I don't think the point of the thread was to list shows that most people with a college education would agree are overrated. This is about critically acclaimed shows.
My list:
Firefly
Homeland (1st season was great)
Sons of Anarchy
House of Cards (1st season was great, as well)
Lost
Mad Men
And yeah, the Walking Dead is terrible...and yet I made it 5 seasons through that show
Wow. Different strokes, different folks and all that, but just wow.
My opinions regarding the show are not exactly unshared. Mad Men is a boring show. I forced myself through 2 seasons in the hope that there was something more to it, but I just never felt compelled to keep watching.
It may be a great show and a classic, but it took a very short amount of time for me to actively dislike every single character and so I felt no point in continuing.
There are very few people in life, no matter how awful they are, who can't provide you some sort of relief in their awfulness. Example - In The Office Michael was awful much of the time but he was also humorously unaware of how awful he was and he had an endearing quality in that he genuinely cared about his office mates for the most part and enjoyed leading them.
