Many reviews talk about the themes of "togetherness" and this being the exact film we need at this time.

So no Christopher Lloyd in blackface?

This latest entry in the venerable "Star Trek" franchise breaks little new ground. For a series supposedly about the future, "Star Trek" remains firmly rooted in the franchise's long and very prosperous past. Rated 2 stars out of 4.

Under the direction of Justin Lin, (taking the reins from J.J. Abrams who directed the previous two "Treks") action scenes are so chaotically edited it's often difficult to figure out who's bashing and crashing into whom.

And as the alien villain of the piece, Idris Elba is so weighted down with head-covering prosthetics that it's often difficult to make out what he's saying.

At times the picture feels like a nostalgia tour.

I'm sorry, but ST movies are probably never going to not feel episodic especially since its roots are in TV. I think I've read the same things over and over again since the Next Gen movies came out. Today these movies are made by people with backgrounds in big budget movies. And yet, they can't get away from the stuck in the past/too much like an episode criticism.

And basically this guy is saying it's an average movie because it's too much like Star Trek (stuck in the past). Um, okay?

Considering that I thought that Into Darkness was pretty ****ty, I'm okay with a nostalgia tour if it isn't a blatant retread.

How many of the Star Trek movies are better than average anyway?

For their time:

II ST: Wrath of Khan (my favorite)
III ST: Search for Spock (I liked this one)
VI ST: Undiscovered Country
ST: First Contact
Star Trek Reboot
(I like Into Darkness, but I understand that's not a popular opinion around here)

I really liked it and can't wait for the spoiler thread. There's one thing about it that annoyed me but overall very good.

And I actually thought the best thing about this one is that it felt like this crew is finally standing on its own without the movie being a drawn out reference to an old movie.

This feels like a Star Trek episode/movie without having to be self referential. It's like "here's the crew we have now, you know them, now let's get to some Star Trekking."

yeah i liked it too.

very much agree that it feels like it's own thing now - not dependent on any previous incarnations although there is still at least a few references to the old.

It had a really frenetic pace and I know I missed a lot of details - gonna have to watch it multiple times to get it al - the good news is I want to see it multiple times.

In the new incarnation it's at least as good as the first, better than the second.

they did a great job of giving every major character both something to do and some personal story arc as well. it was a great balance of the characters.

there is no doubt that is featured prominently - and only felt slightly preachy a time or two - but mostly it worked.

Yep, I thought it was solid. The dialogue was fantastic. I even felt the Sulu is gay part felt natural. Bones' and Spock's interactions were priceless.

We went last night and really enjoyed it. The characters and dialogue were a HUGE upgrade over the second installment, and on par with (or even better than) the first one. The story wasn't as good as the first, but I do feel like Justin Lin helped get this one back on track.

Took the kids to see it over the weekend and we all had a fun time.

It was so refreshing to see a summer movie franchise put out a film that was just......a fun popcorn flick and not some grandiose spectacle.

Everything right now doesn't have to be HUGE!!!!!! It was like "here's a Star Trek film that isn't part of some multi-movie story arc and is kind of a stand-alone flick.....enjoy!"

It wasn't "STAR TREK 3". It was more like a feature length television episode. And that was very nice.

Saw it Saturday after finding out that Hell or High Water wasn't playing in Houston.

I knew almost nothing about it going in and overall thought it stunk, a relatively plotless mess lagging behind the first two by a lot.
