Did they just rush this to get it out with The Force Awakens? No idea what this thing's about based on that.

Generally it's a good idea not to know the plot o the movie from the trailer.
Noone has any real idea what the plot of The Force Awakens is from the trailers and that is awesome.

Just judging from that trailer this is what it looks like happens:

The Enterprise is out exploring and somehow gets attacked (and most likely destroyed). The crew gets in the escape pods and is jettisoned down to the planet below. Individually, they then search for eachother, but one by one the crew gets taken to a slave-like colony. Then I'm sure they have to discover why they're there and who's keeping them there. And since there were zero clues about who the antagonist is in that trailer, I'm assuming it's someone we all might know.

I'm still excited to see it and I'm not saying it's going to be a bad movie, but that was just a pretty terrible trailer.

Looks good. Not a knock it out of the park trailer like the Force Awakens was, but 10 times better than that piece of filth that is the BvS trailer number 2.

Looks very much like Star Trek meets Fast & Furious, which makes sense, since its the F & F director.

Trailer did nothing for me, that's for sure.

And as a kid my least favorite Star Trek movies were the ones that had very little to do with space and a lot to do with being on a planet with boring aliens (or even worse, humans and whales!!!). So far I've really enjoyed the rebooted Trek and the cast is really good so I have hopes this movie has plenty of redeemable qualities.

I dearly love the 2009 star trek, and i really enjoy Quinto / Pine / Dredd in their roles here, but yikes. It didn't look Bats/Supes bad, but it definitely registered lot lower for me than ID4 Part 2 or Apocalypse

I don't think the plot of the film should detailed in the trailer. I think JJ has done a masterful job hiding in the trailers for the TFA. However, there should be a setup and a clue as to what is going on. For TFA we know that The First Order and Resistance will face off at some point. There's a storied history that backs that up through the light combating the dark. Hell, the trailer for TFA sparked all sorts of conversation based on the initial trailer with "There's been an awakening, have you felt it?"

Whereas in this trailer, all we know is that the Enterprise is getting pummeled by some new aliens and there will be action and no apparent connection. Beyond "this is where the frontier pushes back" there isn't really any hint as to what is going on. I'm not saying that the film doesn't interest me based on the trailer, but it does seem like a bunch of action thrown together. I've watched the trailer a few times now, and I get the impression they want to try and emulate aspects of Guardians of the Galaxy with the crew going on adventure of some sort.

It's very hard to care about a third movie in the rebooted Star Trek verse when we're getting a new Star Wars this week.

Maybe I'll rewatch the trailer in January and find it more interesting then. Doubt it, though. That franchise seems to be moving further and further away from what made the 2009 reboot great.

Based on that trailer it's another space action movie but not really the Star Trek scifi that I enjoy about the franchise. I'll see it, but not really excited after that trailer. I do like the reboot cast but films execution and stories have been meh.

Actually you don't know any of that star wars stuff from the trailer. You only know it because you went online and looked it up.

As far as star trek goes, it looked like there was a shot with not only the downed enterprise, but a graveyard of ships type area. So maybe some force is downing spaceships in the area, then doing something to the crew?

Funny you should say that... that was Paramounts one mandate this go around: make Star Trek more like GOTG. TV will be the place for the more tame/traditional/nerdy Trek, but they want to go super big/fun with the movies.

Is that a bad thing?

Judging solely by the footage in that trailer, I think they made a good decision to hire Justin Lin from the Fast & the Furious movies (and the Modern Warfare episode of Community).

Have no doubt, this looks like a fun movie.

But it does not look like a Star Trek movie.

That is the issue.

Star Trek can be both fun and Star Trek-y (see STIV).
This looks like GOTG/FaF.

Me, I have been done with ST for a long time. Have only seen the first rebooted movie and quit watching the TV show halfway through Voyager.

It was just too much. I am getting there with the Marvel movies as well, but at least they keep mixing those up - genres, tone, type of movie.

In what Star Wars film has the darkside and the light, good and evil not fought? I mean really. Stormtroopers are going to be fought by what appears to the the rebels. When is this in question?

The Star Wars trailer didn't detail anything about the orders or factions you mentioned

Really, you're going to quibble over the entities not being named when there is clearly two sides in the trailer? Again, in what Star Wars film have the two sides not faced off?

I really hope the Beastie Boys don't make another appearance. That would be really lame. I hope that was just for the trailer.

Can't wait for this I love both the Trek and Star Wars franchises and will watch anything they put out. I love that they keep putting more action into these and it's not just science and exploring like the old trek those were kind of boring until the Klingons

Another step away from star trek and closer to "spaceship action movie" with cute one liners.

Although the trailer has grown in me, I think it's a product of a rushed deadline to get it done to premier with SW.
