Two? Whats the other one besides James Dean? Did he get one for 127 hours?

Now lets argue about whats more prestigious, a primtime emmy for supporting actor or a golden globe for actor in a tv movie!

Paul was pretty terrible in Need for Speed, but then again anyone probably would have been terrible in that role
I do that Franco has the chops to pull of a character like Jesse if he wanted/needed to

It took a while but the internet finally gave us the Aaron Paul/James Franco debate we have been waiting for

You saw that movie?! lol I didn't think anyone saw that movie. Hope you didn't pay for it.

I'm not trying to say that Aaron Paul is some overrated bad actor and that James Franco is all world, because neither is the case. The truth is, from pure acting ability, there's probably not much that separates the two. Success in Hollywood is all about being in the right role at the right moment. But the reason I put Franco ahead of Paul right now is because I think early in his career, Franco could have played that same role with similar success. I'm not sure Paul could play some of the roles that Franco has. Maybe he can, but he has to show if first before I'm convinced. Once upon a time Nick Cage was considered this great actor because of his one role in Leaving Las Vegas. Years later, that performance doesn't seem as great.

I think it's personal preference. I do think Franco is great in roles he can make fun of himself. I actually loved Your Highness and the Interview...as terribly sophomoric as they were.

The thing I love about Franco is that he seems to make movies to have fun. Especially with Seth Rogen, it just seems like they are just two best friends having the most fun in the world, and making tons of money while they do.

Who is Nick Cannon?

Franco is great in most things he does.

Paul was great in BB.

I just need to see more of Paul.

Not a big Paul fan. The reason I like Franco more is because he can be dramatic and funny, I havent really seen Paul be funny.

He had numerous hilarious moments in BB but I'd also add that being funny is not entirely relevant to acting acumen. I feel like a decent script can make anyone funny.

I just can't think of a single moment in Franco's acting career that made me go, "whoa...that guy can act." AP, while limited in his exposure/opportunities, had multiple moments that did that in BB. You know how you can watch a movie or tv episode where the performer just owns the screen in such a dominating fashion you can't help but say, "Damn, that guy just locked up the Oscar/Emmy" ?

Franco is entertaining and clearly creative, but what moment/movie has made him stand out?

Franco was pretty phenomenal in Howl as Alan Ginsberg.

I'm just kidding; I never saw it.

But it seems like a movie people would say he was excellent in.

As someone that teaches theatre and directs plays, I think humor is harder to do by a big margain.

So much of comedy relies on timing and facial expressions. You either have the timing or you don't. Drama can be done by the tear jerking words and serious music.

Comedy is about the timing and the reactions.

My most successful show ever was A Midsummer Night's Dream set in the 60's. I had kids that could do that timing and do the physical comedy.

Anyone in acting will tell you humor is the hardest form of acting.

In your theatrical expertise, do you honestly think James Franco is a better actor than Aaron Paul? Because I've seen Franco try serious, and he's ok at it. And I've seen Aaron Paul do funny, and he's quite good at it.

To be honest, I haven't seen enough of either one.

I saw BB, and Freaks and Geeks, and Big Love. I don't know if I have ever seen either one in a movie.
So it isn't a question that I can really answer.

I just know that producing successful comedy is much harder than anyone thinks.

I would agree that making a comedy is tough. Humor is subjective so it's hard to pander to a large audience. But IMO, the actors you see IN comedies are generally not taken seriously as actors; and that's for a reason.

You named 2 universally dynamic actors. My statement was a broader generalization of the industry; not a steadfast commandment. And if you're saying Franco is on either Hanks or Williams level, this convo is done.

What is your experience in theatre and acting?

You are having a hissy fit because I said comedy, in my experience, is harder than drama.
So back your experience.
M.C. Swag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Not hissy at all. Message board doesn't tranlate tone well.

And my experience is none. Just a fan of film. And we're discussing degrees of difficulty. Just because I say QB is the hardest position in sports doesn't mean that being a safety is easy. But I'm assuming you're going to say my opinion prolly doesn't count now. So I'll leave it at that.

What about Jonah Hill?

I suggest you watch "Whatever It Takes", though a comedy, I think Franco does an excellent job with his role.
M.C. Swag
How long do you want to ignore this user?
Jonah Hill is terrific. He has range. Franco does not; at least to the degree I think AP does. And I already know Franco can do comedy. He's a natural at it. This thread has been derailed enough. Agree to disagree.

Everyone knows comedy is harder than drama. If you can be funny you can be dramatic. Doesnt always work that way.
