Saw this over the weekend. Enjoyable movie. I had not read the book, so going in with blank slate was fun with no expectations of any kind. I do feel that the movie did a decent job at making a bit of a point in regards to Watney's struggle to overcome and survive.

Overall I think the cast was pretty good, and did a good job. Damon's reaction to him being told that NASA hadn't told the crew yet I thought was perfectly reasonable and understandable. The daily mission I had no idea that Sean Bean was in this film, and Ejiofor was great. I think Jeff Daniels reminded me a little bit of his character from The Newsroom, which I was perfectly fine with. I think that Watney's videos were probably the highlight of the movie though.

Maybe someone who read the book can help explain this. When the door blows open and kills all of his potatoes, he is able to reseal everything. Why didn't he grow potatoes again? Did he not have enough time?

F spoiler alerts, were 10 pages in to a movie that came out weeks ago.

The issue was the Mars temp killed everything...bacteria, organic, etc. so there was nothing to grow the potatoes.

This. He could use the Martian soil and repopulate the bacteria with his waste, but there were no more viable potatoes to regrow so he would still run out too early.

I understand now the disco was in the book, but honestly that soundtrack completely took all the stakes and suspense out of the movie for me. I never really felt watney was in danger (except in rare instances) or he had any trouble finding solutions to problems, and much of that was due to the cheesy music playing over montages. In Apollo 13, despite knowing the outcome, there was a real sense of dread, danger, and sweat and tears while they worked the problems.

Ejiofor was excellent, and I also really liked the Asian engineer - his reactions every time they moved up deadlines were fantastic. The Mars-scapes were fantastic - I wish there had been more time spent on his trip to the crater. I thought Damon was very good
If you want more sense of dread, danger, sweat and tears working out the problems, more time spent on the trip to the crater... read the book. All of these things were extremely well done in the book but were somewhat sacrificed in the movie for the sake of time.

I think this was the intention. The writer has definitely seen Moon and was most likely inspired somewhat by it. But the book and the movie are definitely meant to be consumed with a smile on your face, not a sense of angst... The writer definitely wanted the focus to be on the triumph of the human spirit, and that people are inherently good and helpful. This was more about one man's ingenuity to stay alive and the whole world coming together, pooling resources and doing everything possible, to save just one guy... It's a feel good story.

I understand your reasoning though, it's just not the way the author wanted to go with it.

Seems like your criticism is more about you than the movie. I learned a long time ago that you have to realize the intent and how well they achieve this.

Read the book and you would not have had those expectations.

The protagonist wasn't a woe-is-me navel-gazer. That was the point. He faced the prospect that if he accepted his situation, he would die, alone on a planet by himself. He had within what it took to be an American astronaut: courage, and the ability to put everything that he couldn't control aside and overcome obstacles that navel-gazers would use as excuses.

He didn't wilt in the face of the totality of his solitude and the immenseness of space. He was a courageous, confident, optimistic, thinking, problem solving human being. He and the entire team back on Earth did not accept being beaten.

No wonder people expected something different. It is quite odd to see such a character depicted these days. Personally, I found it a breath of fresh air.

It's neither inhuman nor superhuman. It's intensely human. The postmodern vogue, pretty much for more than a century, is to associate "human" with flawed, insufficient, and weak.

The protagonist in this movie is not infallible. He is not without emotions. He possesses no superhero powers. What he possesses is something that is kin to the naval explorers in the Old World who set upon the vastness of the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in their day. Pride at being the first. The courage to go where others do not dare to. He possesses an uncommon yet human will to live and not be beaten, an uncommon yet human ability to focus and innovate and solve and survive. I'm sorry (I guess) he didn't cry enough or have an awful childhood or cheat on his significant other or let the job that he volunteered to do with dangers that he understood going in overwhelm him and cause him to curl up in a self-pitying fetal position. But frankly, I've seen enough postmodern exploration of the "frailty of the human condition". I was just fine with this story and this guy. And the team of people who valued one teammate enough to risk all to bring him home.

He was a lot of things. But he was NOT inhuman.

The book clearly showed Watney's sense of humor (gallows humor) was just as significant to his survival as his intellect. I thought it was evident in the movie, but maybe not for non book readers.
