Finished the book yesterday and absolutely loved it. I loved that he was just a normal guy trying to figure stuff out, made the story much more engaging. Although I think I would like Robert Downy Jr. for the movie better.

That probably would have been a little too on the nose during the climax

Doesn't look like a great place to watch a movie. Uncomfortable as hell.

Great book. Couldn't put it down. Read the whole thing in one night.

At a conference at St. Pete Beach (it's actually my wife's conference) and most the way through the book. Truly awesome book. Will be curious as to how they convert all that internal dialogue problem solving to a movie.

Excited to see it this weekend.

Still can't get over how great this fall will be for movies. Seems like I'll be heading to the theater damn near every weekend until New Year's.

The Martian, Sicario, Steve Jobs, The Walk, Spectre, Mockingjay Pt 2, Star Wars, Hateful Eight, and The Revenant.

I'm not gonna knock the zero grav recliner until I get a chance to try one out!

Saw the movie tonight... I thought it was great. Really glad we've had some space/sci-fi movies being quality flicks lately and not just the cheesy crap we've been dealt for years. Readers of space opera and sci-fi know there is a lot more quality material out there to pick from. Kind of sad though I didn't get to read this book before I saw the movie.

Movie was great. I thought it was cast brilliantly. Everyone played their parts well. Damon really brings Watney to life. There were a few things from the book they left out, although only one of them had a decent effect on the story.

Overall amazing movie that I will most definitely see again. Everest and The Martian have gotten this movie season off to a great start

Saw it tonight. I'd say it was one of the closest movie adaptations I've seen in a while.

Thought it was good, but not great. I'm a little torn by it. I don't think they just mailed it in like most studios do with movie based books, but I felt like it was missing something. Gravitas comes to mind. Like when he's able to first communicate with earth, I would think it would be a highly emotional event. Didn't get that feeling from the movie.

I did love the celebration when he got connection and he's all by himself jumping around.

Loved it, and thought the script was well-done. You do miss a lot of the internal dialogue from the book (as well as 90% of the f-bombs and jokes about 70's sitcoms), but the use of the video log solves most of that. The casting was great. I especially liked Rich Purnell. Sean Bean doesn't have a whole lot of material to work with as Mitch, but he was appropriately curmudgeonly. (And he doesn't die, unusual for a Sean Bean character. So there's that.) Enough of the math and science is left in without making the movie inaccessible or boring for non-book readers or non-NASA geeks. Matt Damon's performance is very good. I think he nailed Watney. Watching him change physically and mentally during the course of the movie is tough.

SPOILERS

The only major book plot line removed completely from the script is the massive storm on the journey to Schiaparelli Crater. And that's OK IMO. The movie is long and intense enough without it. Obviously they had to speed things along by skipping past some Sols. The pacing is quick; the script often skips ahead of the book in 50 Sol chunks. But I didn't find that to be a problem.

More Spoilers....

They also left off the drill killing pathfinder.

Oh, speaking of Pathfinder, I loved how the suspense of "where's he going?" was completely preserved. One of the high points in the movie, IMO. (Although I did have to explain what Pathfinder/Sojourner were to my wife.)

I thought leaving out the loss of contact by killing pathfinder was the only thing that should have been there. They also left out the Rover flipping when he entered the Schiaparelli Crater. I think those 2 additions make it perfect. The storm along the way to the Crater wasn't needed.

I liked the movie. Obviously the book was better due to time restraints but I do wish they would have had more oh crap moments.

Only thing that was different and I don't know why they changed it was who caught Watney I don't know if that has to change it but it worked I guess for redemption.

Never read the book. Absolutely loved the movie. More satisfying than Gravity, IMO

Saw it at Premiere Cinema in CS. Overall better than Cinemark, but those might very well be the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in. Another fun fact: college students officially look like junior high kids now (i.e. I'm getting old).
