I don't think the point of the thread was to list shows that most people with a college education would agree are overrated. This is about critically acclaimed shows.

My list:

Firefly
Homeland (1st season was great)
Sons of Anarchy
House of Cards (1st season was great, as well)
Lost
Mad Men

And yeah, the Walking Dead is terrible...and yet I made it 5 seasons through that show

Mad Men? Seriously?
Wow. Different strokes, different folks and all that, but just wow.

My opinions regarding the show are not exactly unshared. Mad Men is a boring show. I forced myself through 2 seasons in the hope that there was something more to it, but I just never felt compelled to keep watching.
Made it through 2 episodes of Mad Men before I realized that every single character was a person I could not give a sh*t about so I stopped.

It may be a great show and a classic, but it took a very short amount of time for me to actively dislike every single character and so I felt no point in continuing.
Too many of the tv series today refuse to have people with any redeeming characters in the entire show...and so they don't grab you.

There are very few people in life, no matter how awful they are, who can't provide you some sort of relief in their awfulness. Example - In The Office Michael was awful much of the time but he was also humorously unaware of how awful he was and he had an endearing quality in that he genuinely cared about his office mates for the most part and enjoyed leading them.

This clip is 2 minutes long and there's not a single joke in it.
Somebody took out the laugh track to prove that there wasn't anything funny...which is kind of funny in and of itself...

I guess you need some help here:

The one guy didn't know where the Rocky Mountains were, so the other guy said they were in Philadelphia, cuz that's where Rocky took place.

The one guy said "somebody's been taking *****y pills". Ok so this one works on two levels. First, he said somebody, but we can all infer that he was really talking about the girl. It seems like he isn't sure who exactly has been taking *****y pills, but we the audience know he's talking about the girl. This is called ironic humor. Second, the notion that there would be PILLS tha one would take, like on purpose, that do nothing but make on *****y, this preposterous. This is called absurd humor.

The one guy shows the girl how to rub her feet. How do you not get this joke? He's a MAN. It goes against the typical male purview to know what she's doing, much less that she's doing it WRONG. Can you imagine? This would be enough for a lesser show, but he then goes on to show her how to do it, and he's RIGHT. This is a slap in the face to traditional gender norms, and is lampooning the very notion of masculinity.

The problem with the BBT haters is that they have such an underdeveloped sense of humor that they feel threatened by the multilevel nature of the humor, and since they can't begin to process what they're seeing, they dismiss is out of hand.

I suggest you go back to your Arrested Developments and 30 Rocks were the jokes are tied up in nice little bows and hand delivered.
None of that is funny.. like, at all. The fact that you have to explain the jokes hidden somewhere in there even proves how bad it is.

OK, so the rocky mountain line could pass for a Joey joke on Friends, but he is continually characterized as not smart.. these guys are physicists or something right? So why are they both suddenly dumb for this joke? That joke doesn't really work with a highly educated person.

Wow.

Bravo. This might be the best thing ever written about BBT.

OK so yeh I really thought Prof. frick was some BBT fanboy and cracking himself up as he's writing out explanations to these jokes.

I mean, the damn show is on, so somebody thinks that crap is funny, right?

I've only caught the beginning of that show now and again, cause it comes on after something I used to watch.. and not once did ever laugh.. i mean the beginning is supposed to hook and reel you in, and that show is just plain stupid.

I watch BBT for light entertainment. It's something I can watch while doing other things. I just find it weird how people seriously get pissed off that other people watch it.

Oh I've watched BBT too a couple of times to see what all the fuss is about. Like you said it's just light silliness. I think Jim Parsons is a decent comedic actor. It is fun to make fun of though, since it is so beloved despite not really even trying all that hard to be funny.

I will say though, I have turned on "Two Broke Girls" a couple of times and holy ****, THAT is as bad as it gets. There's just a ton of really crass 'jokes' for the sake of 'hey look it's girls being crass' but my god is it lazy and sad how unfunny it is. I can totally get into some light mindless dumb stuff, but if you like that show you're the worst.

Two Broke Girls is 21 1/2 minutes of God awful acting, but most episodes I've watched have one joke that actually lands. It might be that the rest of the show lulls you into a stuper and anything above a very low bar will make you think it's funny.

Comedy on TV has been pretty bad recently. The only comedy I watch now is Silicon Valley and that's mostly because I like the subject matter and it has its moments. It certainly hasn't lived up to its first season quality for the last season+.

Speaking of which, Veep certainly belongs on this list. It's ok, but some people act like it's one of the funniest shows of all time and I just don't see it.

So true. Dude guy's boyfriend is the only character that isn't a total piece of **** (at least as far as I've watched, only through first half of second season), and it's not like you actually like him.

I'm going to add a few new ones to the list that nobody has mentioned yet:

The X-Files: I used to watch it. It wasn't terrible at first, but it went down hill pretty quickly...and it wasn't that great to begin with. I'm not a huge sci-fi guy, so maybe that's the problem.

Arrested Development: I enjoyed it, but it wasn't as spectacular as everyone made it out to be. It was unique for its day, and I think that's the main reason it's so highly regarded.

Parks & Recreation: I remember when it first came on. I gave it several episodes to get better, but it just didn't work for me. I guess the big problem is that I think Amy Poehler is one of the most annoying people on Earth, and building a show around her was a bad idea. There were things I liked about the show, but they were outweighed by the bad.

30 Rock: My thoughts on this show are similar to my thoughts on Parks & Recreation. There was a lot of good stuff on this show, but there was so much that just didn't click with me.

Boy Meets World: People on TexAgs love that show, but it sucked. I was already 16 or 17 when it first aired, so I guess I was just too old for it.

24: Interesting premise, and season 1 was great. But the quality went downhill fast. My appreciation for the 1st season probably had more to do with the premise than the quality, and that low quality caught up to me.

Glee: This show was simply dumb. Perhaps I'm just not the right demographic to appreciate it.

I Love Lucy: I know I'll get blasted for this one. I respect the fact that it inspired countless comedians, comediennes, writers, entertainers, etc over the decades...but the show had some major flaws. The main one was that Lucille Ball was too annoying. It's off-putting and wears my patience thin. I just can't take the whining.

Veep is easily one the top comedies of all time. If you don't like Veep, you don't like stand up comedy because that is what the show is.

The first season of Parks and Rec is terrible. Try watching it from the second season on, it gets better by leaps and bounds. It's kind of like Seinfeld in that regard.

it would be interesting to see this done with Seinfeld or another funny comedy that has a laugh track. Just too see if it becomes unfunny.

So you found a video with a ton of short lines of dialogue that spanned multiple episodes from multiple seasons, none of which are a single scene of an episode.

You're struggling to prove a point....

Freaks and Geeks was the first TV show to accurately capture the true feeling of being high school student. Everything about it from the classroom settings, the counselor's office, and especially the social interactions were absolutely spot on. That show was brilliant.

I've never heard anyone call it overrated before.
