I'm guessing that was actually Martinez's family, they just showed them during Damon's voiceover for more impact. He's probably just talking about his mom and dad when he says, "tell my family."
ya i think you are right. No where in the movie does it show him having a wedding band but when the hand swipes over the woman and kids on the face that hand has a ring on its finger. Plus on the chronicles that they put out he just says hi to his mom and dad and not to any wife or kid. It threw me off i guess when i saw that

I really don't know why you guys are so out of shape about the trailer. What exactly are they giving away? The rescue mission? I don't think that's exactly a huge surprise.
Truthfully, this is not a very complex story. You can't just say it's a movie about a guy on Mars. You have to give some kind of background. The general premise is that he's stranded. Of course he's going to be rescued.

It is pretry cleAR from the trailer that he doesn't have enough food.....downer/tension built....but he is able to grow some plants.....upper/tension relase...oh snap his shot got blower up....downer/tension back up ..

They could've easily conveyed there was a chance to save him without giving away the whole story.
I have no knowledge of the book or anything about the movie... But I watched the trailer and my first impression was wow, will be seeing this one!
I just finished rereading the book and my only thought is: I'm really scared they are gonna leave a lot out of the movie or that they'll mix the timeline up. I remember reading the book on my brother's kindle when it first came out and it has been one of my favorites since it came out. I just want the movie to do it justice. I think they did a good job of casting the film, and now hopefully they can really bring it to life.
Finished the book last night and absolutely loved it. Can't wait for the movie. The humor was spot on and the problem solving was intriguing and realistic.

I think the hesitation over Damon was from before the previews came out - now that we've seen him in action, he seems like a perfect fit. It just didn't seem like the perfect choice when it was first announced. He looks and sounds just right from what I've seen of the previews.

Not sure I can picture Pratt as a botanist, engineer or a scientist in general
Pratt can pull off being smart.

Early reviews are in and apparently Ridley Scott nailed it. The movie is on equal footing with the book.
I just started the book again on my way to work this morning.
Will not see it BECAUSE of Damon. Ugh.

I just got out of a special screening near JSC for NASA employees. I've read the book, and will try to keep this short review spoiler free.
Great adaptation of the book. Tense and thrilling, with a sense of humor. Damon absolutely nailed Whatley. What an amazing cast, I wish we could have spent more time with some of these characters. Kept up the tension throughout and added some real heart at moments. I felt the very end lost a little momentum, but still wrapped up well. The physics and operations also got a little hokey towards the end that also got some laughs in my audience. Highly recommend for anyone.
I saw it in 3D, and it added to the beginning part immersion, but I don't think it hurt or helped the rest of the movie. I didn't think it was bad 3D like I've seen on other movies. Some f bombs and naked male bottom if you are thinking of taking kids, but nothing else questionable.

Random thoughts:
- Buzz Aldrin called the Moon "magnificent desolation," They nailed this in some of the Martian establishing shots. A few took my breath away for the magnificent desolation.
- Lots of laugh moments.
- Probably the biggest laugh came from exterior shots of JSC, I doubt the rest of the country will get that laugh.
- I saw the "Bring Him Home" movie poster outside, and couldn't get the Les Mis song out of my head.
- I don't think everyone will know who John Aaron is or what a steely-eyed missile man is, but if you want to know, read this.
- Mackenzie Davis was basically an entire Flight Control team rolled into one person, which I was OK with for simplicity. But she basically does some of my job in the movie.
Awesome to hear. Sounds like it was a fun screening. Super cool that A) you work at NASA, and B) you saw it in that kind of environment. Thanks for sharing!
My first thought after the move will probably be: "Damn I wish NASA had that much funding"
