Time travel has a recurring theme in the series and the franchise. TOS, TNG, Voyager, DS9, and Enterprise all had episodes and plots that involved time travel. Hell, Enterprise had the Temporal Cold War. First Contact, Generations, The Voyage Home, and the 2009 film all involved time travel.

An outside possibility is that it may not be time travel. It could be the mirror universe.

Captain Janeway: Time travel. Since my first day on the job as a Starfleet captain I swore I'd never let myself get caught in one of these godforsaken paradoxes - the future is the past, the past is the future, it all gives me a headache.
^with Sarah Silverman as Rain Robinson and Ed Begley Jr.

Damn it, I'm going to have to support gay Sulu. I might get excommunicated.

So would it be the mirror universe of the prime timeline, or is there an JJ-verse mirror universe?

Good question. I'd assume that it would be the JJ-verse mirror universe, but depending on how they do it there would probably be little difference between the Terran Empire of the mirror universe of the prime timeline and the JJ-verse timeline. Most of the changes in the mirror universe occurred prior to TOS anyways, and Enterprise affirmed that further.

The press release also confirmed that Chris Pine and Chris Hemsworth are on-board for the fourth film, and that the remaining cast is expected to return. As we have previously reported, Pine and Quinto have clauses in their contracts for a fourth film, but the studio and production companies would have to negotiate new deals with Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, and John Cho. Abrams last week stated at a press event for Star Trek Beyond that recently-deceased Anton Yelchin's character of Chekov would not be recast.

That's a great call, IMO.

Perhaps in the mirror JJ-Verse, somebody from Earth travels back in time to destroy Vulcan because Spock inadvertently brings down the Terran Empire.

This comment from Scott Mantz at Access Hollywood made me excited:

Beyond goes from being a fun action movie to a great Star Trek movie, and one that's the closest of the reboots to capturing the spirit of the original series.

I'll be honest, I had damn near dismissed this one. The trailers did nothing for me until this latest one. Really pleasantly surprised with the critical reception.

Justin Lin, like The Rock, seems to be franchise viagra.

It's not. To me it just highlights two things: (1) there's too many people expressing their opinions and thinking those opinions carry weight thanks to the internet and (2) nerdy fan types think they are in a position to dictate was is acceptable or not in regards to subjects with long histories (SW, ST, comics, etc.).

This website is for information technology, but somehow this guy thinks he's a movie critic.

Anyone reviewing a movie with a big pop culture resume should have to put forward a resume, or at least first post their expectations.

I sincerely hope its good, but I honestly get the impression its going to be Fast and Furious in space, which to many people may be a good thing and the reason why so many people are so excited. But to me, that's not good. Oh well, I guess I'm in the minority.

I think that was the initial concern of many. Personally, I agreed after the first trailer, but the later trailers really made me look forward to this movie. It doesn't hurt that many reviews are saying that this is the closest of the JJverse movies to the original series and movies. Guess we'll find out this weekend!
