I like to pretend that threads like this don't exist.

The prequels are Star Wars movies whether you like them or not. The 6 movies tell the story of Anakin Skywalker. I love watching all of them.

No. It's the story George Lucas wanted to tell, whether people like to accept it or not.

I enjoy them all.

I don't think it was the story Lucas wanted to tell. For the reason that the "story" is so lacking. The first two movies have about zero narrative drive. The last one has too much packed in.

I think he felt like he needed a trilogy but really just did not have the ideas available to flesh a trilogy out. So you got two movies where just about nothing happens. And a third where stuff happens but told very poorly.

Other than the terrible performance of Hayden, the insipidness of the love story between Anakin and Padme, and the ridiculous "midichlorian" explanation for the Force, I enjoy Episodes 1-3 just fine. I saw the original Star Wars in the theater when it opened long before Lucas started messing around with it. What he did to the original Star Wars later on is a much more unforgivable sin that anything he did in the prequels. Solo shot first, dammit. That's who he is, period, full-stop.

Other than the fact I banged your mom last night, you think I am a pretty good guy.
Short Round

The prequels:

-tried to cater to too many demographics
-went over board with special effects to the point the characters felt apart from their environment
-had minor characters behaving corny (droid army, jar jar, pod race announcer, etc.)
-made the Empire takeover more complicated than it needed to be
-needed more dead younglings
-didn't need to explain the force(midichlorians), but went ahead anyway on that crazy path
-went light saber ape s***

Overall I hope it's a long term lesson for future film makers of what not to do for a sequel or prequel to a classic movie.

The prequels:

-tried to cater to too many demographics - true
-went over board with special effects to the point the characters felt apart from their environment - it was horrible horrible horrible
-had minor characters behaving corny (droid army, jar jar, pod race announcer, etc.) - don't forget just having way to many ****ing characters
-made the Empire takeover more complicated than it needed to be - it didn't need to be told. Just have it in place. Wasted time with it all.
-needed more dead younglings - I would have been ok with this..
-didn't need to explain the force(midichlorians), but went ahead anyway on that crazy path - for this reason alone they should have been removed from canonical status
-went light saber ape s*** - this was horrible, boring and just silly

Overall I hope it's a long term lesson for future film makers of what not to do for a sequel or prequel to a classic movie.

That would be difficult. My mother passed away 2 years ago. What a bizarre thing to say, even as a joke.

Yes "I banged your mom jokes" are so bizarre.

But your reaction kind of illustrates my point....except for those 4 things that ruined the movie, your liked the movie.

I think the original three movies are kind of overrated, so it makes sense that the prequels wouldn't be that great.

The first movie was good and fresh for the time. If you aren't old enough to remember it, there has never been a movie that had the same cultural impact. Harry potter came close but iy had the advantage of the success of the books.

The second one was just a really really really great movie in its own right

The 3rd one kinda sucked. Especially the 3rd act

nope. disagree Duncan. George Lucas designed it correctly. ROTJ rocked. except the stormtrooper armor wasn't mojo. it was too perfect.

the huge problem was that the very characters he meant to give life to were so poorly acted/directed. there was no depth to any of them.

that's like saying Dark Side of the moon sucked. Oh wait.

I'm exaggerating a bit. But I really don't get the insane level of devotion people have to it. It's kind of a mess when you factor in all the revisions and changes that have been done to it over the years.

Oh yes, this is the real issue for us kids of the Seventies. The prequels are bad but ignorable; I just don't watch them. Some people like them and I'm okay with that; a lot of people like Tyler Perry movies too and I don't get upset about that either. But the original three movies - especially Star Wars and Empire - expanded our imaginations and created a mythology that nothing else came close to. For Lucas to go back and tinker with them - and add absolutely nothing of value , just a bunch of pointless visual noise - sucks on a visceral level.

I love Star Wars. Was born in 73 so I was the absolute perfect age for Star Wars to be the defining entertainment cultural experience of my young life. Will always love it.

But damn, some of you are f'n dorks. You're arguing about Star Wars and getting personal about it. Star Wars. Jeebus Christ. Get a dog, get some pu**y, get out of your parents house. Really. It's Star Wars. Dorks!

This is probably heresy, but I thought episode 3 was pretty good. Granted, I only saw it the one time, but I remember wondering why so many people bashed it. Guess I need to watch it again

Do you realize how off base you are? I'm a doc with a beautiful wife, a German Shepherd, three kids, two 4wds, and a share of a small ranch. I watch maybe three hours of TV a week. But you know what else? I build stormtrooper armor. No, make that sand trooper. And it rocks. It is a great thing.

If you gave up on the star wars costumes you could have an entire ranch /urban

I wasn't a big fan of the prequals either and I was 10 when Episode 1 came out, but Darth Maul was the most badass character in the whole series IMO

Jedi was the only movie I ever saw in the theaters (born in 78) and I didn't have any problems with the Ewoks. I even watched the Ewok Adventure every time I visited my grandparents (I had the cool grandpa that had one of them brand new VHS players and he recorded it!!!!!!).

And now I have a 4 year old that has never seen the non-special edition original trilogy as well as the prequals... and he loves them all.

Yeah, but then id have to pay ode to Star Wars by renaming the ranch something like Mos Eisley. And apparently that correlates with the amount of ass I get, so...

It was a good story in terms of what the Clone Wars was and how the Emperor came to power (if not a somewhat cliche parts in the story).

The part they blew was Anakin's fall. It just wasn't a very good story or believable.
