Jason Isbell is good but I am liking John Moreland's albums better. John Fullbright's first album was great as well, more hint of blues. Take a look at their songs.

Have to agree that both of the artists you mentioned are fantastic as well. John Moreland has a way of crafting painful emotion into beautifully written songs.

Holy Crap! I was at that show!

Were you the frat boy that kept buying me drinks because you didn't believe I was in my 30's?

Looks like he is playing with John Prine. If you don't know his music check him out.

I would definitely go to that show.

Totally agree. Go.

The scary thing is that is extremely possible It was me and I don't at all recall it. We're you there by yourself or with your husband?

I was with my husband and a friend, technically. They just wanted to drink and listen to the music. I wanted up close where I could touch Cooley's hand. And I did. And then he gave me a pick which I thought was weird because I didn't know he used one.

So, if you were like a foot taller than 5'3" me and cute, you could have been the one that kept buying me Maker's Mark

Theres literally no way I can say this without sounding like a total ****, but if you knew me when I was 24-25, it would make sense.

If your husband was with you and I saw him, I wasn't wasting the time, money, or energy buying you drinks.

If you were by yourself and made no mention of being there with a significant other...... It was likely me.

Again, Its not something I'd be proud of admitting, but since you brought it up, its very likely it was me.

Well, I was asking about Jason Isbell based on questions I had been asking.
So yeah, this thread is partially about me.

I haven't heard of him, but I'm also not a big country music fan. That being said, if I heard a song he sang that was quasi popular at a given point in time I may recognize it.

Sadly unless you listen to a very few radio stations he has no quasi popular songs. Like the truckers hes huge with his fan base, but gets next to no radio play.

Speed Trap Town is my favorite of his. It is written the way that a really great short story might be, each verse a little vignette that doesn't spell everything out but says exactly what's needed to paint a very specific and real picture.

'Those 5A *******s run a shallow cross'

One of my favorite Isbell lines.

Fullbright is playing in Bryan Saturday. Not many opportunities around there to see talent like that when I was in school.

except why would his speed trap town be playing a 5A team on a thursday night? speed trap towns are 1A or 2A, no?

Yep, makes no sense. I take it back, **** that guy.

Although, to be fair, the song is being sung from the point of view of a guy that is blackout drunk in the stands. May be a classic case of unreliable narrator. In that case, I'm back on board: our generation's Dylan.

Super 8 has some of of my favorite lines it

Do a couple rails and chase your own tail and talk about the bad ole days
Tremor in a tee shirt telling me her heart hurt honey, let me count the ways

Stockholm is also up there

'Ships in the harbor and birds on the bluff

Don't move an inch when their anchor goes up
And the difference with me is I'm falling in love
Stockholm let me go home

That's the thing with Isbell...You could on and on and on picking out great songs with phenomenal lyrics. There isn't a bad one as far as I'm concerned.

In regards to the Speed Trap Town lyrics, I think that by him referring to them as "those 5A (fatherless)" he is saying that they are not the same level as his team and he is referring to them as the bigger school.

As far as great Isbell lyrics, I love these from "Relatively Easy"

Not for me to understand
Remember him when he was still a proud man
A vandals smile a baseball in his right hand
Nothing but the blue sky in his eye

His lyrcs just haunt. This one always gets me:

And the couple in the corner of the bar
Have traveled light and clearly traveled far
She's got nothing left to learn about his heart
They're sitting there a thousand miles apart

And in Tour of Duty - overall a fairly upbeat song about getting home and getting back to normal - I always wince a little when he sings:

I promise not to bore you with my stories
I promise not to scare you with my tears.
I never would exaggerate the glory.
I'll seem so satisfied here.

As a wife, that hurts. You WANT your husband to share those things with you, and to not seem satisfied but to actually BE satisfied. He captures that reality - that there so much you can't share - so well, in so few words.

Finally, it's practically a cliche as popular as the song is, but this line is so beautiful:

So cover me up, and know you're enough to use me for good

A lot of my favorite songs form the Truckers are Isbell songs. He really helped to balance that band out, but it's obvious that he needed to leave in order to follow his own path.

It's cool to see that he is starting to get some of recognition that he deserves. The ticket in dallas even had him on for an interview last year. Apparently him and David Letterman are pretty good friends and he hangs out at Dave's house from time to time.

He deserved an Oscar nom for A Star is Born.

He still does not get the absolute respect and admiration he deserves.

He is probably the best song writer in America.

Totally agree with you. His song that Bradley Cooper sang was so much better than Shallow. Nothing against Lady Gaga but she's had much better songs than that.
