It might be a factor of time from whoever made this...it was a looong time ago and a lot of painful deaths since. Some are just fresher. Like Hodor of course.

I think honestly a lot of people had that spoilered anyway so it might have been less impact. Season 1 had about 1/4 the audience it does now. I think most who watch it heard about before - Ned's death was the first viral moment for the show and attracted a lot of people to it ("they killed the lead???? i gotta watch that").

Worst GOT deaths - not in terms of being gory in terms of gut wrenching and mostly characters i liked (no direwolves included)

11. The Hound - if indeed he did die, he had some good qualities and he was funny
10. Renly - bad way to go, doesn't seem fair to be killed by something you can't defend yourself from
9. Hodor - HODOR
8. Ygritte - well it was inevitable but....come on Olly you little ****
7. Barristan Selmy - damn, he fought long and hard
6. Khal Drogo - tough SOB, that was not a good way to go for a warrior
5. Catelyn - oooof, thats a bummer, at least she took out a Frey
4. Shireen - seriously f'ed up, thanks dad
3. Robb - well remember that thing about betrayal, still terrible and watching Talisa die too with child. ugh
2. Oberyn - he was so cool, but he taunted and you never taunt

Ned was the biggest shock ever. I hadn't read the books yet, and I distinctly remember sitting on my couch rolling my eyes thinking "Sean Bean is the damn star of the show. I'm sure he'll weasel out of this." Then SNICKER SNACK dude is headless. Jaw on the floor.

what actually kinda funny about that is....Sean Bean is notorious for being killed in EVERYTHING he is in (just about)......

I mean I get that it was shocking if you didn't read the books, hear a spoiler or know about him getting killed all the time but seriously he dies a lot....

and usually very violently.

he's been shot of course many many times, hung, stabbed by knives, swords and bayonets, throat slit, had his limbs ripped off, trampled, fallen, blown up.....about all he had left was being beheaded. kinda fitting.

From reading the books, the most gut wrenching, wtf deaths were:

1. Jon - betrayed by his own men, damn
2. Oberyn - rug completely yanked out from under us
3. Ned - there was this constant, "ok, he's going to the wall, he's going to the wall....uh, wut?"
4. Robb - Hey everyone, lets have a wedding! oh snap
5. Jaime's sword hand
6. Renly - this one was the most wtf, b/c I couldn't figure out what just happened

The most satisfying deaths:

1. Joffrey - serves you right you little shht
2. Janos Slynt - you're the f-ing reason this whole thing went sideways
3. Viserys - whiny, temper tantrum throwing POS, molesting your sister
4. Catelyn - Finally, this b-tch is gone (aw gd it, she's back)
5. the master in Astapor - Dracarys, mother f-cker
6. Tywin - f you, old man

most looked forward to (ignoring the show)

1. Littlefinger - He needs be made a eunuch, hanged, have his hit cut off and body thrown out the moon door, and let Nymeria snack on his bloody pancaked self
2. Walder Frey
3. Daario Naharis - I hope one of the dragons eats this arrogant pr-ck
4. Ramsay and Roose Bolton
5. Cersei
6. Theon - he'll probably make it through the series, and people probably like him now...but I still hate him.

I binge watched the first two seasons the week before season 3 started (my roommate told me to so I could be live and watch it with him). So when Ned died, I was surprised, but I wasn't THAT surprised. His character didn't have any growing to do that could last for a whole three seasons. I suppose knowing the show was longer than one season maybe made it less surprising to me, but I never really viewed him as THE main character as much as he was just an important character to setting up the story. By then, they had already killed Robert Baratheon, Viserys Targaryen, and many other important to semi-important people. But it was pretty clear that Ned had already reached his potential and wasn't going to be much of a factor going forward. (Also, the cheesy line he said to Jon Snow about "next time I see you, remind me to tell you about your mother" basically proved to me he'd never see Jon again.)

Now, when Robb died, THAT caught me way off guard, because I for SURE thought he had way more to grow and advance the plot.
