This movie was amazing in almost every aspect. A true, without a doubt 5 star film in my book.
It's incredibly inspirational, gripping, humorous, scientifically accurate, and entertaining in every way. Can't say enough good things

I saw the film today, I'm glad I read the book first. I need the job of whomever wrote the screenplay, I feel like it stayed pretty damn close to the book minus a few things (nothing about pissing and ****ting in the rover for weeks on end, he doesn't roll the rover before getting to the Ares IV MAV, the rover modifications felt kind of glossed over, oh yeah and that whole storm that almost kills him on the way to the A4 MAV).
Overall I enjoyed it. Apollo 13 was better, though.

Saw it today with wife and we both loved it. I read the book and was happy with the transformation to film. Though I felt it was a bit rushed on the preparing for and drive to the mav. Lost a bit of anxiety/edge of seat at the end because of that I think.

I hated Kristen Wiig (dislike her generally and find her distracting in non-comedic roles). I also didn't like the casting of Jeff Daniels. Also generally I felt like they were trying to hard to make it a "feel good" movie with the disco music and frequent lighter moments. Personally I wanted the movie to be a little more like Apollo 13 and a little less like Guardians of the Galaxy.
Disco stuff was straight out of the book, and I'd say it was way more Apollo 13 than Guardians of the Galaxy.
The Martian was published in 2011. The disco joke was prevelant in the book...if anything I'd say the music bit was "borrowed" by GOTG.
Although I never read the GOTG comics and apologize if music was a part of the story.
The movie definitely didn't take that from any other movie though.

Went tonight. Great movie, packed house with applause at the end. Interstellar was more original, but The Martian was more entertaining. I had read the book, but still was on the edge of my seat.
For the parents out there (very minor spoiler)...
My 12 year old had read the book too, so I took her and at the last minute I took my almost-10 year old too (she is pretty mature and "common sense media" said it was ok for 11 year olds). The horror movie previews before the movie are pretty hairy, so have them stay outside or cover their eyes/ears for that part. The movie itself was perfectly fine for kids if you don't mind a couple f-bombs. Only part that was remotely disturbing to them was a scene where he had to staple his own wound shut towards the beginning, that kinda dragged on a bit too long. Otherwise, they were transfixed the whole movie and loved it.
Have not read book (yet).

Saw it last night... thought it was excellent.
One question though (sorry if already covered). Did the movie just not make a big enough deal of the storm at the very beginning? The fact that they had this storm that could tip over the MAV didn't deter them from putting a MAV in place a year or two before they sent people there? Was the storm at the beginning a 100-year storm or something?

The storm at the beginning was admittedly (by the author of the book) an exaggeration. The Martian atmosphere is very thin so even an extremely windy storm wouldn't come close to tipping over something like that.
I don't temember if i read that one here or if i had a discussion about it elsewhere. It makes sense though. That was his way of getting them off planet in an emergency.

Wasn't questioning the science... just questioning the plot device. I guess it was supposed to be implied that the storm was a super freak occurrence but I never really picked up on that. More of like a "Uh oh, it's one of those big storms, I guess we have to abort the mission."
I got that too. Otherwise they wouldn't have factored that into an abort scenario.
I too found it poorly thought out that they left another rocket standing up somewhere else on the planet years in advance of the next mission. If a storm could just knock it over...don't think they'd do that.

My biggest issue was the idea you would launch a rocket in a storm with that much shearing.

We saw it tonight and I thought it was good not great. I never read the book, so this thread is actually filling in some gaps. I understand now the disco was in the book, but honestly that soundtrack completely took all the stakes and suspense out of the movie for me. I never really felt watney was in danger (except in rare instances) or he had any trouble finding solutions to problems, and much of that was due to the cheesy music playing over montages. In Apollo 13, despite knowing the outcome, there was a real sense of dread, danger, and sweat and tears while they worked the problems.
Ejiofor was excellent, and I also really liked the Asian engineer - his reactions every time they moved up deadlines were fantastic. The Mars-scapes were fantastic - I wish there had been more time spent on his trip to the crater. I thought Damon was very good

Enough force to tip it would seem sufficient enough to cause problems during takeoff. It's really my only gripe of the book/movie.
Well my first answer I am ACTUALLY qualified to answer. I ran liftoff and ascent loads for shuttle and am running them now for SLS.
after the tipping problem the biggest issue for liftoff would be getting blown into something right at the beginning. i.e. for shuttle and SLS you don't want to get blown into the tower structures or have you engine bell hit something coming out of the hole. ( Higher winds mean more likely for that to happen) I couldn't tell how much of an issue this actually would be.
For ascent the big question would be how high does the storm actually go up in the atmosphere, it bet it isn't that far at all. ( the same issue can be said for the whole taking the nose off) This would get you Q ( 1/2 rho V^2)
Next for wind "shearing" we are more concerned with the abrupt thermal layer changes that cause real shearing. When you pass 27,500 feet the wind was blowing from this direction and is now blowing from a different one.
But also most ascent loads are generated because of AoA into the wind. if you know which way the wind is blowing you can angle yourself to lower the bending moments. But that vehicle was so short and stubby that isn't a big issue either.
So Q alpha ( 1/2 rho V^2 * AoA) is what we care about and since the the density of air is so low ( like someone said above) the true problem areas are not that long of a time. If you get me a charge number and some atmospheric parameter of Mars I can figure this out.
And remember we design to 3 sigma. to me that storm was greater than 3 sigma but it is a risk

Finally saw the Martian. Wow! Really loved it. The Rich Purnell trajectory stuff is what I studied in grad school, so I totally geeked out at seeing that stuff on the big screen.
and LOL at the CGI they did on NASA Johnson. I dearly wish NASA had that much funding and interest from the public as they did in the movie.

Heck, last time I was there (~5 years ago), we used MS NetMeeting to video chat with someone on ISS, lol.
We put people on Mars and yes, people will be excited.
There's a good chance the water fountain I used today was there during Apollo. Torn between disgusted and thrilled at the thought of sharing a water fountain with an engineer who worked Apollo 13.
Yeah....might want to get checked for lead poisoning, lol.
