he's more interesting because of all the greyjoys are vastly more interesting in the books

the show greyjoys are awful

I think the Dorne storyline was by far the worst. It's always interesting to me how there can be soooo much character development of characters in the books: Areo Hotah, Aryanne, Quentyn, and in the show they aren't even relevant and are just relegated to a quick death, or don't exist at all.

Yea...it's hard to defend GRRM on that one. Hundreds of pages of text and it appears that plot line was a dead end. He's such a fantastic writer...but man the guy just couldn't keep a tight narrative. So many pointless story threads. How about the assassin in oldtown? (most likely Jaquen) Just pointless.

or even as far as characters that will end up actually mattering

wtf are they doing with Bran

i wouldn't say that

the narratives could theoretically converge naturally without loose ends and with a level of tension

but the shows not going to try (and Martin may not either for that matter)

I stopped giving GRRM the benefit of that doubt after ADWD when he continues to bring in new PoV and thread lines in book 5 of what is supposed to be a concluded story at 7. The guy has no idea how he's going to connect all the threads. Some may have a natural conclusion but there's 0 doubt in my mind that some will be hastly glossed or disregarded altogether.

I will say I'm intrigued to know who the "fake Targaryen" or potentially real targaryen that Tyrion spent a ton of time with in the books is. And his protector was Rheagar's right hand man who was gay? anyone remember that? Weird curve ball there.

Or Tryion joining a comedy troop with another dwarf. God he was on a tangent.

He spent two pages describing a street Arya was walking on.

omg I forgot about all that. Yea, (f)Aegon was definitely intriguing but like WTF?!

Didn't he fire his editors after the third book? Those editors reined him in with the story.

I think that sometimes may be why he's so slow in writing the books, maybe he doesn't know how to close up all these loose ends he's created?

I struggle to see how Aryanne sitting in a tower locked up in Dorne has any relevance to anyone in the big scheme of things.

As a non book reader, it's amazing to hear about all these other characters that haven't even been mentioned in the show. The show seems to have 12837410298 characters as it is and consistently brings them back even when they've been gone for 1+ seasons, yet there's 2-3x more it seems like.

Safe to say, I don't think I'll be spending the time on the books after the show is over

No clue, man. It's a narrative mess. How about Lady Stoneheart? lol Like, just WHY was it necessary to bring her back?

Totally agree...

So characters that are in the books that are not really in the show or have zero relevance:

Lady Stoneheart
Areo Hotah
Aryanne
Quentyn
Fake Targaryen
Victarion
Sansa's best friend Jayne Poole who actually was Ramsey's torture tool instead of Sansa while Sansa stayed in the Vale and made snow castles
Direwolves

first three books are legit great

rehash of what you've already seen to be sure, but they were fun reads

i liked 4 and 5 too, but agree that the world has grown too large for him to bring it altogether, what with all the prophesies and side plots (darkstar?) and locations (asshai?) that you know he wants to address

it's like dark tower. i don't regret reading the books, but the first four were amazing and the last three were not so much.

i'll buy winds of winter first day still.

I think Robin lost relevance once he gave control of the Vale to Littlefinger. Wasn't Sansa still with Robin when they were in the Vale though?

That also reminds me, wasn't that prophecy that Sansa had predicting that she would ultimately kill Littlefinger?

Couple of comments: 1st on Euron's fast-travel, you are still assuming that we are being shown things in a linear timeframe. We're not.

Case in point the whole Sam/Jorah surgery thing was shown across 2 episodes, which covered (supposedly) a few days in the Citadel. In those same 2 episodes, Jon somehow made his way from Winterfell, to a shore, to Dragonstone, a trip that in the established world should have taken a week at a minimum, and more like 2 or 3. (Remember back in Episode 1, it took Robert and crew a MONTH to get from KL to Winterfell, and that was more or less straight shot). Also, Bran somehow traversed the 630 mile trip from the Wall to Winterfell in those same 2 episodes.

So, not linear time. Euron may have met with Cercei a month before we see Yara's fleet leave. Giving him plenty of time to skirt around dragonstone and simply wait to ambush her fleet in route.

Also, Quentyn Martell is the biggest waste of a story line in the books to date. Sooo much time and energy on some rando dude who ends up being absolutely worthless to the plot of the book other than to establish he's not blood of the dragon. Just ridiculous.

It's really a frustrating story. A Dance with Dragons essentially gets taken over by side characters and sub plots. After reading it, its clear that Martin is having trouble seeing the forest for the trees. He's laid out a myriad of supernatural elements and intriguing story beats but the story as a whole has almost 0 plot progression on a macro or even micro level. Both Daenarys and Stannis want to claim the throne (yes, Stannis is still alive and still at the Wall in BOOK FIVE), but neither of them make any physical or strategic progress towards acquiring it. Its location, King's Landing, is almost omitted from the entire plot.

Agree about the time. Not that hard to get over if you just accept that some of the different storylines' scenes are not being threaded together an exact, linear manner, and accept that there are a number of gaps where significant time passes.

No bail. Remanded to custody until the trial.

Robyn Arryn is probably torturing small animals.

It's almost like GRRM wrote an exceptional open world sandbox video game with a bunch of side quests unrelated to the main story arc. I just wish I had been given the option of ignoring the blinking icon in Dorne on the map.

Reading posts questioning the timeline and timing of events or people's travels is like watching the Sand Snakes in battle in the show. Please stop. Please.

It's also funny how one post is "no character development for cool characters in the show" and the next is "too much pointless character time for characters who seemingly don't matter in the books". Always need something to complain about I suppose...

Question to the book readers: do you really think GRRM will finish the last 2 books? If so, do you think he can really bring it all together without totally ignoring some of the plots/characters/story lines he created up to this point?

He will definitely die before he finishes. I am questioning if he even wants to finish it given the snails pace of it all.
