You all realize that a lot of these comedies you are listing are funny the first couple of seasons. But once they get big the writers mail it in or sell out. See Big Bang theory and modern family

Part of the attractiveness of the show is that all of the characters at one point or another are extremely unlikable.

So per this thread the answer is pick any popular show and someone will claim it is overrated.

In my mind overrated related to the critical acclaim a show has gotten so I looked up the shows with the most emmy wins all time. They are

Saturday Night Live
Frasier
Mary Tyler Moore
Cheers
West Wing

So which is the most overrated here? This group will probably pick Frasier or Cheers since they will claim " it isn't funny"

I would go with Saturday Night live as the reason it gets emmys is because it was viewed as edgy or breaking through in new ways.

The Cinemax late-night lineup. You served your purpose in the late 90s, but in the Internet age you need to show 'tration or GTFO.

I used to really like Modern Family but I also gave it up early this season. I realized I just was not enjoying watching it at all anymore. Every character on there has become a parody of themselves.

Looks like good company. I'm ok with it.

Modern Family is a good one. It was good for the first 2 or 3 season, then it went on a steady decline. I finally gave up this season.

Yep....I actually was a big fan of it for 2-3 seasons and watched still in seasons 4 and 5 but little was memorable. But it became so convoluted and they went to great lengths to shoehorn in a terrible punchline. Some of the "misunderstandings" were just beyond stupid. And how many shows did they have to end up with all of the family in the same place for some manipulated reason and they all act shocked.

It's no longer groundbreaking and no longer innovative (except that one entire show that was Claire live facetiming from the airport). It is simply comedy comfort food now.

It actually isn't totally their fault. Often times this happens to shows, they run out of gas but they limp along and still do good in the ratings because their now devoted fans refuse to give up and ride it out to the end. And as the kids grow up they become less cute and you need them to be good actors (which some are, but a few are not). So I mostly gave up this season - my DVR still records it but I often skip episodes or fast forward through most when i see where they are going inevitably. The only storyline I care about at all is Haley and Andy currently.

Specifically I really don't care about any workplace stuff for Claire, or coaching stuff for Cam. And Phil's dynamic has changed because it was all about the kids at first and his over the top cheesy dad humor and attempts to relate to his kids. As they've grown and left the nest he is floundering. The introduction of the new little kid was an obvious manipulation and necessary because Lily is so terrible. While they limit her to deadpan one liners they are now over-using the little kid. Manny's cute romantic and distinguished ways as a kid aren't working as a high school teen they are just creepy now. Alex is ok on her college storyline but she's even more removed now. Luke isn't cute any more and thats really all he had - playing off his over the top dad.

Best parts - Gloria (Sophia) is fearless and willing to do anything she is much more than an accent and boobs now. Haley as I mentioned and thats surprising that she has become a character worthy or holding her own storyline and not just a kid sidekick any more. Jay is a constant and does his bit well.

Most of it just happened, but some of it is writing and the stale factor. Its on the downward slide now and should not be winning awards much less even be nominated. I'll continue watching at least occasionally, but it has gone from family must see TV in our house to only I watch occasionally now (my wife and kids bailed on it a year or so ago).

How I met your mother is definitely up there, but The Walking Dead has to be the most overrated shiw in history. I made it through the first season mainly hoping that it would pick up and actually get better... and then they spend all of season two on that ****ing farm!

Everything about that show has been **** since day 1...the acting, the directing, and especially the writing.

I think as I went through this list that one thing stuck out in my mind...people's perceptions are based upon when they started watching the show or what even specific episodes they may have watched. I would put House of Cards season one as one of the best single seasons but have gone away from it lately and I am a huge Kevin Spacey fan. How I Met Your Mother is another example...loved seasons 1-say 3.5 but after that it got to the point only an episode or two really stood out to me and the final two seasons were miserable to watch

One show I think I liked from beginning to end was Justified and it ended before it was going to lose its luster.

I recently went back and watched all of Frasier on Netflix. It is incredibly well done. The writing, the directing, the comedic timing, it's like master class in pure situational comedy. Do you like those rare moments in Modern Family (like that Vegas hotel room episode) where everything is chaotic and the jokes are flying left and right, and characters are quickly coming and going on screen and it all culminates in like 4-5 punchlines all paying off at the same time?
That is classic French farce, and it was done brilliantly in front of a studio audience week after week on Frasier in part by writers Steve Levitan and Christopher Lloyd, who went on to create Modern Family. If you like the quick wit in those first couple of seasons of MF, you should revisit Frasier.

I love Firefly, hence adding people who don't to Arya's list.... Understand that Frasier had a huge following...it just wasn't for me.

It's funny to me how worked up people get over Big Bang Theory. It's really easy to avoid watching it if it upsets you so much. I know it's terrible, but I indulge anyway... It's my McDonalds.

So for those of you keeping score at home, I don't like Firefly, but I do watch BBT.

Frasier was awesome, but had a pretty big shark jumping moment when Niles and Daphne hooked up. That ongoing gag of him pining for her and dealing with Maris were a lot of the highlights of the earlier seasons.

Not a single joke?! Are you kidding?

I guess you need some help here:

The one guy didn't know where the Rocky Mountains were, so the other guy said they were in Philadelphia, cuz that's where Rocky took place.

The one guy said "somebody's been taking *****y pills". Ok so this one works on two levels. First, he said somebody, but we can all infer that he was really talking about the girl. It seems like he isn't sure who exactly has been taking *****y pills, but we the audience know he's talking about the girl. This is called ironic humor. Second, the notion that there would be PILLS tha one would take, like on purpose, that do nothing but make on *****y, this preposterous. This is called absurd humor.

The one guy shows the girl how to rub her feet. How do you not get this joke? He's a MAN. It goes against the typical male purview to know what she's doing, much less that she's doing it WRONG. Can you imagine? This would be enough for a lesser show, but he then goes on to show her how to do it, and he's RIGHT. This is a slap in the face to traditional gender norms, and is lampooning the very notion of masculinity.

The problem with the BBT haters is that they have such an underdeveloped sense of humor that they feel threatened by the multilevel nature of the humor, and since they can't begin to process what they're seeing, they dismiss is out of hand.

I suggest you go back to your Arrested Developments and 30 Rocks were the jokes are tied up in nice little bows and hand delivered.
None of that is funny.. like, at all. The fact that you have to explain the jokes hidden somewhere in there even proves how bad it is.

OK, so the rocky mountain line could pass for a Joey joke on Friends, but he is continually characterized as not smart.. these guys are physicists or something right? So why are they both suddenly dumb for this joke? That joke doesn't really work with a highly educated person.

How I Met Your Mother -- I'll never understand why this got the love it did. I watched a couple of episodes and it was the biggest bag of "meh" ever.

Big Bang Theory -- I HATE this show. I want to beat the **** out of everyone on it (except for the hot chick). It's HORRIBLE. I feel like it makes dumb people feel good about themselves when they get a joke.

Two and a Half Men -- Absolute garbage. Lowest common denominator type stuff. Charlie Sheen is pure trash. That smartass little kid needed his ass beat and grew up into a basset hound look-alike who needs his ass beat. And Jon Cryer. Jon Cryer for God's sake. Sweet Jesus.

The perfect answer! 100 PTS AWARDED!!!
