I'm not understanding why it matters so much to Pegg whether he is ****ing gay or straight. Honestly, leave that PC **** out of my space movies. I just want "people" doing cool **** and physics and ****!!!! Give me ****ing phasers, warp speeds and transporters and I'm good. Unless being gay directly affects the story like Sulu ****s a Klingon captain to keep the whole crew from annihilation or they go to a whole planet where the whole species is gay and only Sulu can communicate on their level then it has absolutely no reason to be mentioned in the ****ing story line. Hey Pegg, just keep Sulu bad*** and no one will care what he is.

It's Friday afternoon so I'll bite here...

The Kelvin was attached by the Narada on stardate 2233 and Sulu wasn't born until 2237. So Kelvin Timeline Sulu could be slightly genetically different than original timeline Sulu.

Pegg actually said as much today.

quote:
Our Trek is an alternate timeline with alternate details. Whatever magic ingredient determines our sexuality was different for Sulu in our timeline. I like this idea because it suggests that in a hypothetical multiverse, across an infinite matrix of alternate realities, we are all LGBT somewhere.

Trying to figure out how Spock and Nero traveling back in time made him gay; maybe Sulu saw a memorial to Kirks dad at some point and was blown away by the Hemsworth good looks

Maybe the original Sulu's parents boned in the living room, but on the day they did it in the new timeline the TV was showing an "unsolved mysteries" episode about the disappearance of the Kelvin which turned them off so instead they ended up boning later that night in bed. A different sperm won out, thus new Sulu is slightly genetically different from original Sulu.

Holy S, how did I not realize that was Chris Hemsworth until now?

Guess I haven't really watched the beginning of the film since he made the big time.

No offense to George Takei, but the fact that the characters are similar-but-different from the original timeline is the entire point of the second timeline.

Edit: I'm not trying to say the original Sulu wasn't gay and this one is, but just that events could have led to it being more obvious with this Sulu.

I don't remember Sulu shacking up with anyone, so how do we even know the original one wasn't gay?
For Takei, being gay isn't a choice.

In his opinion, this means his character was closeted in his timeline which he isn't comfortable with. It also sounds like he truly respects Roddenberry and this tramples on his vision.

Check out the beginning sequence of Star Trek Generations involving the Enterprise-B where James Kirk apparently dies. At some point there is an introduction of an Asian character, a gal on the bridge, who is identified as being the daughter of Hiraku Sulu. To which Kirk and Montgomery Scott wonder when Sulu found the time for a family.

I'm going to guess the original timeline Sulu was not gay.

It was a nice gesture, but they should've respected Takei's wishes on this.

It was a silly, pointless gesture...

Please excuse my ignorance, I have never really been into Star Trek and the only movies or shows I have seen about them are the two most recent. Not trying to derail the conversation about the gay character or whatever but I do have one question:
In "Into Darkness" didn't Kirk die due to radiation exposure or am I remembering it wrong? And if he did does that mean the new one is set before it?

No; Khans blood was injected into him (it revived the tribbles (sp?) remember) and he recovered

First critic reactions are in...

... and they're pretty damn good. A few of these are from guys I've read and trusted for years, too. Can't wait to actually watch a good blockbuster this summer.

The best thing in those reviews is a consensus that it is getting back to the original series. That's been my biggest criticism, if you want to make a popcorn sci fi action flick great, just don't call it star trek.

I hope these aren't the same people that reviewed Snowpiercer... which got an unbelievable 95% on RT... and is probably my most hated WTF movie made since 2010.

Speaking of Scotty, he had no family except a sister and nephew. He had no love interests. He had no children. I wonder why Pegg didn't decide to make Scotty gay?
Eh, Scotty had a couple in TOS but nothing really came of them IIRC. And then in Star Trek V, Uhara showed some interest but that was when Sybok was influencing her and he turned her down because of that. AFAIK, the only crew member in canon from the TOS crew to have a family after the Enterprise was Sulu, his daughter Demora who served on the Enterprise B in Generations.

I mean I guess technically McCoy had a daughter (Joanna McCoy) as well, pretty sure that was in The Animated Series, but was never actually seen on screen IIRC.

Wow. I don't know how much more time travel I want in this franchise, but this could be pretty cool if done right...

Or, maybe Hemsworth will be featured in a series of flashbacks?

Either way, what are the chances Abrams comes back to the direct the fourth movie? Lin has said he's one and done - and it does sound like has other projects lined up - but Abrams has yet to announce his TFA follow up. I seriously doubt he'll do a fourth "Star"-themed blockbuster, but who knows. This is a shot in the dark, but if not, my money is on Dan Trachtenberg taking over the reigns, who just did 10 Cloverfield Lane. Abrams really seems to have a taken a shine to him, and Trachtenberg definitely proved his mettle with that one, so we'll see. Sounds like we'll know something for sure next week at Comic-Con.

Hemsworth could also play Kirk's brother George Samuel Kirk

Time travel has a recurring theme in the series and the franchise. TOS, TNG, Voyager, DS9, and Enterprise all had episodes and plots that involved time travel. Hell, Enterprise had the Temporal Cold War. First Contact, Generations, The Voyage Home, and the 2009 film all involved time travel.

An outside possibility is that it may not be time travel. It could be the mirror universe.

At first I thought this was kind of dumb and gimmicky, but starting at the :50 second mark, all I wanted to do was be in this theater. Such an immersive effect. The three screens are still distracting, though. If they can somehow figure out how to execute the same general effect, but with one, continuously curved screen, this could be amazing...

Voyage Home was the 4th movie in that series, another parallel, like Kahn in the 2nd and the Enterprise being destroyed in the 3rd.

Captain Janeway: Time travel. Since my first day on the job as a Starfleet captain I swore I'd never let myself get caught in one of these godforsaken paradoxes - the future is the past, the past is the future, it all gives me a headache.

I think one of the more fun episodes of DS9 was "Trial and Tribble-eations" with the two guys from Temporal Investigations. Their reaction about Kirk was pretty good IMO.
