I thought Cloverfield was great.

Maybe it's already been mentioned and I missed it, but let's be clear.
JJ Abrams isn't directing this; he's just a producer. Still really interested in this, but without Abrams as director, it lowers my anticipation quite a bit.

Yeah, I think a lot of people are missing that... JJ Abrams as director typically means a "must see" for me... As a producer? Eh... He produced Joy Ride.
Director has two short 10 min films to his name and that's about it.

All Matt Reeves had done before Cloverfield was TV. He then went on to eventually direct one of the best blockbusters of the past five years in Dawn of the Planet of the Apes.

Yes I'm well aware that first-time movie directors can have success... That's kind of how we get two-time movie directors![]()
I'm saying there's a marked difference between an Abrams "directed" movie and an Abrams "produced" movie. Thus far I'd put pretty much anything Abrams has directed on a pretty high plateau. Produced? He's got a few stinkers in there... And even Cloverfield -- which I thought was above average -- I don't consider on the same level as Super 8, Star Wars, etc...

How in the world were they able to keep a Cloverfield sequel (or somewhat related) under wraps?? Seriously, that's pretty amazing.

So this most likely will not actually take place in Louisiana. The hat one guy is wearing references a New York locale.
quote:+1 for indulging in another go-round due to this thread. It's been one of my favorite "popcorn flicks" for several years/10+ viewings.
Also rewatching Cloverfield right now and forgot how much I enjoyed watching this movie.
quote:Yup, figured as much.
- Bad Robot bought the script and then did, in fact, hire Chazelle to rewrite it / tie it to Cloverfield in some way, ultimately shooting the movie under the codename "Valencia."
quote:Honestly not the worst idea in the world. This movie was going to have a small niche in the thriller genre (though John Goodman could have put a few more butts in seats). Now this movie is going to get quite a bit more in money for a few rewrites.
Ok... so I read just a tiny bit, and also did some digging...
- I can confirm that this did NOT originate as a "blood relative" of Cloverfield. This definitely was its own thing - a contained thriller spec called "The Cellar."

- The first few pages I read are damn good. Super tight, and tense as hell from the get-go. I can already tell the way they try to keep you guessing about Goodman's character (Howard) is going to be so damn fun. At times, it feels like we're going to be absolutely convinced he's telling the truth, and then at times absolutely convinced he's lying, and back and forth like that the whole through.
I'm not going to read another page, but man, this has serious potential. Cannot wait for March!
quote:I think you need a little more than the first 3rd. There is quite a bit of time passing in the trailer as evidenced by the female character eventually being chained up and being in a cast when she wasn't at the beginning. These type of movies are typically in the 90 min time frame so not a lot of time.
I would have thought early on in the movie. First third or so. Enough time on the trailer to build aim of the characters and then expose them to whatever is going on outside.
With having some Cloverfield tie-in can't imagine it's a 'nothing outside crazy overbearing patent' storyline

Has anyone seen/found any viral tie-ins to the movie yet? Maybe the fact that the movie is also an address could lead to something?
